passwordless ssh

Hi, I am just migrating to Centos from fedora core 3. I have 3 boxes involved here: Box A --Fedora 3 (doing the dns, http, sendmail serving duties) Box B --CentOS Box C --CentOS I used to run root passwordless ssh both ways from boxes A and B mainly set up to keep the 2 boxes in sync w/rsync ... these 2 boxes normally ran one being the slave and the other being the master...the master did all the serving duties...if something happened where the master couldn't do it anymore, then the slave becomes master. I have tried and tried the following #ssh-keygen -t dsa (and rsa using authorized_keys(2) or both depending...) when it asks for passphrase...just enter and enter # scp /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub boxA:/root/.ssh/ # ssh boxB #<password> boxbshell # cat /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub >>/root/.ssh/authorized_key or key2 or both. # exit boxashell # ssh boxb <password> will NOT let me do passwordless now then I have gotten it to work by using the following /root/.ssh/.config : Host remotehost User remoteuser Compression yes Protocol 2 RSAAuthentication yes StrictHostKeyChecking no ForwardAgent yes ForwardX11 yes IdentityFile /home/localuser/.ssh/id_remotehost_dsa taken from: http://www.davz.net/static/howto/sshkeys I can get it to work from 2 boxes both ways...but when I set up the 3rd box, it works but one of the other boxes that was good does not do it anymore. I go back edit the authorized_key files.... check the other boxes make sure they still work set up the faulty box again...get it working then one of the other good boxes doesn't work I then start looking into the .config file...has some pretty dangerous things in it that I really don't care for but that's where I am right now. does anyone know of anything specific that Centos is doing here? or what can be my problem? X stopped working after compiling new kernel

Hi again, After quite a few stability problems with CentOS 4 and my laptop I have decided to go back to Centos 3. I installed it and got everything working alright, apart from the wireless network card. I need to use ndiswrapper and so require a newer kernel (2.4.26 at least), so I downloaded the kernel source 2.4.30, copied the right configuration (config-i686), made oldconfig and installed the kernel. Everything boots alright but X complaints about invalid checksum in the video bios. Searching for this error message it mentions that I should enable agpgart and support for my card (i852 or so) in the kernel, but it is already supported (I have tried it as a module and compiled right in). Anyone got any suggestions on how to get X working again? Do I need to get any extra RHEL patches before I can compile the code? Any help will be greatly appreciated. New to CentOS, is this a safe bet?

I know this may be a stupid place to ask, but I have to ask. I'm looking for a new Linux distro to use and support. I've been a loyal purchaser of SuSE Linux Pro for the last 3 years. I've paid my $90 loyally, in part because I wanted money to actually go to someone working on OSS, but also because I thought it was a good bargain, to get a quality, tested distro for that cost. The problem is that lately SuSE is sliding down the path towards being considered Fedora-like by Novell. So when I install SuSE I don't know if I'm going to get security updates next week or the week after. My $90 may have just gone to be a 6-month or 1-year beta tester. I need more stability than that. So I'm considering CentOS based on some articles I've read lately, as my solution. What I'm looking for is a good solid distro that COULD do some multi-media if I go hunt down the RPMs or if there's a YUM repository (I'm familiar with Fedora), but mostly a solid distro where I can do Java work daily and where the distro is memory efficient, solid and stable. And also where if I decide to run it for a year or more I won't be forced to upgrade. Now I believe CentOS promises all of these. My concerns, in terms of it being a safe bet are... #1 - Is there any reason to fear Red Hat bringing the hammer down and thus ruining the party? I'd love to see an FAQ or something to the effect that legally there's no way for Red Hat to block what CentOS is doing. #2 - Is the community strong? I'm new to the community and when I look on distrowatch it's way down the list. But is this accurate or is CentOS picking up steam? I get the feeling it's picking up steam. The reason this is important is because I'd hate to pick it only to watch it wither and have to go distro-hopping again. Once again, looking for stability. Any responses that can help me decide are appreciated. Thanks. Preston

