I have just loaded up CentOS4.1 on a PE1850 with twin Intel x86_64's. When I came to clean out those packages I didn't want (because some always creep in however careful you are), apart from those with dependencies, I notice a lot of cases where there are two packages of the same name installed - one clearly an x86 package and one an x86_64 package. eg apr Is this intentional and if it is, how do I remove using rpm -e those packages with duplicate modules without removing those that will break dependencies? pam and sasl2-sample-server failure

I'm setting up a postfix server using "The Book of Postfix". In ch 15 there is a section on testing saslauthd which I can't get to work. I can get it to work using shadow password authentication, but it fails on pam. I don't kow squat about troubleshooting pam. Any PAM wizzes out there that can help? I saw a unrelated post talking about something needing to be in the pam sasl group. Had no idea what that meant. sasl ins't a user, or group. I setup and try saslauthd -m /var/run/saslauthd -a pam -d sasl2-sample-server -s rcmd -p 8000 sasl2-sample-client -s rcmd -p 8000 -m LOGIN 127.0.0.1 If I set "-a shadow" it works. So I assume I have saslauthd working at least. But, if I set "-a pam" as listed above, it fails I believe it may be a PAM issue, could be sasl, but I'm hoping maybe someone will see the easy answer. Way to tell if monitor is on or off???

I am looking for a way to tell if the monitor is on or off? xset q - seems to only work if DPMS turns off the monitor. If I or someone actually turns off the monitor xset q still shows on. If I do xset dpms force off ; sleep 5; xset q the monitor shows off. So is there a way to tell if the monitor is actually on or off? Thanks, Jerry

Installing Java on X86_64 CentOS 4.1

I have some problems installing java support to my browser (firefox). This support I installed with no problem when running the 32 bit version on the same machine, but now I can't find the plugin. I running on S754 - AMD XP3000 this is the file i download: jre-1_5_0_04-linux-amd64.bin And I am following the installation instructions from this link: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml Everything seems to install perfectly, but the libjavaplugin_oji.so is not included, I can't find. Maybe there is an other file to link up to? If someone has the answer, please! kai

List, is there an equivalent on Linux as "watch" under FreeBSD, as well as the "snp" or snoop device that permits one to watch what is going on in another terminal? YUM error - are repositories down or something?

Following advice on how to ensure that PHP and MySQL are on my machine and working correctly, I ran the following YUM command, with the subsequent error: [root@localhost ~]# yum install php php-mysql httpd mysqlclient10 mysql- server Setting up Install Process Setting up Repos http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en/i386/dag/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (113, 'No route to host')> Trying other mirror. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: dag failure: repodata/repomd.xml from dag: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Unless I am misunderstanding this error (which is quite likely), it seems to indicate that YUM can not reach the online repositories. Is that the case? Or does the problem reside on my end? Dave

It seems your network is not working, and yum can't reach it's repositories. Make shore you can ping google.com or similar ! If not, check your network configuration. Dave, What you need is php, msql & apache. You can install all the packages via using yum First execute yum install php php-mysql httpd mysqlclient10 mysql-server yum will resolve all dependences for you and probably will install some additional packages that you may need. If you have some packages already installed yum will tell you ! After installation, you will have to start several services: service httpd start service mysqld start to test that your webserver is running you can use your local browser httpd://localhost the best way to test php is to put a phpinfo.php file in your webserver document root usually in /var/www/html/. Do the following: vi /var/www/html/phpinfo.php insert in the first line: <? phpinfo(); ?> To test php do the following: httpd://localhost/phpinfo.php it will show you your php configuration. Update/upgrade paths?

Good afternoon, Netizens... I have a number of 3.3 CentOS boxes that are quite a substantial distance from my home office. Short of physically going to those sites with a fresh set of CD's in hand, is there a method of remotely (via secure SSH) updating not only the files but the distribution as well, say to 4.1? Can you do a distribution update without using CD's? After a few weeks of experimenting with CentOS 4.1 I am really motivated to upgrade, if for no other reason than the fresh kernel and x.org, to name just a few. PXE Install CentOS-4.1

I am setting up CentOS-4.1 so I can install it via PXE Boot. I have everything working except the only packages available for selection is the Minimal set. The other groups are grayed out and can't be selected. Any ideas? I have also discovered that anaconda does not follow http redirects which is a bit annoying. how do I install mailman in a mail cluster

I am trying to figure out the best way to install Mailman, or any other mailing list software in a mail cluster, i.e. two postfix smtp gatways, two squirrelmail webmail servers, failover cyrus imap servers.. I initially installed it on the same machine as the imap server since this is where the mail ends up and only is delivered through one machine. I have other just technical kludges, like propogating the mailman aliases to the smtp gateway so that it knows what is a local user. i.e. the smtp gateways check ldap to see if a local destination is actually valid before sending the mail to the cyrus mailstore via a postfix relay... How are other people solving this ?

