Mod_Throttle for Apache 2?

We have some custom software that is put out on our 6 clustered(balanced) webservers. Every 5 minutes that software checks into our server for a new version, if there is a new version it downloads it (20MB file). This happens about 2-3 times per month. Currently there are over 10000 clients that need to download the update. Up until this past week we were able to handle the load and this is putting a serious strain on our webservers. We were hoping to throttle the amount of traffic that each of the webservers would take and the bandwidth that each client consumes. Previously I've used Mod_Throttle for Apache 1.3 on other projects, but on our new servers they are running Apache 2. bind and 3.4

Hello, I encountered a problem when upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4 on i386. The machine is a production name server running bind. Looks like the new rpm moved my named.conf to .rpmsave and chkconfig'ed bind to off. That's really bad. A more gentle behavior would have been to save the new named.conf to .rpmnew and not mess with initscripts. Anyone else notice that? Francois Caen

The content may be useful in the Cenyos context as well to admin's looking to strip the size of an install to the bare bones. Comment welcomed. Here is a quick guide: During each install, a file called 'ks.cfg' is left by anaconda in /root/ At the end of this post, I include the ks.cfg file which will build a stripped host. I have done a couple test installs, and gone through the resulting packagelist using; rpm -qa --qf '%{size} %{name} \n' | sort -n | less to see what I could add with the '-' prefix at the bottom of the file. (I have left in there a couple 'conveneince packages' and I usually add one extravagance -- I prefer 'konsole' to pop back as a remote terminal and so pay its space penalty, but comment it out here) As I said, I 'went hunting' and trimmed it down to 465 M ; more savings are possible. The worst remaining mandatory 'size offenders' in the install are: glibc-common 42M perl 27M kernel 22M Not much more we can do there. But ... Once the install is done, turn off auditting: chkconfig audit off service audit stop and reclaim the LARGE (100M) amout of room these files eat up cd /var/log/audit.d/ rm -f * Unfortunately the package is not deletable as there are dependency issues. As I say. I then end up at: 465M Using a network install from a local mirror and a ks.cf file permits 'gameing' to see what changed in the ks.cfg result in a given size profile. Loosing keyboard

Hello. I am experiencing a problem with CentOS 3, it's that when I start Xwindow, my keyboard is lost and I can't do anything anymore. The Num Lock doesn't react nor the Caps lock. It's like if it would just be disabled. If I quit Xwindow, then my keyboard comes back again, working perfectly. Did anybody also have this problem ? I had a look elsewhere but didn't see anything helpful. My XF86Config file has a normal input section and I tried to change it without success. The current one: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard" EndSection Of course I also changed the physical keyboard. hi all, i tried to install postgrey for postfix and had to update postfix to version 2.1. i added the following to /etc/yum.conf [postfix-2.1-rhel3] name=Postfix Mail Server for RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 - $basearch baseurl=http://ftp.WL0.org/yum/postfix/2.1/rhel3/ after the update i have problems because the new version of postfix doesn´t support SASL. is there an postfix-tls rpm for CentOS 3? If not how can i remove postfix 2.1 and install the old version with TLS support? thank you very much for your help

PHP+Oracle problem

Hi! I have succesfully installed Oracle 9.2.0.4 on Centos. Everything is fine with it. Then I recompiled php-4.3.2-19.ent.src.rpm with rpmbuild --rebuild --define 'oracle 1' php-4.3.2-19.ent.src.rpm The compilation was successful, and I got the php and the php-oci8 rpms. Then I installed them both. After this one running the following PHP script: <?php $c = ocilogon("wonttell", "wonttell", "WONTTELL"); ocilogoff($c); ?> by issuing the command: php < oracle_test.php executed with segfault. The strace output is available at: http://www.telefor1.hu:7000/segfault.txt Strance, but when invoked the script from the web it runs flawlessly. Problem with SCSI controllers: Anaconda (and kernel option for grub/lilo)