problem with swap and upgrade to 4 from 3.3

Dear All, I've tried to upgrade a Centos 3.3 installation to 4.0 using YUM and some instructions I found in a thread on the Centos Forum. The initial problem I had with Python 2.3/2.2 has been resolved, and now I am trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 prior to the yum upgrade, unfortunately it bails out at the end with dependancy erros on Xfree86. At this point I decided to use the CDs with a the "upgradeany" option. This went fine initally but then bails out with a swap error, this is because swap on this machine is on /dev/md2 (a mirrored set) and this was not set up at the original install time, as all the other partitions were: when the machine was installed, one of my staff did not set the swap up mirrored, so I had to mirror the swap partition manually after the original install. This works fine, but the machine cant enable the swap at boot becuase it does this prior to enabling the RAID subsystem, so the swap startup fails, but once the machine is up, the swap is actually running without any manual intervention. Its this error, that stops anaconda from upgrading the OS from the CDs I note on other machines I have installed when the swap was mirrored on the original install, it still appears to enable swap prior to the RAID subsystem, without any errors. So I guessed this might be a problem with the ram disk image, so I created a new one using mkinitrd, but the swap still fails at startup, thus preventing me from using the CDs to upgrade the box. I guess I could set the swap back to an unmirrored set, run the upgrade from the CDs then mirror it again, but this is not ideal, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this little RAID niggle with the swap caused by not RAIDing the swap parition originally on install? OT: P4 Vs Xeon for Linux

I have just had delivered a new HP Proliant server and it is based on an Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor. On site already we have an Acer Altos G310 with a P4 2.8GHz processor. The new HP server was destined for another site with about 30 persons to service some simple file and print sharing and to manage their email (postfix + MailScanner). The Acer is hosting our Intranet, file and print sharing and soon to have our email + bacula backup services for potentially 250 users. Performance wise, would it be worth the small effort to move the Intranet etc. onto the Xeon-based server and ship the P4 to the other site or will the potential performance gains not be significant? Any insight appreciated. Thanks

ACLs iin Centos 4

Hi There, It seems the default installer with Centos 4, enables DACs and the extra ACLs which DUMP cannot handle.... so I get errors like "DUMP: ACLs in inode #nnnn won't be dumped" since DUMP and RESTORE is integral to my back policy for some 30+ machines I would like to know if its possible to turn off the extra ACLs in the file system as I really don't need them... Can tune2fs do this for me or do I have to re-build the filesystems with some option that I currently don't know... P.

YUM - Did directories change on the mirrors?

I didn't see this in the mail archives, maybe I missed it. I'm running CentOS 3. It looks like the $releasever directory has been dropped from mirrors.centos.org. This just happened in the last week (I run a daily cron to check for updates) My yum.conf (for CentOS 3) has url's defined like: baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/$releasever/addons/$basearch/ But when I run yum I get errors: Server: CentOS-3 - Addons retrygrab() failed for: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Executing failover method failover: out of servers to try Error getting file http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Using my browser I see that this URL doesn't exist: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info But this does (notice the 3/ is missing): http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Is this a permament change or a temporary one due to server updates? This Proliant (ml330 G3) has an HP CSB-6 (LSI/Megaraid) disk controller that isn't recognised by the installer. A quick search on Google reveals drivers from RH7 - AS2.1 but nothing for 3 or 4 unless anyone knows different!? If not I'll just have to disable it and install a supported RAID card. Anyone!? Nigel

graphical shutdown

The shutdown phase is only textual or it can be like on bootup where with "esc" I can see (if i want) the messages ? I can never say if it's me or the "graphical" thing is abandoned ... Just a minor irritation. 1. When I shutdown from the GDM menu, most of the time the screen goes black and none of the "stopping..." messages are visible until just about the time the mounted filesystems are shutdown, about three lines before acpi poweroff. 2. Always when I shutdown from my desktop manager (IceWm in my case), I get all the messages immediately. Once in a blue moon, this works in case 1 as well. No big deal. I'm just wondering if anyone can explain this behavior. -- Collins When I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, 8 million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world.... I understand the the way to stop the constant polling of my CD-ROM drive (only used every few years to install the OS) is to disable the hal service. Is there any downside to disabling hal other that the lack of auto-insert notification? Thanks.