I made sure they were selected because I develop a lot of web sites in PHP/MySQL, but I always do my testing on the server side. I thought it would be kind of cool if I could do the testing and development on my home machine. Which is a long way of saying that I think I have PHP/MySQL on my machine, but have no idea what the heck to do with them. I mean, I can script PHP and write queries for MySQL, but don't know anything about their set up and installation. I wrote a small test HTML page with basic head and body information, and simply this PHP in the body: <?php echo 'hello world': ?> And then opened it in FireFox. As expected, it didn't display anything. So I went to my trusty friend, Google, and asked about it. But it's one of those cases where people seem to assume that it's already installed, and if it's installed, it's already working. The PHP site itself says "We do not distribute UNIX/Linux binaries. Most Linux distributions come with PHP these days" and then not much else about running it. Screen is an option. Both of you log in with the same username; you as the root user 'su - username' will work. One of you execute 'screen', the other execute 'screen -x' afterward. -- Marc

Portsentry cause IPTable Reloads

I'm having some trouble with portsentry on CentOS. I've installed it and configured it to ignore my network. However, every 20 minutes, it reloads my iptables and basically kills any SSH sessions, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks, Todd

The installation has dovecot-0.99.11 + postfix-2.1.5 and >600 mbox accessed email accounts. Number 1. Some users accessing thru squirremail (installed in my webserver) can read their INBOX at /var/spool/mail directory but when trying to delete a message they receive the following error message from squirrelmail: ERROR: Could not complete request. Consulta: COPY 1279 "mail/Trash" Reason Given: Internal error occured. Error report written to server log. [2005-09-16 15:08:04] and the error logged is the following: Sep 16 15:09:27 mail imap(username): mkdir_parents(/home/username//mail/.imap/Trash) failed: Permission denied I never stated that .imap/Trash when configuring dovecot and the strangest thing is that my account, as most of others, can delete messages moving from /var/spool/mail/my_name to /home/my_name/mail/Trash Number 2. Randomly, some users connecting from Mozilla Thunderbird via IMAP get an error message telling that there has been an error connecting to INBOX. Watching the maillog I found the following: Sep 16 13:07:43 mail imap(otheruser): File isn't in mbox format: /var/spool/mail/otheruser I accessed the user's inbox file with vi and found that there was a "--604" at the beginning of the file. In other case I found that the file was beginning with a truncated email message. Trying to "walk on the safer side", I changed the mbox_lock setting from "fcntl" to "dotlock" in the /etc/dovecot.conf file. Any suggestions and comments about his will be highly appreciated. Capturing audio streams with Linux?

So I got a new Pocket PC this weekend (yes, you read that right, sorry, don't like the Palms on offer currently and I can at least install software on it via Windows on VMWare). One of the main things I wanted to do with it is get Audible.com again and listen to All Things Considered from NPR on the way home like I used to. Now I find out they not only don't have an agreement with Audible any longer where I can pay them for this service, but now they are podcasting, but not the whole show. *sigh* So what to do.... My thinking is to capture the stream from local affiliate and time shift until I leave work. But how do I do this (I know how to use dump with mplayer for this) without getting one gigantic file? Anyone have any experience with this? Preston

Server Replication: CenOS, coda? lustre?

Hi list, our lab is divided in two sites and we would like to have a clone of the mail server on the second site for redundancy only (used in case of a lost of connectivity with the primary mail server, with the MX entries in the DNS the clone will receive the mails instead). The problem(s) comes with the mail partition who must be replicated and synchronized over the time (and over the net) to the cloned mail server, so the users can still access their mails while we deal with the primary server. My search leads me to the coda FS (and maybe the lustre solution, but we only use opensource soft so it may only be the one year old version - which is open...). Is there on the list people who are doing such things and if you are, can you give me some clues? What I think is something like a 'one read - multiple writes' FS who can handle the flow of mails and securely replicates it to the clone server. Do we have no choice but to tolerate the lost of some emails when the primary server stops responding? btw is it realistic? Thanks, Manuel

Boot/init problem with IBM Netfinity 4500

I hope the CentOS people don't mind me cross-posting for their input. I've just done a clean, text-mode minimal WBEL4 install on an IBM Netfinity 4500, essentially the same hardware as an xSeries 340. The install went fine but now the box will boot, run through the initrd init sequence, perform its switchroot then hang here... SELinux: Initializing. SELinux: Starting in permissive mode I don't think it's an SELinux issue though, booting with selinux=0 the system just hangs after the switchroot because it's not initializing SELinux at all. It's what's coming next that's causing the problem. On a working system (different hardware) the next stage is INIT... INIT: version 2.85 booting I've tried adding some debug echo lines into rc.sysinit incase it's something in there causing the problem but the init process doesn't appear to be getting that far. So, somewhere between the initrd's switchroot and spawning INIT something's broke. It'll boot into rescue mount and I can chroot into the root filesystem and everything in there seems to be as it should. I've tried booting with selinux=0, noapic and noprobe with no change. Where next? All suggestions appreciated. Will.

GFS version compatibility

Can a GFS 6.0 and GFS 6.1 system share the same storage? I'm considering building my system using GFS 6.0 and then migrating up to 6.1 when it is more stable. I would prefer to migrate the machines one by one to avoid any overall downtime, but this would mean that some nodes would be 6.0 and other nodes would be 6.1. Will this work, or would I need to take everything down and migrate all of the nodes at once? Is there a better place for this question? Bowie

Disk problem has stopped 'df' from working

Hi folks, probably not CentOS specific but any help appreciated: One of our CentOS4 servers crashed and when checked there was a disk problem which turned out to be a faulty SATA cable on one of the RAID 1 drives. This was sorted and the server brought back up after the usual disk checks and all has been well for the last week. Today, however, I tried 'df -h' and got: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on df: `': No such file or directory I can't recall whether I tried the command just after the server was restarted (ie: whether this is a new problem) but any pointers towards possible causes/fixes would be appreciated. Also, Upi, people need more than work, they need work patterns. Making arch releases in a particular order is safer than an 'as available' order in many cases. So the particular order is 'i386 first'. If you were a (co)developer/tester/maintainer/distributor, your work pattern would be significant. So: Help row the boat, or (happily) enjoy the scenery.
