Restricting ftp users to their directory

Currently, a users directory is owned by the user and the group is ftp. The permissions are 775. In reading the MAN pages for vsftp, I do not see any other ways to retrict the user from just being able to view their won directory and the sub-dirs. Am I going wrong here? Whoever added the SCSI controller to the system should be able to tell you Brand/Model of the card and also the chipset used by the controller. This info will help you identify which SCSI module to load. IMO, this is your fastest way to solve the problem. If your SCSI card happens to be supported by Linux (see hardware compatibility list) then you know the card is dead. 2. Also, if this SCSI controller has a BIOS, then at boot time you should be able to invoke the SCSI devices configuration and see if the tape device is listed. All, This list is a "Members Only" posting list ... this is good because it prevents us from getting hundreds of Viagra commercials and such. You can only post to the list with the e-mail address that you subscribed with. If you post from another e-mail address, it will tell you that "Your post needs to be approved by a Moderator." I just want to tell everyone that I normally _DO_NOT_ approve these posts to the list. It has nothing to do with the post not being good or me not liking you or your post :) What it does have to do with is SPAM. We get hundreds of e-mails per day to each list as SPAM, and it would take several hours each day to touch each every e-mail from a non-member and verify it was relevant and not spam. I am sorry, but I just don't have time to do this. If you post to a CentOS mailing list and you get one of those messages, you should repost your comments using the correct e-mail address that you subscribed with. CentOS 4.1 - 'Older' JVM Issues

Hi Just installing a machine to replace our dev server. Currently the dev server runs many different JVM versions depending on the app the developer is working on. Some of these require older versions of java. Newer versions work fine out of the box, eg 1.4.x however i'm running into the following issue when trying to run apps against 1.3.1_02 which i have to be able to run on this box Unable to load native library: /export/disk1/opt/jdk1.3.1_02/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference anyone know any workarounds? thanks

Racoonctl tool under Centos4

Hi all, We have established several VPN tunnels between two centos4 firewalls and all works OK. But racoonctl tool returns (command used: racoonctl show-sa esp) every time this error: 08000000 18c09109 racoonctl: connect: No such file or directory. This error is produced when /var/racoon/racoon.sock file doesn't exists. I will try to put "adminsok enabled" and "adminsock /var/racoon/racoon.sock" params on racoon.conf whitout success. You can run "dmesg" after the modprobe to see the results of the module being loaded. If you see something along the lines of SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 scsi0 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.36 <Adaptec 3960D Ultra160 SCSI adapter> aic7899: Ultra160 Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 32/253 SCBs You'll know it loaded. Of course youse will make reference to Initio, not Adaptec, but you get the idea. If that works, then you should be able to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf: alias scsi_hostadapter initio If that doesn't work, you'll have to track down the right module for your card. Jim- If you run kudzu (Redhat's hardware config utility) by hand as root, does it see the card and attempt to configure it? kudzu should generate the proper magic in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf and in /etc/modprobe.conf. Based on a quick google, this should be supported by the initio module. If kudzu fails to do the magic, try modprobe initio You could also add an entry to /etc/modprobe.conf alias scsi_hostadapter initio modprobe scsi_hostadapter -- Sean

I need to install an HP Surestore dlt on a Centos 4 machine and I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Can someone either provide or point me to an online reference on how to proceed to add and configure a SCSI adapter and tape drive. I have read, but not really understood, the man page entry for st. Does kudzu handle this? /var/log/lastlog on x86_64

Hi list, this problem is already known and I'm sorry to bother if an acceptable workaround was already debated on the list. I was getting trouble with a 'grep something /var/log*' which caused the "Memory exhausted" message. With some deeper search I found the lastlog file in /var/log/ to be 1.2T sized. This seems to come from the nfsnobody's uid to be 4294967294 on x86_64 system (and -1 on i386) and the pre-allocation space for every uid (so from 0 to ...4294967294...hum..) from lastlog. Since I do not use NFS at all, can I just erase the nfsnobody from /etc/passwd and start with a blank lastlog file (this looks like a great way to nuke my system)? Or do I need to explicitly exclude this file from all my search? How do you -x86_64 users- deal with this? Hi, Since I upgraded CentOS from 3 to 4, I get those enties in logwatch. It seems to be caused by cron, opening a session everytime it executes a task. Yum

This may be considered a newbie question, and for me, yum is a new tool. I have discovered via yum, I am *supposed* to have libf2c (386) and libf2c (x86-64) installed. Searching the two libs, I find I only have the 32-bit version installed, and I need both. Should I use yum to remove the pkgs, and then reinstall, or should I use rpm to do the installs? Again, I'm from the BSD camp, so this is all new to me. Also, are the two libs in question on the distro CD's or do I need to go out and find them, or let yum find them for me and install? Postfix+sasl Outlook problem.

