RAID 5 vs. RAID 10

Hi, I am looking into purchasing a new server. This server will be mission-critical. I have read and somewhat understood the theories behind RAIDs 0, 1, 5, 10 & JBOD. However, I would like to get some feedback from those who have experience in implementing and recovering from a HDD failure using RAID. Hardware specs include:- Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz 2 GB RAM I would like to implement hardware RAID but am unsure as to which would be most suitable for my needs. Any advice is appreciated. Option 1 - RAID 5 (3 hdd's) + 1 hot spare Option 2 - RAID 10 (4 hdd's) + 1 "cold" spare (in the shelf) Questions I have :- 1) When should RAID 5 be implemented? 2) When should RAID 10 be implemented? 3) Is RAID 5 with a hot spare safer than RAID 10 with a "cold" spare? 4) Is it possible to configure RAID 10 to have a hot spare? 5) Should one of the HDDs fail, a hot spare w kick-in immediately and begin rebuilding. As I am planning to put in 300 GB HDDs, how long would this take on a RAID 5 vs. RAID 10? 6) Will there be a degradation in performance for users on the system (RAID 5 vs. RAID 10)? 7) What are the disadvantages of using RAID 5 vs. RAID 10? CentOS 4 snag with htaccess

I'm hitting a snag with htaccess. Have created .htaccess and .htpasswd files, set up apache directory options just like always... the exact same setup works fine on CentOS 3, but I can't seem to get it to authenticate on CentOS 4? Am I just being blind stupid (as in not seeing something 'exactly the same') or is there something different I'm missing? I have selinux running in warn mode I think it was, but not fully enabled. Open Office 1.9.x

Having used Open Office 1.9.x on the XP side of my box, I decided to install it on the CentOS side. (The default OO was 1.1.2, for heaven's sake!) I downloaded the Linux 386 version from the OO site. I immediately ran into problems-- 1) The installation instructions were for OO 1.x. 2) The download appears to be source RPMs. Although I've used UNIX & Linux for over 15 years, there are still some empty spots in my toolbox--and dealing with RPMs in one of them. (YUM is SO much nicer!) Has anyone added OO1.9.113 to CentOS? Where can I find info on what I need to do to get OO1.9.x added to my CentOS installation? Any help will be much appreciated! -mj-

Centos 4.1, ClamScan and Kernel Leaks

I recently installed ClamAV on my Centos 4.1 system (AMD Athlon 64 3500 +, 1GB RAM). I'm using postfix, with fetchmail to retrieve email from remote ISP accounts and processing emai through a spamfilter plugin, which is a shell script that passes inbounds through clamscan and spamassassin before handing it off to a local procmail for processing and delivery. Pror to installing ClamAV, the system stayed up for months at a time. Since then, I'm seeing a lot of system freezes and crashes, at least once per day. I'm also seeing a fair number of complaints in the boot log about ACPI errors and the like. I'm on kernel 2.6.9-11.EL. In the messages log, I can see where just prior to the system freeze, there are a sequence of messages regarding the system's inability to reset the USB adapter, of which no devices are attached. Almost immediately after, I see errors with the system gets error messages on read capacity on the hard drives. After this appears to reset itself, I start seeing kernel messages about available memory dropping from 1GB to less than 1MB. Any suggestions/advice? How to manually mount LVM partition

Hello list, For some strange reason, the hard drive on one of our servers crashed. The hard drive was using LVM and it was sending these messages during boot-up: EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): ext3_find_entry: reading directory ... EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): ext3_set_inode_loc: unable to read inode block= ... I want to be able to at least access the logical volumes inside that hard drive. How then do I manually mount the LVM partition when it is connected as slave in another computer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Has anyone seen this before? Palm Pilot, USB, pppd and udev

I've a line like this that creates /dev/pilot link in my local udev rules: BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld*", KERNEL="ttyUSB*[13579]", SYMLINK="pilot" And it seems to work fine for doing normal sync operation to Gnome Palm applet (well, not sure about that KERNEL parameter, however ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1 look exactly the same, no other way to specify "use second device" as far as I can see). But, if I use the USB connection to connect to the network (using my Linux box as gateway by running "pppd auth -chap +pap login local ms-dns 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.2 pilot" and doing SNAT) I've noticed that sometimes when I disconnect, the ttyUSB* devices are not removed by udev. When devices are removed, I'm getting something like this in my log files: kernel: visor ttyUSB0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 kernel: visor ttyUSB1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1 However, when devices are not removed, I'm getting a bit different message: kernel: usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 4 kernel: visor 2-1:1.0: device disconnected I've just started playing with my Palm under Linux, and so far I've only noticed this when using PPP over USB. So far when doing plain-old synchronzation (to gnome Palm applet) it seems that devices are always created and removed as expected. Has anybody else noticed this and/or has advice what to do? system-config-display problem

