rebuilding anaconda for centos 4.0

Continuing the thread, if there's anyone out there who has successfully completed an anaconda rebuild (buildinstall & genhdlist), please let me know that it can be done, either privately or to the list. Having solved the kernel/loopback mount problem, I now have an anaconda that whose installer process dies at the point where it tries to install the first RPM. I have diffed the contents of the various file system images against the stock images, and I see nothing that would indicate a problem. Laptop issues

Hello CentOS, I'm trying to isolate a problem with a notebook. I've tried to install CentOS from CD - but once I get the start screen, I type 'enter' to begin installing. The installer starts to load but only gets as far as: running install running /sbin/loader That's it. Nothing beyond that... locks up solid. The equipment is ECS 736, P4 2.6Ghz /1024MB RAM, 40GB HDD. General question on QA from a Fedora Core fan

Apologies if this ends up a dup, but there seems to have been a problem with my original subscription. ------------------------------ Hello, I am currently using Fedora on most of my servers. It does pretty well. I do have occasional problems which seem to me to stem from poor QA. For example, /usr/bin/enable <queue> coming back with "Enable: I don't know what to do!" after a cups errata upgrade when I would try to re-enable a printer. The "-c#" (multiple copies) option to lpr not working for serial printers due to a bug in the "serial" backend. (But to which a patch is applied to fix the same problem in the parallel backend). Finding my first flaw in the OS when I try to check the CD media during the install. The media check always fails. (Yes, there are going to be bugs, but finding the first one before you even get the installation media checked looks really bad. And, yes, the ide=nodma workaround fixes it.) I was very hopeful about CentOS shielding me and my clients from silly stuff like this. However, looking at the RHEL source for the serial backend to cups, it looks as though the patch to make "-c#" work on it has not been applied to serial.c. And the media check still fails with CentOS unless I use "ide=nodma", just like with Fedora. This is disappointing. Now, I wish to make it perfectly clear that I *DO NOT* consider this to be the fault of CentOS, as I understand that the policy is to remain faithfully compatible to RHEL. But if I ask RH about this, I know that I will get an "oh so politically correct" answer. On the positive side, looking at the errata, it looks as though CentOS has drastically fewer notices than Fedora, and I assume that is because there really are more problems (security of otherwise) shaken out during testing. Obviously, not being forced to upgrade due to withdrawal of support with regards to security patches every 1.5 years is a plus. So I welcome comments. If I switch my clients from Fedora to CentOS, they don't have the latest and greatest (and, for example, I need OpenOffice 2.0 ASAP for one of my clients due to it's Access-like interface to PostgreSQL), but how much advantage am I really looking at with regards to stability? i.e. I know all the reasons that CentOS *should* be more rock solid stable. Booting CentOS with LILO?

Hello all! I would like to know if is possible to use LILO as the boot loader instead of the default GRUB. My question comes because I tried to run lilo command but the message "command not found" appear. It sounds like my only boot loader option in CentOS is GRUB ¿?. fsckcheck

While working on getting software raid working, I was unable to shutdown CentOS normally. After a forced power shutdown, I noticed that my gnome background was missing and I could not change the background image or color. Trying to shutdown the server normally did not work either, it would just hang. I suspected that the file system was damaged and was not fixed automaticly on boot. I tried the old Red Hat trick of creating an empty file with the name "fsckcheck" in the root directory and then forcing a reboot of the server. This seems to fix the problem with the file system. It turns out that the 2.6.9-5.0.3.EL series of kernels has a bug in loop back mounting file systems: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=105595 (the bug is filed against fc3 but affects the original centos 4.0 kernels as well.) The bug prevents the initrd.img in anaconda from being populated, and everything goes kaplooey as soon as the PXE boot tries to do anything with it's initrd. It would also affect rebuilt ISO images. The fix is to upgrade the host running buildinstall to a 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL kernel, which has a fix for bug 105595. CentOS 4 install problems

Hi folks, Has anyone experienced install problems with CentOS 4. More precisely anaconda crashing with some remarks regarding python scripts. The funny thing is the first installation went well. It's the re-install that fails. Although I completely changed partitioning and reformatted the drive. I had the same problem with fedora core 3 some time ago. To me it looks as if it's something to do with the anaconda version that comes together with the 2.6 kernel. Anyone who can help me out, thanks Pascal.