I have mail server on CentOS 4.1. Sasl authorization for SMTP is enabled. Thunderbird sends mail, but Outlook get an error 554, Relay access denied, error number 0x800CCC79 Outlook has a login and password for SMTP enabled. It will reduce bandwidth, not all, maybe not much, but unestablished TCP connections take less bandwidth than established, with most of the bandwidth being used by the protocol data on top of the established session (even if its just a reject). Nelson

sending key strokes to applications

All, Is there a way to send key strokes to applications under X? I wish to send F11 to mozilla/firefox to put it in full screen mode. Not sure why there is not a command line parameter to do it. Just some utility that could be run that sends a keystroke to an application. THanks Jerry

snmp values for interface traffic - Centos 3.5/x86_64

Is there a problem with the values returned from snmp for ethx interface traffic on x86_64? I have cacti graphing several servers that should peak around 200k/s and it sometimes pegs at 100M for periods of time when in fact the interfaces are not busy at all. I did a 'yum update' and rebooted, and things cleared up for a while, but now at least one is going crazy again, so perhaps the reboot just helped until something triggered the condition again. Stopping/starting snmpd doesn't help and the values from ifconfig look sane. I haven't seen anything like it on x86 servers doing otherwise similar things, just the x86_64's. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Kernel Panic!

Hey all, Long time user of Centos, I really love what you guys are doing here. I have a farm of 50 Centos 4.1 machines. (originally 4.0 updated with yum up to current 4.1). Ever since I updated to the 2.6.9-11 kernel I am getting a lot of kernel panics. 7 machines suffered kernel panics over the weekend. Funny that they were the only ones that are booted into the new kernel! The rest haven't been rebooted yet so they are still at the 2.6.9-5 kernel. They all have similar messages in the logs as show below. Any ideas on where to look for the problem? Has anyone else seen this? Changing permissions on files that only exist during USB operation

A while back I got help in getting my Palm Pilot to connect to CentOS, and through the advice I got here I was able to successfully back up my files to the computer using the CentOS default Palm utility. However, I now want to use JPilot to sync and install files. But when I attempt to sync through JPilot, I get the following error: ******************************* Syncing on device /dev/pilot Press the Hotsync button now ******************************* pi_bind Invalid argument Check your serial port and settings Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_BIND Finished I searched on the net, and it would seem that this is because of a permissions problem with the /dev/pilot files. The advice I am following is here: http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Running_JPilot_as_a_non-privileged_user.ht… On this page the writer says that there are two ways to solve the problem - make the user the owner of the device, or make the device world writable. The author of the page says "making files (especially devices) world-writable should be avoided", but I think I'm not bothered either way. In any case, when it comes to making the device owned by anyone or world-writable, I'm not sure how to proceed. Retracing some of the steps given tome on this list before, I can see that the relevant device files have the following permissions: [root@localhost dev]# ls -l /dev/ttyUSB* /dev/pilot lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Sep 3 11:57 /dev/pilot -> ttyUSB1 crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 Sep 3 11:57 /dev/ttyUSB0 crw------- 1 dave uucp 188, 1 Sep 3 11:57 /dev/ttyUSB1 So, I either want to give the user "dave" permission to use ttyUSB 1 and 0, or make those files world-writable. But where I hit a wall is that I can't figure out how to change the permissions on these files because they only appear when I hot sync the palm, a process that only lasts for a few seconds, maybe 15 or 20 at the most, and also tends to get enough attention from the CPU to make it so it's tough to switch to the command line and enter in any commands in time. I tried the following, but the settings don't seem to stick for the next sync operation: [root@localhost dev]# chown dave /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 The advice I got last time on this list did speak about permissions, but unfortunately, I didn't pursue the issue because I thought the issue had been solved when I was able to make the basic connection at all to CentOS. php mail extensions

Hi, I have recently had problems with doing a security update from the centos mirrors where the mail extensions were missing from the php package so any ecommerce sites stopped after the update via yum: php i386 4.3.2-25.ent.centos.1 update php-imap i386 4.3.2-25.ent.centos.1 update php-mysql i386 4.3.2-25.ent.centos.1 update php-pgsql i386 4.3.2-25.ent.centos.1 update We reverted back to php-4.3.2-24 to quickly solve the problem. Is there a mirror that has the complete package for CentOS 3.5? Also, am considering upgrading to CentOS 4 so is this easily done from 3.5 and would there be any problems with the packages for 4? Blew away MySQL

Unfortunately, I blew MySQL away by replacing the MySQL control tables with others and not making a copy of the folder. My data is backed up, so that is not a problem, but I cannot reinstall MySQL and create the mysql directory with the control tables (e.g. user, db, host). I have run "yum remove mysql" and "yum install mysql" and "yum install mysql-server" and the control files are not recreated. Any suggestions? Raid / dual Opteron power issues

