segmentation fault

greetings, running Centos 4.1 i386 on a poweredge 1800, will be trying x86_64 tomorrow since apparently the processors are EM64. anyhow, I'm having issues with this unit producing segmentation faults on practically everything. this is not an issue just with Centos 4.x, but also RHEL 3. so I resorted to RH9, but had other issues with hardware drivers. Today, I installed OS and everything went smoothly, to a point. this server will ultimately be used for a point of sale application called counterpoint. What I did was install the app (worked great), installed an sql interface to the db (worked great). added some data to the db and posted sales. This is where I have the continual problems with linux. as soon it starts the posting, in another windows I did a ps -ef and got Segmentation fault, dmesg produces the same error. top still works, but thats about it. now, from experience, I know that if I reboot the system - I'll get many errors and segmenation faults and then when the login comes back up where the name of the server is will be () login: I'm guessing there is going to be no way around reinstalling this box, but I trying to remain hopeful that there is a better solution. thanks. cameron

I can tell you that the Pentium D CPUs work fine with CentOS 3 and kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp. Presumably the newer kernels incorporate more support for these CPUs, possibly activating additional features not supported by earlier kernels. But they work fine with the older kernels. Bug 147823, <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=147823>, seems to describe the problem -- basically, there are/were issues with hyperthreading and dual-core processors where the machine would run slowly when hyperthreading was on. With hyperthreading off, the machine acted like it had two ``real'' processors and worked fine. There's supposed to be a fix in RHEL3 U6 (and presumably there's a similar bug for RHEL4 and an update for RHEL4 U2). lsof with offset

I did something simple; on one window did more/etc/mail/sendmail.cf on another window did lsof -o -b -p XXX -w where XXX is the process number. The SIZE column does not change to OFFSET! the size reflects the size of sendmail.cf - I was hoping the "-o" would change the SIZE column to OFFSET column and show at what offset the program has read into the file? AM I doing something wrong? I am trying to find a way to tell how far a given program has read in a file. THanks so much. Jerry

OpenIPMI on a SunFire v20z

Hi all, New to the list and (mostly) new to CentOS. We have just moved from running RHEL to CentOS on our main production servers. Anyway, I am configuring a couple of new SunFire v20z servers here at the moment and trying to get the systems' management interfaces to work fully under CentOS. First issue was trying to install the openipmi RPM from the CD that came with the SunFires, this RPM installs the source for the openipmi kernel drivers and then builds them as kernel modules. First I had to get the kernel source installed (i used the kernel SRPM to install, then did an rpmbuild to create the patched source directory), however I'm now receiving a whole bunch of errors whilst trying to compile the IPMI driver 'ipmi_devintf_src.c' file because of what looks to be incompatibilities with the kernel. My presumption is that this openipmi driver is intented for 2.4.x kernels. So I moved on and discovered that openipmi is built into the 2.6.9-11.EL kernel which is installed by default. Motherboards

Does anyone have any experience with Super-Micro brand motherboards // dual Xeon cpu's? Had to swap out my Tyan piece of junk and going back with the S-M board. I believe it has similar north/southbridge chips on it -- at least they are the intel MCH ICH5R and PXH plus the 82546GB. One area that the Tyan board was seriously lacking in was in the hardware monitoring department. The S-M board uses a winbond 83627HF chip. Another area I'm wondering about is with the SATA controller. Supposedly the ICH5R supports Raid 0, 1, and JBOD's, but does CentOS handle the sata raid without difficulty? Tnx.. -- Snowman

broadcastclient does not work on CentOS 4.1

This ntp.conf file works fine under RedHat 9: authenticate no #enable auth driftfile /etc/ntp/drift keys /etc/ntp/ntp.keys server 127.127.1.0 fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10 trustedkey 1 enable bclient broadcastclient However, it doesn't work on CentOS 4.1. ntpd complains with this error message: Unable to listen for broadcasts, no broadcast interfaces available Has anyone gotten ntp broadcastclient to work under CentOS? This is very similar to the problem explained by this email thread: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2004-August/057010.html Any help is appreciated.

I have configured a MQ cluster with heartbeat and DRBD. When cluster switch and starts drbd disk on the other node, audit kill it and cant switch the service. I'm probably missing something very simple. My hard drive looks like this: [root@mavis ~]# fdisk -l Disk /dev/hdb: 163.9 GB, 163928604672 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19929 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/hdb2 14 19929 159975270 8e Linux LVM Inside the Logical Volume there are my / partition and swap partition and CentOS4 sorts it out just fine. [root@mavis ~]# mount /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw) <snip> /dev/hdb1 on /boot type ext3 (rw) However, if I boot e.g. KNOPPIX, I'm unable to mount anything except the /boot partition on hdb1. Is there any way out of this intolerable situation other than doing a full backup, repartitioning the hard drive without that damnable LVM and restoring the whole thing from the backup?