Hi, I do seem to have a slight problem with upgrading two of our machines to CentOS (from SuSE, but that doesn't really matter). Both systems are IBM x-Series 360 with a ServeRaid controller for the "internal" hard disks an a QLogic QLA2200 fibre channel controller for an external stack of disks. On SuSE (kernel 2.4.26) the ServeRaid is controller 0 (resulting in the internal Raid Array being /dev/sda) and the QLogic controller is controller 1 (with the external disks being /dev/sdb). With CentOS (yes, I did an unattended kickstart install) the QLogic is recognized as the first controller, the ServeRaid as the second, so CentOS is installed on the external disks (which kills the database residing there). Is there any possibility (be it software or hardware if anyone knows the x360) to tell CentOS, that the ServeRaid controller has to be recognized as the first controller and the QLogic as the second? This goes for installation *and* operation later on, by way of a kernel command line or whatever. Hello, I try to install Centos 3 U4, to test if the bug is present as under Gralinux AS 3 (an other clone of Redhat AS 3) and yes ... this bug is there. When I try to install the Centos3U4, I choose French keyboard (azerty) , French language: no problem. But after, when want to enter the root passord, or edit the name of a partition with diskdruid the keyboard is still in US qwerty. Problem during install of 3.4

I am having a problem during install of centos 3.4 I am getting an error which says: "The partition table on device /dev/sdb is of unexpected type loop for your architecture. Do you want to reinitialize the drive?" Searching google i found: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=90635 Which was from a while ago and its currently in closed status with no resolution provided?? Does anyone have any more info about this? I currently have FC3 installed on this machine and /dev/sdb is indeed working just fine. sdb is a sata drive connected to a promise controller on my motherboard. sda is also connected to this controller and it gets detected just fine. Modprobe errors during startup on CentOS 3.4

Hi, I am getting loads of modprobe errors flying past on the screen during startup.. I never got these errors on any of the PC I installed 3.3 onto but now I have tried 3.4 on two seperate PC's and got these errors.. Anyoen else having this? Later..

Removal of CentOS 3.1 from mirrors

With the release of CentOS 3.4 the decision has been taken to remove CentOS 3.1 from the mirrors. This will save approximately 18 GB of space and make room for new architectures and CentOS 4.0 . CentOS 3.1 was superceded by CentOS 3.3 in September, and at that time a new centos-release rpm was pushed into the 3.1 tree to update users to 3.3 . The only people that wont be updated are those that may have hardcoded 3.1 into their yum.conf and for them we have been pushing updates back into the 3.1 tree. Now 3.1 is a symlink to 3.3 so that even if they have hardcoded yum.conf (dont !!) they will now get the 3.3 tree, which will make little difference as the updates were all in the 3.1 tree anyway. 3.1 was only released for i386. ok i checked the spec file and it has the path: Requires: /usr/sbin/groupdel Requires: /usr/sbin/groupmod Requires: /usr/sbin/sendmail <------- SENDMAIL mentioned here On my production server: I have the following: a symbolic link to the sendmail which qmail uses: sendmail -> /var/qmail/bin/sendmail I guess I could edit the SPEC file and remove the sendmail line, correct? or edit it in a way that it checks for either the symlink or the regular link for people who might be using qmail as there prefered mail system.

Ok so your saying to just remove the redhat-lsb rpm. But, am I suppose to have that rpm for some reason...i can eliminate more packages from my system if i do remove the redhat-lsb rpm. I just though it was a required back that shouldnt be removed from the system...