relation "pg_user" does not exist error when running pg_dump

Hi, I'm trying to move a postgres database to another server and I ran into some weird problems. Pg_dump command was not giving any output and the logs got filled with some SELinux errors. So I turned off SELinux completely (and rebooted). Now I'm getting the following error message: # pg_dump -U postgres database > database.out pg_dump: SQL command failed pg_dump: Error message from server: ERROR: relation "pg_user" does not exist pg_dump: The command was: SELECT (SELECT usename FROM pg_user WHERE usesysid = datdba) as dba, pg_encoding_to_char(encoding) as encoding, datpath FROM pg_database WHERE datname = 'database' Thank you for your help! vsftp 500 OOPS: SSL: cannot load RSA key

vsftpd-2.0.1-5 I am trying to get vsftpd to start with ssl_enabled=yes and not having much success. The config file works when ssl_enabled=No and does not work when ssl_enabled=Yes. I have tried setting the following: rsa_cert_file=/usr/share/ssl/certs/inet06cert.pem which is the public certificate and this: rsa_cert_file=/usr/share/ssl/private/inet06key.pem which is the server private key. Both these are in use by the apache web server as : SSLCertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/inet06cert.pem and SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/share/ssl/private/inet06key.pem respectively and I have no trouble using ssl with that service. As far as I can tell the certificates are in the right places and do the right things for apache but vsftpd chokes. Since vsftpd does not deign to log what is going on I cannot tell what it finds disagreeable about this setup. Does anyone have any idea what would prevent vsftpd from using a certificate that works with apache? Is there any documentation telling you whether tomcat5 was compiled against the 1.4.2 tree or the 1.5? You could try downloading the srpm, patching it to use the 1.4.2 java and then re-create your own rpm. tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp

Is anyone running tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2- sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp ? I'm getting weird dependencies which don't make sense, notably: Error: Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_02-fcs is needed by package java-1.5.0-sun-compat I want to use 1.4.2 not 1.5 and it doesn't make sense to have jdk = 2000:1.5.0_02-fcs, unless I'm missing something? I do have java-1.4.2- sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp installed as you can see bellow. Rewriting outgoing email addresses

Hi Everyone, I have a query which I hope others may find interesting as well. The company that I work for has users that subscribe to many different mailing lists for marketting and informational purposes. What I would like to be able to do is centrally manage this internally so that only one copy of the message is received regardless of the number of people subscribed to each list which we can then either deliver the message internally to anyone interested or via public folders on Cyrus IMAP/MS Exchange. The second thing I would like to be able to do is allow people to send to the appropriate list but for their email address to be rewritten to that of the registered email address of the list therefore everyone in the company who is subscribed to the list gets the replies. I am guessing that the following steps would have to be done:- * Setup an internal email account for each list (e.g. centos-list(a)companya.com) * Configure sendmail to either forward the message onto the exchange server and store in public folders or use filtering rules to deliver it to the appropriate Cyrus mailbox. * Maintain a list of all mailing lists subscribed to and have sendmail rewrite the from headers if anyone tries to send a message to one of the registered list addresses. I'm sure I've forgotten things here but I haven't got a clue how to set this up. Is this possible using the included programs with Centos (Sendmail, Cyrus IMAP, procmail)? As a second query but still related is it possible for sendmail to rewrite incoming email addresses? At the company we have various addresses in the format of firstname.surname.ext(a)company.com (where ext could be support or devel, etc). At present we setup distribution lists on exchange for everyone of these addresses for every user and it is becoming a management nightmare. What I would like to be able to do is for sendmail to notice this double-dot format and based on the ext bit to forward it onto the appropriate user as well as the relevent catch all address (i.e. send to firstname.surname(a)company.com and then also send to ext(a)company.com) Sorry if this is a bit long winded but hopefully I've explained clearly enough for someone to offer some insight Thanks in advance Regards Lee

All, I am installing a BOXD915GAVL system and centos 4. The CPU is a 2.8 GIG celeron D with 1GIG memory and 120GIG Seagate drive. Is is VERY slow. What gives? Any other experience with something like this? It is installing but even after install when booting it is taking VERY long time to even get to the Checking new hardware screen. Thanks, Jerry