Had centos 4.1 set up and running with X. Had to replace the monitor to an Acer LCD monitor (model AL1714). When I try to reconfigure X, "system-config-display" seems ok going through the first stage of detecting the graphics card but then returns a floating "Input not supported" message to the screen and nothing happens afterward. I understand that I should probably strip the install of any RedHat images, trademark, etc, as to not infringing any copyright. Hi Joseph, FreeRadius 1.0.1-3 works fine on my systems using local system authentication (using UNIX instead of PAM). In my users configuration file, I have the following defined: "DEFAULT Auth-Type = System". Please also note, however, that your daemon will require READ access to your /etc/shadow file and you probably have it running with little to no permissions. You should create a new group (ex: shadow) and assign it to your /etc/shadow with read access and add your FreeRadius user into the group. That should correct your authentication issues. I vaguely recall having problems when I first tried to have it use PAM authentication (based on the RHEL3 version), but I haven't looked at the issue since then. Regards, -Joshua

I'm always weary to thrown a yesteryear i960 at RAID. The i960s really have a 50-60MBps throughput limit. Granted, if you're going to do RAID-5, then it'll get you far better performance than a 3Ware 8506 series at writes. The 3Ware (let alone even software RAID-5) will kill it at reads, but when it comes to writes, 3Ware 8506s won't break 30MBps (and software RAID-5 will typically either do worse, or slam your CPU-memory-I/O interconnect so hard it'll be busy with nothing else). I sure wish a tier-1 OEM put an XScale solution in, instead of age-old i960 products. In many cases, a few are vastly more experienced, featured and superior IMHO. I think what you're looking for is an experience where all the interfaces and schema are emulated to you can run any Microsoft management tools, tools written explicitly for undocumented MS schema and interfaces. You're looking at the problem from an impossible solution standpoint. That's the problem.

Especially for components that are not Samba, but most people only look at for _limited_ Samba use. E.g., MS Kerberos _only_ for authentication of Samba as a member server in a MS ADS DC controller domain (NOT ;-). UNIX/Linux Kerberos servers can do _far_more_ than that, even for 200x/XP clients. Sometimes I think the best marketing done for Windows and Microsoft products is by UNIX/Linux people because they don't even know what services and capabilities are actually offered by UNIX/Linux platforms - be it open source, commercial, etc... ;->

Dude ... 1) I specifically asked you if you had an true MS ADS DC. 2) I mentioned MS Services for UNIX (SFU) Dude, if you had a true MS ADS DC and were already authenticating Samba against it, you _should_also_ use SFU to share out NIS from the same. Now you just control your netgroups at your MS ADS DC. Furthermore, you can even setup true UNIX/Linux NIS "slave" servers to SFU, just like you can setup UNIX/Linux BIND "secondary" DNS servers to MS ADS-integrated DNS. Think of NIS as "flat file" like old CIFS (except without the broadcast non-sense). Whereas CIFS moved the Reigstry-SAM password DB network-wide, used NT LAN Manager authentication and introduced WINS as a name resolution service, NIS basically does the same for _any_ UNIX files. You don't even need DNS. You can even use pGINA to replace your NT/200x/XP login to authenticate against other servers. I used to do similar with NISGINA back in the '90s (before MS ADS was even an option for Windows networks). GINA is NT's graphical login/authentication system when you logon. Now that MS has gotten serious, you can just use SFU on your MS ADS DC _directly_! Now you're hosting maps, and ensuring ADS objects _match_ those of NIS maps. Alternatively, if you're worried about security, you can use Kerberos for your password store (instead of NIS hashes in passwd). Now that gets a little more client-specific, but you _can_ use MS ADS' Kerberos to provide a "one-way trust" down to a Keberos realm. > Actually, I guess the next integration will be with Active Directory. Once your PDC is Samba, then it's cake to do NIS. If you already made your Network ADS' bitch, then just get MS SFU. Trust me on this, it makes life 100x easier! Just FYI ... Once you ADS, you're _always_ going to be Microsoft-controlled. Samba will _never_ reverse engineer all of Microsoft's LDAP schema. I know MS ADS is required for a lot of new services. In such case, consider segmenting, maintaining and sychronizing the MS ADS to Red Hat Directory Server (fka Netscape Directory Server, NsDS). Florida Institute of Technology's (FIT's) "acctsync" is a ADS DC-side service designed to retrieves any changes or sends any updates (like password) back to their "master" NsDS tree (acctsync also now supports OpenLDAP, although limitedly). FIT did this because back in 1999, when Windows 2000 starting infiltrating their network, they did _not_ want to put UNIX/Linux reliability at the mercy of MS ADS. They were already running a full LDAP tree with NsDS, and even if they were still using legacy NIS, SFU 1.0 didn't offer a good NIS/NFS service yet (that wasn't really until 3.0 -- current version is 3.5 and _free_). You better decide soon whether or not you're going to put your entire network at the mercy of MS ADS, or if you want to maintain some anonymous control. You really need an independent architect to come in and make your life easier. Because it seems your department isn't aware of all your interoperability options. I'm sure your management must think that Windows is 100x easier to support than UNIX/Linux because of your current setup. The issue is when you have native MS ADS DCs, because Samba doea not understand MS ADS DC-to-DC replication. Otherwise, the authentication process to clients is no different. But that's only authentication. Again, stop thining "aggregate," think naming, directory, authentication and file services individually.

