There are several ways of getting around that from simplest to hardest -- - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD' to /etc/rc.local - Add '/sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD ${DEVICE}' to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post - research your card driver and add the appropriate arguments in /etc/modules.conf. I almost always opt for the first option. As has been previously noted, you must make sure that the switch, hub or router that you are connected to is also forced to the same speed and duplex. -- Marc

Just an update to this... I upgraded the firmware on the SCSI RAID controller to version 413O-A09 as found at this link: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s= bsd&SystemID=PWE_PNT_XEO_1750&os=LE30&osl=en&deviceid=2608&devlib=35&cat egory=35&releaseid=R85295 Since upgrading the firmware we have had no more kernel panic problems. vino question

The Vino package is installed on my CentOS 4 server, but I am unable to connect to it using vncviewer (vncviewer srvhost:0) from a client. However, I am not sure if it is "running" or how to "start" it if this is needed. The client machine in this case is running Ubuntu Hoary (gnome 2.10). The connection is just rejected. So, I am now wondering what else needs to be done to enable remote connects to succeed. I did configure the "remote desktop" settings on the server per discussion in the thread. I am on trusted network and have the firewall support turned off on both machines. I would just use the standard Xvnc and "vncviewer hostname:1", which does work, but when I login via vncviewer I am unable to do any root configuration via gnome. In other distros, I have not had this problem. I run my file server without a monitor, so I need full access to root settings from gnome just like I have when logged in non-root using a monitor and keyboard. Max FIFO buffer size - Log Reporting

Hi Everyone, I need to be able to create a summary report of all relevent syslog entries that is then emailed weekly. The idea I have for this is to pipe the syslog entries (logged from many hosts UNIX-Like and Windows) out to a a named pipe (say /var/log/logpipe) that is then read periodically by a perl script started from cron. The perl script then filters the log entries (probably using regular expressions) and takes the appopriate action based on the severity of the error (i.e. log to summary file, or immediately email admin). My main concern is that if a lot of entries get logged the FIFO buffer may overload therefore loosing entries. Does anyone know what the size of the FIFO buffer is (or how it can be configured) or maybe there is a better way to do something like what I'm trying. TIA Regards Lee W

sorry i figured this out after deleting the other parts of the thread. just run vino-preferences as the user who runs the main x display. it will have various options to enable and as soon as you do that you can get to hostname:0 via vnc. works quite well.

MIrrored drives won't boot after installation

I have a p4 motherboard with 2 ide interfaces, I connect 2 40 GB drives as hda and hdc, I install Centos 4 from a CDROM, and partition the drives as 2 x raid partition each plus a swap partition on hda, the make md0 and md1 to install /boot and / respectively. Install goes well, everything looks great, go to reboot from drives, and all I get is "grub" but no boot. I have tried this ten times, doesn't seem I can get around it. I have to configure this server so that the drives are mirrored. I have installed redhat 9 in this configuration without problems. What am I doing wrong? Chris Mason www.anguillaguide.com

Just curious. I've noticed with the 1.0.3 release (and almost every recent dot release) Firefox becomes unstable until you preserve your bookmarks and blow away the .mozilla/firefox directory. A 'simple' problem?

Here's one for you if you have the time: I very stupidly killed the wrong process on a server on a remote site on Friday and now I cannot ssh login to it! It's not a major problem as it's main functions are as a file and print sharer (samba) and to run postfix/mailscanner, and I can have someone on site reboot the server when they start work on Monday, but I was wondering whether I could 'get in' by other means to reboot it - so far I have tried the following without luck: Simultaneous login requests to 'reach' a listening login as I think I've only screwed up pts0 A VNC connection to a machine on site and then using telnet (nope, telnet disabled) A VNC connection to a machine on site and then a VNC connection to the server (VNC not running on this one). Any suggestions to issue a remote reboot - as I said, it's not a major issue as I can have the server rebooted by someone on site. Thanks Nigel Kendrick

rebuilding anaconda for centos 4.0

Hi all: I'm trying to rebuild the anaconda installer for Centos 4.0 (i386) to add some RPMs and do some other things, and I've run into a problem. I've done lots of anaconda rebuilds for Tao Linux 1.0, and I'm bringing those bits forward into Centos 4.0. The all-knowing web hasn't turned up anything useful. It looks like the PXE-loaded kernel unpacked and mounted the initrd OK, but then things went awry (quickly). Anyone seen this on a PXE boot of an anaconda build? <snip> RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem). bugs with large partitions