That's why you can't use Ghost to clone HFS or ReiserFS partitions. Hello all We have two very important workstations dedicated to tasks of development and investigation. At the moment we have installed a dual boot platform with CentOS 4.0 and Windows XP Proffessional SP2. In order to do backups of these machines we need to create an image with Norton Ghost 2003. We have worked with Ghost during several years with different platforms (Red Hat, White Box Linux, Windows) without problems but now we are facing problems with our CentOS. When the creation of the image reaches approximately 50% in BOTH machines the Norton Ghost aborts with an error. Using the "force cloning" option of Ghost we managed to complete the creation of the image, nevertheless when recovering it we got this error: GRUB GRUB (the machine never booted) Then we tried to boot CentOS from a floppy and linux rescue and it didn't work. Two days ago we made and we recovered images to those same discs with White Box and WinXP without problems. Given our experience with Norton Ghost, we considered seriously that the problem is CentOS. We did many tests to have arrived at this consideration. Here are the details: Two exactly equal machines (the same hardware and resources), except by the hard disk 1. PC DELL Hard disk: Maxtor 20GB RAM: 512 MB Processor: Pentium 3, 866 MHz 2. PC DELL Hard disk: Seagate 20GB RAM: 512 MB Processor: Pentium 3, 866 MHz The disk partitions are: /hda1 windows xp 10 GB /hda2 /boot 100 MB /hda3 / 8900 MB /hda4 swap 1 GB We would like to know if someone has had the same problem (making an image with Norton Ghost 2003 to a dual boot system using Windows and CentOS.) greetings, trying to install netapplet (http://primates.ximian.com/~rml/netapplet/) from source on a centos 4 laptop. ./configure, make and make install all work fine, but when I then go to /etc/init.d to start netdaemon, it complains that it cannot find checkproc. I can't seem to even find anything on google for redhat or RHEL and checkproc or killproc. The closest I came was finding that killproc is in /etc/init.d/functions... but I'm not sure how to call it, when starting a daemon. thanks in advance. cameron

Cups updates - overwriting mime.* files

Every time cups is updated I have to check mime.convs and mime.types to ensure that references to handling raw file types are uncommented otherwise we notice that one of our printers stops working because the files are overwritten by the updates. Should config files not be left untouched? We do have 'print command = lpr -r -oraw -P %p %s' in smb.conf but this on its own didn't make the printer work. Do I just need to keep checking or is there a better way Oh, Centos 3.4, by the way! Thanks Nigel Kendrick

We have created a Centos 9500S Floppy Boot Disk for installing Centos on a 3ware 9500S series controller that will allow installing and booting directly from this controller. This boot disk supports only AMD XP, MP and Opterons in 32 bit mode Centos 3.4 for the up and smp versions. We can also do a x86_64 version if required. Any interest???? This problem also exhibits in RHEL3-U4, so CentOS 3.4 inherited it. CentOS 3.4 is treated as rhas3 by xcat. The first time you run 'nodeset <host> install' for a particular OS, the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch> tree gets populated with files, including install.gz, which is a compressed disk image which in turn contains all the kernel modules, including tg3. 1.) First thing you need to do is delete (or rename) the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch>/ directory. 2.) Next is to fix a minor bug in xcat's 'mkinstall' located in $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/. I posted the fix to the xcat user's list, and have included the hacked mkinstall as an attachment. Please note that this mkinstall is for 'x86', but it should be pretty straightforward to see how to make the change for x86_64 if that's your arch. << cut&paste'd from my post in the xcat user's list >> I went the second route and dug around inside $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/mkinstall. Jabberd and Centos 3.4

I am trying to setup a local Jabberd server for our members of our IT department to use. I downloaded the source for 2.0s8 from the jabbered site. When i run ./configure I receive the following error: "configure: error: Libidn >= 0.3.0 not found" I went out to dag and downloaded and installed the libidn-0.4.6-1.1.el3.dag rpm. When i ran ./configure again it failed again. After a little searching on Google I found the following article: http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/jadmin/2004-June/016435.html Following its advice I rand ./configure --with-extra-library-path=/usr/lib/libidn.so.11. However it still fails. Anyone have any ideas? I don't know anything about libidn, is 0.4.6 incompatible with versions needing 0.3.0? There are several ways of getting around that from simplest to hardest -- - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD' to /etc/rc.local - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD ${DEVICE}' to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post - research your card driver and add the appropriate arguments in /etc/modules.conf. I almost always opt for the first option. As has been previously noted, you must make sure that the switch, hub or router that you are connected to is also forced to the same speed and duplex. -- Marc

Just an update to this... I upgraded the firmware on the SCSI RAID controller to version 413O-A09 as found at this link: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s= bsd&SystemID=PWE_PNT_XEO_1750&os=LE30&osl=en&deviceid=2608&devlib=35&cat egory=35&releaseid=R85295 Since upgrading the firmware we have had no more kernel panic problems. vino question

The Vino package is installed on my CentOS 4 server, but I am unable to connect to it using vncviewer (vncviewer srvhost:0) from a client. However, I am not sure if it is "running" or how to "start" it if this is needed. The client machine in this case is running Ubuntu Hoary (gnome 2.10). The connection is just rejected. So, I am now wondering what else needs to be done to enable remote connects to succeed. I did configure the "remote desktop" settings on the server per discussion in the thread. I am on trusted network and have the firewall support turned off on both machines. I would just use the standard Xvnc and "vncviewer hostname:1", which does work, but when I login via vncviewer I am unable to do any root configuration via gnome. In other distros, I have not had this problem. I run my file server without a monitor, so I need full access to root settings from gnome just like I have when logged in non-root using a monitor and keyboard.
