RAID card recommendation

Hey all, After seeing the horrible lack of support for Promise cards in Redhat Enterprise/CentOS, I am looking for a recommendation for a good IDE RAID controller that is supported out of the box (i.e. I would prefer not to have to install via a driver disk). I would prefer ATA 133 over Serial ATA for now. Thanks! Sean

Hi, I installed CentOS 3.3 and kept the machine up2date. I installed poptop and the newest ppp-cvs version ( ppp-2.4.3-0.cvs_20040527.6) We are running a ssh + ppp tunnel for our internet tunnel/tunnel to our NOC. Just another note regarding SMP kernel. I've never had an issue, and am currently running dual XEON 2.4's. Well, I've had issue with kernel upgrades and the megaraid2 driver, but that seems to be a result of Dell's dkms enabled driver setup, rather than the kernel itself. Ben

Hi, I have updated the kernel to 2.4.21-27.0.2 on Centos 3.4 (was 3.3 when I did the kernel update) and have modified grub.conf to use the single CPU kernel: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. I work for a small company, and we're running CentOS on our servers. We are looking to possibly move our most critical servers to RHEL. We currently use apt to deploy software upgrades to our servers. I have a question about RHEL subscriptions that they don't seem to be able to answer for me. If you have an RHEL subscription, do you have access to manually download the RPMs? We would prefer to deploy upgrades using apt instead of up2date, for consistency, but we need to know whether we can even do that on RHEL. Thanks! Steve Meyers

The following error appeared and I'm wondering if it's important enough to file a bug report: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.8817: line 2: gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders: command not found error: %postun(librsvg2-2.2.3-2) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 Also /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-applet.rpmnew got created; the difference is that the uuid has changed from a hex key to "UNSPECIFIED". I don't recall where that hex key came from -- was it in a previous CentOS release, or could it have come from an RHN signup at some other time?

Hi all, The usual apologies if this has been answered; I didn't see the answer anywhere on the site or googleing the archives... Since CentOS is a RHEL rebuild (and this is brilliant!), does that imply that CentOS will continue to provide security patches and bug fixes so long as Red Hat continues to release them for a given version of RHEL? That's to say that Red Hat commits to 5 years of updates for any given version of RHEL. Will CentOS benefit for those same 5 years? I ask because Scientific Linux commits (or, plans) to support 3 years after a release. Thanks in advance! -Fred

Upgrading from 3.4 to 4.0 beta X

Please forgive me if I missed something, but I've searched all over in hopes of finding something documented on a procedure to upgrade a Centos 3.4 system to the beta. I've got the DVD burned and am testing the process on VMWare. All I could figure out how to do was install over the existing partition without formatting, but this was quasi-disastrous so I 'reverted' my VMWare drive to the prior state. Is there some way to reconfigure yum.conf, GPG keys, etc. so that it will pull down the changes? Or, is there a way to 'upgrade' the system using the CD as a source? Any help would be appreciated. I was hoping it was as simple as the upgrade from 3.3 to 3.4, but I couldn't find anything out there. Thanks, Mike

Hey, Lance mentioned yum group install. This yum group capability makes the "server" CD's more versatile than the name implies -- you only need a broadband connection to get any kind of CentOS install you want. Start with a minimal install off the CD, and then use the yum group install to conveniently get the same install you could get off the 3 CD set (only more up to date). It might be worth just using the Linux software RAID as this should work with no problems. I'm coming from FC3 and moving to CentOS 3.4. I have been using mod_auth_ldap for some time now with Apache 2.x and authenticating to my Microsoft ADS without problems, here's my article on how that worked: http://www.turnpike420.net/linux/Apache_ADS_AuthLDAP.txt However, I have come to find out that CentOS 3.4 only comes with mod_authz_ldap and when I did some reading on it, doesn't seem like it will work with M ADS at all. Does anyone have this card working in hardware RAID mode? I can see the individual ATA drivers when booting. The promise site has drivers for Redhat 7.3,8 and 9, but nothing for higher. I see the source code, and can build the module, but I need it loaded at boot time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Sean

For example runnig fetchmail from crontab can cause kernel panic, any user who can use cron is able to initiate system crash. Problem is in auditd which was added in U4 and is turned ON default, turn it OFF after install and you will get runnig systems. I havent try it with new kernel. Good luck. Hi all. Most of you already know about my problems (well, my computer's problems ;-) ), since we've been discussing on the forum. Digital IO card and /proc/devices

Hi all, I am having problems to get the SeaLevel IO card to work with CentOS distro. Basically the card is being recognised and shown by lspci BUT /proc/devices file is not updated with the new devices does anyone know why. ? Could someone tell me what/where infos are needed to get /proc/devices to be updated. The reason I require the /proc/devices infos is because I want to run a mknod command with those infos. clamav-milter verification on Centos 3.3

Hello! I'm running clamav-milter, clamd, and sendmail on CentOS 3.3 (RHEL3). I'm trying to verify that my milter works. I've sent test emails from testvirus.org but they don't appear to be getting flagged. I don't see anything in the logs to indicate they were. Is there a sure-fire way to know? Also, how should the clamd work? Does it watch the filesystem? Or will it only work on a scan? -- <<JAV>>

SuperServer 6024H-82R and Centos 3.3

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any familiarity with this server? It uses the Super X6DH8-G2 motherboard. Currently, we've added an Adaptec 2120S Ultra320 RAID PCI Controller Card to get RAID 5 capability. The installation bombs and from what I can tell it looks like we're getting SCSI resets or the controller is going offline maybe. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. -- <<JAV>>

i believe a server re-install is required....ive done that before, what you did and i had to re-install....yet there might be a way to salvage it but im not exactly sure the proper way

Hi All, I wonder if someone can help. My rpm db was corrupted. So I ran rm -f __db* followed rpm rebuild db which ran OK. But I keep getting the following error. error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm warning: kernel-source-2.4.21-20.0.1.EL.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 025e513b error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm -- Regards JC

The CentOS team is happy to announce the availability of CentOS-4.0 (Beta) for x86_64. This product supports AMD64 and Intel EM64T processors. Hi, I would like to try to switch from CentOS 3.4 => CentOS 4 beta. I hava a couple of questions: -is possible to upadte/upgrade my test box from 3.4 => 4 and what are the yum.conf settings/requirements? -is it easy to update your CentOS 4 beta => CentOS 4 when the stable version comes out?