/proc process information on centos 4.1

Is there a way to tell through /proc or something else which files a process has open and more importantly what position the read pointer is in for that open file? As an example if I am reading a file with a program I have no control over, and I kill that program, I need to know when in the data file that program was reading at that time. Is this information available and if so how to read it? Thanks, Jerry

Cron script crashing server...

Hiya, have a bit of an odd problem so looking for thoughts before proceeding any more. Problem is on centos3 (also runs fine on another but fails on another, so not sure this is an issue or not), dual xeon setup. Basically I have a perl script that runs once, first thing every morning, gathering some stats (currently turned off due to problem). Crontab -l shows the following... 00 6 * * * nice /home/statsman/stats/run_stats.sh >/dev/null 2>&1 (.sh file basically sources with full path a config with some vars, then runs the perl script). There are a couple of other scripts in the crontab which run absolutely fine, so cron itself seems to be working, its just the combination. If I run this (at that time or anytime) via cron, the whole server totally dies no warning, nothing in logs instantly. If I watch in top waiting for the cron you don't even see it appear, machine just totally hangs, can't ping or anything, needs a cold boot. Nothing in logs or anything apart from bootup info after. If I run the perl script outside of cron from any folder at all, it works fine, never crashes which is where I'm confused, its only as soon as its run from cron. To test I've put it on a test machine, and to confuse it further runs absolutely fine under cron (old redhat install though) no matter what I do, it also seems to run fine on other machines (except one with identical problem) and runs fine from cron on other linux dists/machines, but can't do as much testing on them. I'm really not sure where the problem lies, so may be offtopic, I'm just confused why it runs on some and not others (although maybe running the same version, its possible they were configured slightly different on install), and pretty much clutching at straws. Worse thing is machines a production one, and want to keep downtime to a minimum, so trying to get some angle on what may be wrong before testing more. Any thoughts much appreciated. Ian

Centos 4.1 on RaQ 550?

Has anyone ever tried to install 4.0 or 4.1 on an old Sun RaQ 550 Cobalt machine? If so would you be willing to share your procedure and experience? I have spent several hours googling and have found how to do this with Fedora Core 1 using a 2.4 kernel. However I am wondering what Cobalt specific patches have to be applied to get 2.6 kernel to work. I have not found anything related to building a functional 2.6 kernel for the RaQ 550. Otherwise, I am assuming that the install procedure would be very similar for Centos 4.1 and Fedora Core 1. -- Paul (ganci(a)nurdog.com)

CentOS 4.1 iSCSI support

Hi. I found this cached in google: "The initial release of CentOS 4 does not include iSCSI software initiator or target support. Support for iSCSI is being evaluated for addition in a future update to CentOS 4." What is the status on iSCSI for CentOS 4.1? I've tried to install it using yum but cannot seem to get the appropriate package names.. And the above note suggests that they may not even be available. How do I get iSCSI support on 4.1? Can I use the 3.1 package or? Many thanks. Morten

I have the following packages installed: freenx-0.4.4-1.centos4.noarch from extras bash-completion-20050721-1.2.el4.rf.noarch from dries/dag bash-3.0-19.2.i386 from base seems to result in a non-working nxserver (the window manager doesn't start up, although X applications can be launched via logging in through a seperate ssh and setting the DISPLAY variable accordingly)... As far as I can tell: nxserver calls nxnode which sources ~/.bash_profile which sources ~/.bashrc which sources /etc/bashrc which sources /etc/profile.d/*.sh including /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh which sources /etc/bash_completion - which doesn't return (or rather somehow quits, thus causing the skipping of the execution of the X window manager). Anyway the point is that the line after sourcing ~/.bash_profile in nxnode does not get called (when the /etc/bash_completion file is present). Not sure if the problem is in nxserver or in bash_completion, but renaming the /etc/bash_completion file fixes the problem... Anyone feel like debugging more of this? (the bash_completion file is rather magicky and I don't feel inclined to dig in it...) Cheers, MaZe.

memory leak in Centos 4.1 and 4.0

Centos 4.0 and 4.1 seem to have a memory leak somewhere and I can't find out what is doing it. I think it may be dovecot. I have installed hundreds of Linux machines, centos/redhat/suse in the past as firewalls and mail relays and use the same/similar methodolgy and config for each. I have found that since Centos 4.0 and 4.1 came along machines that have run well for years and months, suddenly and systematically start running out of memory after a few weeks/months of uptime. The symtpom is the load average goes up and up as the machine creeps into swap usage and eventually the machine has to be rebooted.... this only happened with the introduction of Centos 4 and of course that means Dovecot for the IMAP server.... hmmmm...... Anyone else seen this, P.