Hi All, I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware 9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply. It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system appears to work properly. However, when running in SMP mode I get a lot of SCSI disk errors in /var/log/messages. I've upgraded the 3w_9xxx driver and firmware, but no joy (actually, I did get some joy out of recompiling the kernel. Its been several years since I last compiled a kernel and the process has changed for the better). I've been in contact with 3Ware. From the error logs I supplied to them, it looks like the issue is an insufficient power supply. Their rule of thumb is 300W for the motherboard and 35 W for each disk drive. That means that I would need (at a theoretical minimum) a 650 W power supply - which I have. I only notice the problem in SMP mode, not in uniprocessor mode. That suggests to me that (1) I have a boarderline-sufficient power supply that can support one but not two CPUs or (2) there is a problem with the combination of Opteron/3Ware 9500S-12 hardware and the x86_64 SMP kernel. I suppose there are even worse possibilities, but I'd rather not think about those right now. What do you think? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of hardware on x86_64 kernels? Does the 3w_9xxx driver work well on a x86_64 machine? Does anyone have a suggestion as to what capacity power supply I should have? Thank you, Evan

booting from a +2TB disk

I have been trying to install CentOS 4.1 on a new server today. The installation went fine but the system doesn't boot. It doesn't even get to the Grub screen. The system has a 3ware 9500 series controller and 12 250GB SATA disks which are configured for RAID5 with one hot spare. I searched on the web and noticed that this is a Grub (and Lilo) limitation. Is there any way around it other than setting up a smaller RAID device? -akop

When trying to use /usr/bin/mysql I receive this error: ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2). Incompatible Libraries

Fellow users, I'm running into some rather odd behavior trying to compile some software, and would like to know if there is maybe a fix or if I should revert back to a 32-bit version of Centos. I'm trying to compile NCAR Graphics, as well as some other weather related software on this machine which is running the Centos 4.1 x86-64 version. It's a dual Xeon processor. I've installed all the required rpms, i.e., xdevel, xaw, etc. The problem I'm seeing is during linking of the various packages, where I get messages of "skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so when searching for -lXaw". I see similar other messages when trying to link to -L X11, and so forth and so on. I've got the correct paths set in the makefiles, but not sure I understand why the libs are being shown as incompatible. If any of you have built ncarg on the x86-64 OS, I'd sure like to hear from you, and what you did to effect the compile. Thanks.. Sam -- Snowman

Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem

Hello. I am trying to create a text file that contains an accent like 'é' in it's filename on a vfat filesystem. This generates an error like the following: "testé.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load those needed modules. Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this: mount -t vfat -o iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 /dev/hdb1 /samba_backups The mount succeeded but I still cannot create or copy a file that has an accent in it's filename. Of course I can create without any problem a file without any accent once the filesystem mounted the same way. It seems that other people on other systems are having no problems. Does somebody knows what happens and what I am doing wrong, and that would have any suggestion ? Thank you. Daniel

installing on 915GAVL motherboard kernel bombs and/or X bombs

I got a new box today. 915GAVL motherboard. Celeron 2.4G 1 GIG mem 80GIG SATA drive. When I boot centos I have had various stages of success. Once I got as far as partitioning the disk manually and X blew and the machine rebooted. Couple times I have had kernel crashes at different stages of install. I have not has trouble installing before and was wondering if there are suggestions. I did try installing without X "linux text pci=noapci" and that stopped also. All anaconda says is "install exited abnormally". I went ot the hardware monitor portion and seems stable CPU temp at around 48-50C. Any ideas? Jerry

I am trying to use cut to tell me the suffix of a file. for example: echo /home/silentm/log/file.machine.log | cut -d . -f 1- I was expecting to get .log or log but I get the entire string echoed back. doing the opposite gave me what I expected: echo /home/silentm/log/file.machine.log | cut -d . -f 1 gives me /home/silentm/log/file I am trying to find a way to test if the file ends in .log? Is there an equivalent command to nfsstat -m on Centos 3.4? On solaris it reports statistics for each NFS mounted file system i.e.: /mount/point from host:/some/path Flags: vers=3,proto=tcp,sec=sys,hard,intr,link,symlink,acl,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,retrans=5,timeo=50 Attr cache: acregmin=3,acregmax=60,acdirmin=30,acdirmax=60 On a related topic, how can I make a Centos3.4 nfs server export the filesystem with an rsize/wsize of 32K. I believe the kernel supports it: $ grep MAXBL /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-27.EL/include/linux/nfsd/const.h #define NFSSVC_MAXBLKSIZE (32*1024) #define NFSSVC_MAXBLKSIZE (2*PAGE_SIZE) Although I'm confused by this similar file from the glibc-kernheaders package. $ grep MAX /usr/include/linux/nfsd/const.h #define NFSSVC_MAXVERS 3 #define NFSSVC_MAXBLKSIZE (8*1024) -Mark -- Mark Belanger LTX Corporation

'{print $NF}' log The benefit of awk is that you don't have to know how many dots are in the file. $NF just prints the last one. -Mark

when I do the the cut -d "." -f 2- I get 2 fields. If my file was /home/silentm/log/file.machine.log I get machine.log not just "log" the suffix?? Jerry