It is my personal experience that auto-negotiation does not result in optimum or even compatible speed/duplex settings often enough to be trustworthy. I've experienced this as recently as last week with brand new Cisco equipment and Dell computers running CentOS 3.4 (100/Full on one end, 100/Half on the other). I've seen the problem with Alteon and Foundry equipment recently as well. It may be part of the standard but as anyone who's been around a while knows, each vendor's interpretation of a standard can vary enough to be problematic. Second, as an administrator I want to do everything in my power to make sure the devices I manage are going to run smoothly. Why leave something as simple but as problematic as speed/duplex settings to chance or trust when it is a simple task to force it to be that which works best in the networking environment that the device lives in? For example, if auto-negotiation comes up with 100/half, 10/full or 10/half and every other local device is 100/full or vice-versa, the network is operating at less than peak efficiency and that can also result in odd problems. -- Marc

losing NFS connection

Hello there! Perhaps this is a little off-topic, but I notice this only on the Centos box. I'm running Centos 4 on an AMD64 which has the following entries in the fstab to connect to NFS shares on a Fedora3 box: 192.168.1.12:/home/angelo/ /home/angelo/NFS_share1 nfs rw,addr=192.168.1.12 0 0 192.168.1.12:/home/angelo/data /home/angelo/NFS_share2 nfs rw,addr=192.168.1.12 0 0 192.168.1.12:/home/angelo/data2 /home/angelo/NFS_share3 nfs rw,addr=192.168.1.12 0 0 I have opened ports 111 (TCP), 648 (TCP), 651 (TCP) and 2049 (TCP and UDP) in iptables on the FC3 box and I can connect to them, but after a while I seem to loose the connection to the shares. When I try to move into them while in a console I get the error: bash: cd: NFS_share1: Input/output error In Nautilus I don't even see the directories anymore and in /var/log/messages I get this error msgs: Apr 24 20:17:02 solaris kernel: RPC: garbage, exit EIO There are not entries in the /var/log/messages on the FC3 box. If I manually umount them and then mount them again, I can use them again for a while.... The exports file on the FC3 box looks like this: [root@imhotep etc]# more exports /home/angelo 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) /home/angelo/data 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) /home/angelo/data2 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) Anyone any idea what is wrong here? APM on SMP kernel

I'm Currently running Centos 3.4 on an old Dell PowerEdge with dual PIII-450 processors. I know from searching that 'APM is not SMP safe' and so when I choose to reboot the server someone has to hit the power button to power down and then restart it. Most of the Web-based info I have found on APM and SMP is dated 2000-2002 so can anyone update me on whether there is now any way round this to allow an unattended reboot? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

NFS insanity

Hi all, I've got some insanity with mounting an NFS share that before reloading my workstation afresh worked perfectly, but now refuses to mount. Actually there are two servers with shares mounted. (1) Mandrake 10.0 file server - two shares - mount perfectly (2) Fedora Core 3 - one share - can't mount to save my life! My workstation is CentOS 4. I reloaded it to get rid of the FC3 installation at the front of the main drive and recover some space on the second drive moving CentOS to the main drive. Everything else works wonderfully as advertised. The following is the only feedback I'm getting when attempting to mount the share from the FC3 server. (the shares on the file server mount perfectly) SERVER: Apr 24 09:43:41 mail rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from 192.168.0.252:921 for /var/www (/var/www) CLIENT: Mounting NFS filesystems: mount: 192.168.0.4:/var/www failed, reason given by server: Permission denied ^^^ happens when running the command "service netfs restart[start]" I've researched this exaustively on Google and have come up with nuttin. what makes no sense at all to me is that it worked perfectly before on my previous centos 4 installation and has only developed this behavior since reinstalling and upgrading KDE to KDE-3.4 although I can't see what was in there that might have affected netfs/nfs share mounting since the other two shares from the Mandrake server do work. different MAC address, ignoring

I think a recent update changed the behavior of ifup on systems where the drives were moved or cloned and at boot time have a different MAC address than the one found in the corresponding interface file under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts or /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/. Now the interface is ignored with an error message about having a different MAC address than expected. I frequently update remote machines by shipping configured swappable drives so this becomes an interesting problem. However, it seems to be intended behavior so instead of reporting it as a bug, I'd like to know the correct procedure to prepare a drive to run in an unknown target machine and where this might be documented. -- Les Mikesell les(a)futuresource.com

mii-tool and cbq in Centos 3.3

Has anyone had any issues using cbq while using mii-tool in Centos 3.3? Just setup a gateway server and cbq has no affect on bandwidth. mii-tool is being used to force one of the nics to 100 full duplex. TIA -Marco Garza

I suspect I need to edit the ~/.vnc "xstartup file, but what do I add to fix this. How do point releases work?