TIA ====my original posting to the list===== Greetings folks, env: 1. servers on OVPN 2.0 rc6 on FC3 and CentOS 3.3(clone of RHES 3.0 with updt3), with all latest updates..Clients are all XP SP2. using TUN on servers/clients.. 2. using in routed config, custom certs all generated on FC3 and copied/replicated on to centos box. 3. use diff ip/netwok for "server" (in server config file) directive for obvious reasons..both OVPN servers are serving the same corp/office network.. 4. using TCP instead of UDP. 5. same setof "iptables" firewall rulesets.. here is the strange thing.. OVPN on FC3 seems to work with out any issues, but the one on CentOS box does not respond, after in production for a while..I have to reboot for it to start responding..my verbose logs don't show anything..it's like, there is not even a connection being established..I have ruled out network issues etc.. external IP's on both hosts are valid and accessable, while OpenVPN on 443 port gets hung or doesn't respond on CentOS host...(i run it on TCP 443)... am getting a little tired of rebooting centos box. i guess I could cron the reboot, but I would like to find the root cause..anyone seen this issue? Heads up if anyone removes the caching-nameserver rpm after they fix their init scripts and replace their named.conf, it also renames your named.ca to named.ca.rpmsave( I believe this happens when you uninstall the caching-nameserver rpm, it also moves named.conf back to named.rpmsave again). So you have to move that back before you can successfully restart named. CentOS-3 i386 errata : caching-nameserver 3.4 update causes problems

I have removed the updated caching-nameserver from the core OS repo of CentOS 3.4 i386 as there have been reports of nameservers losing their configuration and stopping when the update was applied. I have reverted caching-nameserver in the 3.4 core OS back to the CentOS 3.3 version caching-nameserver-7.2-7.noarch.rpm. The new version caching-nameserver-7.3-3_EL3.noarch.rpm is now in the testing repo of 3.4. The new version is still in the .isos but it should be safe for new installs. Lance

Postfix dep for redhat-lsb rpm

Is it possible to eliminate the postfix dep that is required to update to the latest redhat-lsb rpm when upgrading to 3.4 can i just download the source and remove the postfix dep and rebuild, and update the redhat-lsb rpm on my system. i dont think that the post fix dep was there when i updated to 3.3 from 3.1

Im glancing through my email from the mailing list and noticed a lot of talk about centos3.4. When will it be released officially. I have read somewhere that RH is releasing RHEL 4 pretty soon....Im in no need to upgrade because my system is rather stable..just trying to get a idea of what is going on....I know i should be keeping up with the list...but it gets complicated at times. I know j. hughes is building a beta test of 3.4...Im just curious as to if if (cent3.4) is a quarterly update like going from 3.1 to 3.3 or is it a major release as will 3.4 be the same as RHEL4.

Change your default rpm query format on multi-lib archs (like x86_64)

All, I am now building rpms on, and using a multi-lib arch (x86_64) for the first time ... when using the standard command: rpm -qa | grep pkg_name The results might be pkg_name.i386 or pkg_name.x86_64 ... or both. But, the way it is shown by the default query format, looks the same ... like this: pkg_name pkg_name ---------------------------- example: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21 popt-1.9.1-21 ---------------------------- To fix this problem on multi-lib machines (and change the default query format), you can change your .rpmmacros (or create a .rpmmacros) in your user home directory and add this line: %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} --------------------------- Now the result of the above example is: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21.x86_64 popt-1.9.1-21.i386 --------------------------- So now you can easily tell which arch of a program is installed on multi-lib machines. Greatings, I am very sorry for having to misrebuild the vim update for x86_64 (CentOS-3.3): Wrong build host which was using a different libacl than the current CentOs-3.3... upon upgrading you might have got: ....Unable to satisfy dependencies Package vim-enhanced needs libacl.so.1(ACL_1.0)(64bit), this is not available. Package vim-minimal needs libacl.so.1(ACL_1.0)(64bit), this is not available. Open/Closed Ports

Hi, Just installed CentOS 3.3. I said to allow only http and ssh when I did the install. I can ssh to the machine and until I compiled apache 2 and installed it seperately I could connect to the default web server. I am running oracle on the box and have found that I can't connect remotely to oracle from another linux box (sql*net works fine on the CentOS box itself). I think it is because the port (oracle is on 1521) is blocked. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start? I've looked at hosts.deny/allow and they both contain no entries and I can't find anything in /etc that seems to be involved in the problem. Thanks, Wayne

Ok to update to 3.4

i get very little updates from yum, so i was wondering if it is ok to go ahead and update to 3.4, being im running 3.3.. i run a minimal system...minus a few packages removed after install. just didnt know about any possible security issues that would come down for 3.3 if i have updated to 3.4..how would or would i even need them....or will the upcoming security, bugs, etc.. be strictly for 3.4?...what im trying to say is would i miss any updates if i updated to 3.4, that are meant for 3.3?