Johnny probably should have stressed that you need to add the ForwardX11 and ForwardX11Trusted keys on your client machine (the machine your X server is running on). Knowing about the -Y flag is also a Good Thing. Thanks! Running CentOS on very old hardware

A friend has an old Pentium-133 laptop with 32MB of memory and a 1.3 GB hard disk that he wants to use as a web server for a very small community. Will CentOS (or any other RHEL derived distribution for that matter) install and run with acceptable performance on such a system, or will a specialized distribution like Damn Small Linux be a better choice? In this case, disk space is not a big concern so getting the smallest footprint is not a high priority. Alfred

Pre-i686 (PPro-P4, K6/Athlon, Cyrix M2/C3, WinChip2?) architectures take issue some applications. E.g., Red Hat, among other distros, have not bothered with pre-i686 NPTL support. There are better distros for i486 (K5, Cyrix Mx/M1, WinChip) or i586 (exactly Pentium-only) architectures than anything Fedora Core based (RHEL), SuSE Linux based (SLES/NOES), Mandrake Linux or similarly based. Although Cobind Linux is supposedly a rebuild of Fedora for older systems. And I've found it runs XFCE pretty good on as little as 48MB. CentOS 3.x might run on it, not sure what are memory requirements for it. RHEL 2.x would run even better. 64MB should be more that enough for CentOS4 as long as you use it as dedicated plain web server (no fancy stuff, no PHP, no databases, only static content). SSL would slow down things somewhat, but would be acceptable. ext3 writeback mode for root parition

I'm trying to enable writeback mode for the root partition. However, adding the normal option "rootflags=data=writeback" to my grub.conf kernel line doesn't result in writeback mode (according to `dmesg`). how to install R statistics package on Centos-4

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and interested in installing the R statistics package on a Centos-4 machine using yum, if possible. From the R website, I see that I can download an rpm for rhel 4. I don't know if the equivalent exists for Centos. I did look through the list that 'yum list available' yields and didn't seem to find a package for R. Can you recommend how best to install R? Should I install the rhel 4 binary or should I compile from source? How do I use yum to install a downloaded rpm? etc. Thanks for your help, Allison

CentOS 4 Software Raid1 questions

I want to mirror an existing 40GB data only drive using software Raid1 on my new CentOS 4 server. The existing drive is connected to a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller (non-raid). I have read about mdadm and understand how to create the Raid1 on /dev/mdxx devices. However I would like to know if the existing data on the orignal 40GB drive in the system will be destroyed when I create the raid with mdadm. Also do the 2 drives after being setup with mdadm have to be reformated? Both the 40GB drives are now formated with ext3. If not, will the added 40GB drive assigned to the Raid1 atomaticly sync to the original 40GB drive. If so, what do I need to do to assure this will happend automaticly? Along the lines of the recent discussion about ReiserFS support, I was wondering if it is compatible with SELinux? I know there are some file system support issues regarding it... Another random question: is there a way to get/use Disk Druid under a running installation? This would make adding new disks, RAIDs, LVM management, etc. a breeze compared to what it can be like sometimes currently. It's all there and very easy to use during the install, but I haven't found an easy way to add software raid-1 pairs w/LVM2 to a currently running installation. Regards...

Compiling Kernel Modules

Hi, Here'a a question - is it possible to compile a single module (distributed in the kernel source tree) for the current CentOS kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5) without recompiling the entire kernel and all other modules. I basically need reiserfs3 (nb. why is it disabled? it's a module, you use it, it doesn't wreck anything...) and I don't really want to change the rest of the kernel, and I'd like to have the minimum amount of fuss on future kernel upgrades. Now I know external modules can be compiled without recompiling the kernel - question is how to do it for an internal kernel module. What I've tried: I've installed the kernel source code, copied over the kernel settings (the entire /usr/src/kernels/2.6.... dir) onto it. run make menuconfig and selected modular reiserfs. A diff of the new and old configs shows only reiser module (and suboptions for selinux) has been enabled. So no other changes have been made. Now a make fs/reiserfs/ almost works, but it borks on some sort of .tmp_versions/reiserfs.mod problem (file not present). The resultant reiserfs.o doesn't work as reiserfs.ko (not sure if it should, though).. I can't run make modules_install without first compiling all the other modules... Should I just grep through the .config file and replace all (except reiser) =m with =n's (and rerun make oldconfig to make sure it's still consistent)? And then run make modules modules_install? Any ideas? Basically all I want is reiserfs3 for the current CentOS4 kernel... Cheers, MaZe.