I'm new to RHEL-like distros. When, say, CentOS 4.1 is released, will it simply be CentOS 4.0 + released updates in new ISO images? Or is it more than just the updated packages integrated into the full distribution? Put another way, if my 4.0 installation is kept up to date with YUM, will I basically have a 4.1 installation? Centos EOL changes

Hi, has the end of life and yum update process changed for Centos? I want to stick with a release, but receive security updates to maintain stability on my critical servers. Last year I remember the plan being that if you picked 3.1, 3.3 or 3.4 you could stick with it and automatically receive yum updates without changing anything. Then when 3.4 came out the Centos readme said if you were on 3.3 you would automatically be updated to 3.4 through yum. That never happened and I remember reading some where here it would not. Which was fine by me since I assume that was due to sticking to the original plan. But now it seems I have a 3.3-1 server that all of sudden looks like it wants to update to 3.4. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Dovecot .99.11 build fails; libiconv

Well, it seems this just isn't my day. Using the source RPM from a centos mirror, I tried to rebuild (and, after that fails) build manually a dovecot RPM. I get several errors about automake's iconv macro, AM_ICONV, missing, and then the install fails while looking for libiconv. I tested by first trying to rebuild the RPM, and when that failed, building the RPM manually by installing in sources and building, and when THAT failed, by unpacking the tarball and manually ./configure and make. Thanks to some googling around, I found that libiconv is a GNU package that's available in source, but that should generally be satisfied in glibc according to postings on the redhat mailing list. However... well, it seems that it isn't. Either that, or it's settled by a specific version of glibc, which I don't have in my glibc-2.3.4-2 ... and yes, I do have -common, -devel, -headers, -kernheaders, etc. installed for i686. I do have iconv.h on my system, but dovecot is specifically looking for libiconv. Anyone seen this before? Thanks, Karl Katzke

We also have half a dozen x330s and although I don't have centos 4 on all of them I am confident that we have successfully installed centos 4 at least three times on this server. We are also using the dvi like breakout cable, and it attaches to an HP cat5 kvm. Graham

I've got a handful of IBM X330's at my colo and another couple at the office for testing purposes. Currently, they're running CentOS 3.4 and are very happy doing so. The 3.4 install was perfectly seamless. When I tried to upgrade one of my test machines to 4.0, the keyboard died once I got into the install every single time once I boot to anaconda from the CD. It dies as soon as the blue-background screen appears, and it dies no matter which selection I choose at isolinux. (I'm sure the system isn't locked because the keyboard is dead while the SCSI driver is loading, and the system keeps chugging along happily until it needs input.) The CD passes all of the tests I can apply to it, from checksum to media check, and has been used to install a half dozen machines both before or since. I also downloaded a new ISO from a different mirror and reburnt another one; it's most certainly the install package. The box itself runs 3.4 quite happily. Note that x330s use IBM's cable-chaining technology, which is great if you've got a tiny colo rack with a lot of servers in it like I do, since I don't have to have a KVM. So what changed in the install process? I went ahead with the yum update, now 'rpm -q centos-release' shows: centos-release-3.3-1 centos-release-3-4.2 I had walked away from a vnc session as it was yum updating and came back to a closed vnc sessions. So I thought maybe it did not finish. However a server reboot and a subsequent 'yum clean' and 'yum update' did not yield any new additions. Hi, I was getting security updates from yum centos mirrors regularly on the 3.3-1 servers and checked the Centos errata. So I assumed the default unchanged centos yum.conf was giving me everything I needed. Now it seems yum will jump me from 3.3-1 to 3.4. Does this all sound about right? (I figured after seeing this I must be doing something wrong or the process changed somewhere. I do not remember seeing an announcement other than the one back in January but later someone mentioned the automatic update to 3.4 would not happen). Module loading order during install

Is there a way in a kickstart install to affect the order in which modules get loaded? I want to load 3w-xxxx before 3w-9xxx so that my OS mirror drives take their proper place as sda and sdb, but centos-4 wants to load 3x-9xxx first, making my (unbootable) big arrays the first two drives. Research the 1/3GB (32-bit) v. 4/4GB (PAE36) addressing models for Intel PAE36. If the kernel is the former, you'll run into the limit you have. If the kernel is the latter, you won't, but you'll take a paging hit as PAE36 swaps in/out 512MB pages from above 4GB (yes, I know, you only have 1GB but it's complicated to explain :-). BTW, *all* Athlons, both 32-bit and 64-bit, are actually 40-bit EV6 (Alpha 264), and not 32-bit/PAE36 addressing. But the Athlon uses 32-bit/PAE36 paging for compatibility. If you have a mainboard with a BIOS that has a "Linux" option for memory/IO addressing (very rare), there is a way to use the Linux kernel to get a "flat" 64GB model, as well as get the 32-bit Athlon's AGPgart (which is in the CPU, not the chipset - at least on the MP) to act like an I/O MMU for "safe" >4GB I/O transfers. Not even Intel's EM64T offers that BTW, I have *never* done this personally with a 32-bit Athlon. I only read about the kernel hack and the few mainboard BIOSes that support it (which prevents Windows from booting when set). Understand the 32-bit and 64-bit AMD processors are the same core design (even 48-bit/PAE52, although much is not enabled/useful on the 32-bit), including the *physical* 40-bit/1TB addressing of EV6.