OS does not see all my RAM

My BIOS shows all my RAM, but when I boot up linux it does not see all the RAM I have two one GIG sticks of RAM, which show up in my bios, but when typing free, I see that it only shows 256Megs. Is there a way to specify the amount of RAM if linux cannot detect this, or how can I fix/tweak the OS to recognize the amount of RAM my OS is centos-4-x86_64 on a DELL 1850 [root@smtcorav02 ~ ]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 251360 220136 31224 0 3932 64748 -/+ buffers/cache: 151456 99904 Swap: 524280 0 524280 --

Symantec ghost and CentOS 3.4/4.0

Anyone have any experience getting ghost to do a successful image with CentOS, Fedora, or RHEL? It worked great with RH9, but now a days I find it nearly impossible to get it to work properly. Any tips would be helpful. We spin up a large number of servers on a weekly basis and it would be nice to just be able to image them. Thanks, -Drew

Yum update slow on CentOS 4.1 x86_64?

Hi list I have several CentOS 4.1 boxes, but only one is running x86_64 CentOS. yum update on all boxes is really fast, on the x86_64 box it is horribly slow. Even startup and "Setting up Repos" takes minutes to complete. The box is just idling all the time (no load at all) and is connected to an 8 mbit DSL connection. Also the downloading of the headers seems to go very slow, about 1 kb per second or so? I tested the internet connection (did wget on an 700 mb ISO image) which downloaded at near max speed so I am sortof ruling out the connection. Top doesn't show any load when yum is running, nor is anything eating any cpu cycles. Ideas anyone?

question on firewire support and centosplus

Hi folks: Firewire was not supported in 4.0 due to the upstream provider not including it. Is it in 4.1? Or is it still out of the mainline upstream kernel provider? What about centosplus? Centosplus has been listed as unsupported. I presume this means that they are/were one-off builds with missing functionality (e.g. xfs, etc), and are not updated. Is this the case? I am looking at this for an important server, and I want to make sure that if we switch to the centosplus kernel that we haven't messed up the rest of the package support, or major kernel bugfixes. The reason I am curious about firewire is that I would like to use the firewire interface rather than the USB interface for our backup drives. scsi tape drive problems

I am experimenting with a scsi2 HP SureStore DAT24 attached as an external device to an Intel P4 system. I am attempting to create a raw disk image of a dds2 tape made on a non linux system. My immediate problem is that I am trying to terminate a dd process and having no luck. dd was invoked thus: dd if=/dev/nst1 of=/tmp/disk.dds2.img bs=512 & pid=$! a ps reveals this: ps PID TTY TIME CMD 1936 pts/0 00:00:00 bash 2034 pts/0 00:00:15 dd 2093 pts/0 00:00:00 ps a call to kill has no apparent effect: kill -s SIGKILL 2034 ps PID TTY TIME CMD 1936 pts/0 00:00:00 bash 2034 pts/0 00:00:18 dd 2100 pts/0 00:00:00 ps and calls to mt show this: mt -f /dev/nst1 status /dev/nst1: Device or resource busy Short of a reboot, how do I get control of the tape drive back? List, It looks like I may have to drop back to a 32-bit version of the OS due to some non-resolvable library issues for the software I'm attempting to compile, and want to ask, how far back can I go with CentOS where I'd not lose too much functionality of the 4.1 version. Essentially what I need is the equivalent of RHES 3. The other thing I'd thought about would be to install the needed gnu library, but in a non-standard place, like /home/sam or some other user directory. Since the software only needs this at runtime and not during linking, I don't see what It would bother. Given that idea, how would I use RPM to install that library ? I read the man page, but did not seen much option for installing to a non-std location, and not have the system actually "recognize" it as being there. suggestions? -- Snowman

If you want to do raid, you will still need a raid card to connect to the disks in this enclosure. You will need to check the compatibility of the raid card. The best ones are made by 3ware. But they probably won't do entirely what you need by themselves, IIUC what you want to do there. I suspect that after you get the library in it's final resting place, you'll want to add the target directory into /etc/ld.so.conf. If you don't reboot immediately and want to use it, you'll want to run ldconfig. This based on my interpretation that you want to pull this lib to an out-of-the-way place so it doesn't get trounced/removed when you pull major upgrades? HTH and that I wasn't addrssing a problem that doesn't exist.

I just installed CentOS 4.1 for the first time - I did a "minimal install"... Error running startx as non-root user

I've been looking online for resources that may help me, but I haven't found anything that worked. I'm trying to run x as a non-root user. Any suggestions? I get the messages: Fatal server error: PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server. Perhaps you do not have console ownership? I have servers that are running: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 5) and Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Pensacola) [which I think RH renamed as Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 2.1]. The servers are running fine. Is it possible (and if so, how) to convert these to the equivalent releases of CentOS, without doing a complete upgrade (I want to mess with the systems as little as possible)? I work at a small company and we simply can't afford to pay for the renewal costs to be able to keep them updated from Red Hat. -- -ste

Please recommend a DVD writer for CentOS 4.1

Hi. I need to install DVD writers in a CentOS box as part of a backup setup. I want as little fuss as possible both with HW recognition and functionality. Can any of you recommend a vendor/product ? Performance of the drive is not an issue. I get confused looking at all the "+/-RW +R double layer yada yada" when skimming the hardware lists.. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Morten