Does anybody know where I might find a stock standard ready rolled binary CentOS Kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5.EL) rpm package BUT with the skas mode uml (user mode linux) patch applied ? If not I will try and build one myself......gulp.... ;-) Is there any good howto's out their on how to do this? It all appears very different with CentOS 4.0 and the 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL.src.rpm. Vacation program

Is anyone else running the 'vacation' mail forwarder on Centos 3? When I 'make install' I get the following error: strip: /usr/bin/vaclook: File format not recognized When I try and use vacation (with postfix), it 'goes through the motions' but inbound mail bounces with <nkendrick(a)munged.home.local>: Command died with status 1: "/usr/bin/vacation -a nkendrick(a)munged.com nkendrick" I have sent a mail to the postfix list too but I thought I'd see if anyone here has any ideas too. [ANNOUNCE] Areca SATA RAID drivers for CentOS 4.0

Hi, To follow up my CentOS 4.0/Areca SATA RAID driver disk I created a month or two ago, I have now created kernel-module-arcmsr RPMs containing just the kernel module to track the kernel updates. This means: a) No need to patch, rebuild and maintain customised kernels for Areca support b) Keep everything maintained with RPM I've taken the latest 1.20.00.07 kernel driver source as found in the 2.6.12-rc1-mm3 kernel, and built it for all variations of the i586/i686/x86_64 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL CentOS 4.0 kernels. I've also updated the driver disk so it now has the same kernel driver, but built for all of the i586/i686/x86_64 2.6.9-5.0.3.EL kernels used on the installer. There is also a nosrc RPM for the various utilities Areca offer, but you'll have to build that one yourself as I don't know what license they're released under. As before, you can get them from here: http://www.bodgit-n-scarper.com/code.html#centos I only have an x86_64 machine with an Areca card, so if anyone is using these packages on an i586 or i686 machine, please drop me a note so I at least know they work. yum pinning rpms

I did a little googling for this, but only found meaningless references, since pin has too, too common other meanings. Is there a way to pin a version of a particular package with yum/rpm? I have the rpms for the beta 2.0 version of OpenOffice installed, so I'm not interested in the updates for OpenOffice 1.1.2-24.6.0.EL4 which are now coming in. Is there a way to instruct yum to ignore this update but accept other updates? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but in spite of many years working with Linux I'm not an rpm/yum heavyweight. NFS server problem

Hi Everybody! I've got a nasty problem with a fresh install of CenOS 4 (actually re-install, to rule out any configuration problems accumulated over time). We have a c4-based machine (further Server), which is supposed to serve a lot of files over NFS. In the course of the setup I was checking how the backups (using rsync) would work and got a lot of errors reported by rsync about non-existent (sub) directories. When I went to check the reported directory on the Client, it was indeed not accessible, although it's name in the parent directory was visible. Later I've found that rsync is irrelevant, the problem could be reproduced by just running find. To illustrate (run on the client) cd /mnt/Server/export find . > /dev/null ./a/b/c: No such file or directory ls -l ./a/b ls: /mnt/server/a/b/c: No such file or directory (then follows the listing of remaining files in ./a/b) If you fo just 'ls ./a/b', the output includes 'c' among the others. NOW THE TRICK: On the Server, do ls /export/a/b/c (expected output follows) Now on the client everything is OK! I've found a similar bug here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=144556 although it is filed against fc3, the symptoms seem to be the same, although noone mentioned that server-side trick. I've tried several client machines (rhl7.3, c3,c4), tcp/udp, v2/v3, sync/async and also set actimeo=0 - nothing seem to affect the behavior. And nothing is printed in the logs - neither on client nor server (granted, I don't have debug enabled). At some point I suspected hardware (like lost or corrupted ethernet packets), but the missing directory on the client side is missing until the trick is applied on the server side, pretty consistently. umount/mount may help with that particular dir, but the bug would show up in different place. And as per bug referenced above, I could confirm, that all the dirs reported missing have the size 12288 (haven't spotted bigger, but maybe because I haven't checked every one of them). Just in case: the Server is Dell PowerEdge 2850 connected through Gigabit interface (e1000) (latest BIOS updates applied in the course of troubleshooting). I did not try to re-install the server with c3, but even if it works, it does not seem to be an option, because we plan to use selinux, which is missing in c3 (and yes, I tried disabling selinux with setenforce=0). Hello, We have a few systems where udevd seems to failing silently on Opteron based Centos 4 boxes. Has anyone else seen this? -geoff