You do _not_ need to run a single native MS ADS server on your network to: - Authenticate Windows clients via MS Kerberos (let alone with pGINA to standard Kerberos 5) - Serve out SAM and other MS schema from its LDAP, the ones that have been documented - Handle SMB signing and other protocol features (even ones that are mega-buggy in MS' own implementations) At this point, Samba 3.0 is a _better_ SMB service for Windows 2000 than Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has attested that it recommends only Windows XP Pro clients for full ADS 2003 support. Ziff-Davis testing has shown this to be true. Samba automagically optimizes for the client that is connecting, with Microsoft giving up on performance/features on anything pre-NT5.1 (XP/2003).

Hi, I'm just curious about whether some people here were able to make their webcam work under CentOS 4 using the pwc module (with the stock kernel) ? Mine is a PCVC730K (ToUcam Fun) that I would like to connect to my private webserver but, as soon as I connect it, the system freeze (at least not the whole system but the current console, that's weird). Is there something particular to do to make it work or is it just impossible ? Thanks. Gilles.

It is _not_ a complete "enterprise directory solution." Samba includes: - A Legacy Registry-SAM compatible password store - A Legacy NetBIOS-WINS naming service and protocol - A Legacy NTLM (NT LAN Manager) authentication protocol And then "wraps into" traditional UNIX services like UNIX resolver (DNS, NIS, NSSwitch, etc...), UNIX authentication (files, NIS, PAM, LDAP, etc...), etc... Newer versions of Samba 2.2 include: - MS ADS subset schema for LDAP (OpenLDAP often used) And Samba 3.0 also introduces: - SASL authentication with Kerberos stores (either MS ADS Kerberos or a MS'ized UNIX Kerberos client/KDC services). Samba strives to be a "drop in replacement" for a native Windows DC and file server, including naming (browser) and authentication. But you do _not_ have to use Windows-centric naming or authentication. You can build a network where you either are UNIX/Linux NsDS/OpenLDAP "tree'd" with or without Kerberos, possibly authenticating against native MS ADS DCs or even Samba emulating ADS DCs, or maybe using pGINA on the clients, or you can even have a completely segmented NsDS/OpenLDAP tree/network from native MS ADS network, and use some synchronization between the two. Samba itself is definitely _not_ a UNIX client designed service. And even if you have native MS ADS deployed, you should be running services on the DCs to present UNIX-like interfaces for authentication, naming, etc... on the server, not trying adhoc, manual, kludge in things. And if you're old MS CIFS/PDC, get off of it. Get your network to NsDS (now Red Hat Directory Server) before it's too late -- even if just for your UNIX portion. Or at least introduce 23+ year-old NIS for things. Golden Rule: The _client_ is always right. Always present the _native_ interfaces of the client OS from a server when it comes to: 1) naming 2) directory/store 3) authentication 4) file services Whether you are a true UNIX, e.g., DNS/NIS, NIS, hash, NFS (NIS) DNS/NIS, NIS, Kerberos, NFS (NIS-Kerberos) NIS+, NIS+, RSA, NFS (NIS+) DNS, LDAP, RSA, NFS (Sun One) DNS, LDAP, hash, NFS (LDAP) DNS, LDAP, SASL/Kerberos, NFS (LDAP-SASL/Kerberos) Or maybe a Windows, e.g., NetBIOS/WINS, SAM, NTLM, SMB (CIFS) DNS, MS LDAP, MS Kerberos, SMB (ADS) Or maybe even a Novell, e.g., SAP, Bindery, hash/RSA, NCP (Bindery) NLSP, X.500/DAP, RSA, NCP (NDS aka eDirectory) You should interface with your clients with what _they_ expect, not what your "back-end" is by default. -- Bryan J.