Searching for suspicious files and dirs, it may take a while... /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/.packlist and further down.. Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 465) Anyone have any advice for getting rid of it?? Later..

an RPM conundrum

I have an interesting chicken-and-egg problem that I hope someone can help me out of. I have a machine on which I originally loaded White Box. I subsequenty converted to CentOS using the instructions found numerous times in the group -- e.g. get the redhat-package RPM (thus changing /etc/redhat-release), then configuring yum and then yum -y upgrade. Everything has been going fine... that is until I tried installing the rpm-build package. Now I'm getting the message: [root@intranet root]# yum install rpm-build Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: CentOS-3.3 - Addons Server: CentOS-3.3 - Base Server: CentOS-3.3 - Extras Server: CentOS-3.3 - Updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Resolving dependencies ....Unable to satisfy dependencies Package rpm-build needs rpm = 4.2.3-10, this is not available. Which I assume is caused by my version of rpm: rpm-4.2.3-10.WB1 I can't seem to figure out how to convert RPM packages and, of course, I can't simly rpm -e rpm and then use the erased package to install itself. I've tried a simple yum --download-only ... but the dependency check still occurs. Any thoughts on what to try next? TIA, Barry

problem building the isos?

Hello all, I am making my own distribution based on RHEL AS 3U4 (with additional rpms, like urpmi, webmin, nessus, Maildir format by default for Postfix, courier-IMAP etc.) and I would like to have information from the CentOS team. I am generating the isos of this distribution but during the launching of anaconda, the graphic interface failed to work, so the installation in text mode is the only one possible. I think i find the problem: pam. by using pam-0.75-51, all is ok (graphical install of anaconda) but with more recent versions, anaconda refuses to launch the graphical install. From this point forward $releasever will stay at 3. When 3.5 is released systems will automatically get updated. To prevent this you will need to hard code 3.4 in yum.conf in place of $releasever. CENTOSPLUS ---------- The new CentOSplus repo is designed to allow us to provide extended functionality to CentOS without compromising compatibility with Redhat Enterprise Linux. Packages that will live in CentOSplus - such as MySQL-4 - would update packages in the base distro, so it is only recommended that you enable CentOSplus in yum.conf when you are sure that is what you want. The difference between CentOSplus and 'extras' is that 'extras' are additional packages that are not already installed, so would not update existing packages beyond Rhel-3 , but provide extra functionality. It is hoped that there will be a wide range of CentOSplus packages provided in the future. RELEASE NOTES & CAVEATS ----------------------- -- YUM -- Your yum.conf should not get overwritten by the upgrade, but the new version may get written as yum.conf.rpmnew If your /etc/yum.conf file is a symlink to centos-yum.conf and you have manually edited centos-yum.conf, your centos-yum.conf file will be replaced by a new centos-yum.conf from the centos-yumconf rpm file in CentOS 3.4. Your existing centos-yum.conf file will be saved as yum.conf-SAVE. The following changes have been made tp the default centos-yum.conf :- Reference to the CentOSplus repository has been added (see below) but is not activated. The download path has changed from /centos-3/$releasever to /centos/$releasever to allow for update to CentOS-4 and later versions without having to change the configuration file. If you have edited yum.conf then neither of these changes will prevent it working but you would be advised to make them to avoid future problems. -- CENTOS-RELEASE RPM -- In order to accomodate compatibility with Dag's and other 3rd party repositories, the naming convention of centos-release has been changed. The version is now 3 (rather than 3.3) and will remain fixed $releasever used by yum) for the life of CentOS 3. The first number of the release will now carry the designation of the edition. For example, CentOS 3.4 ships with centos-release-3-4.2. The version is 3 and the release is 4.2. Compare this with the centos-release from the prior version: centos-release-3.3-1. yum detected $releasever as 3.3. Dag's excellent repository of Enterprise Linux RPMS. can be found at http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/ -- RPM -- Due to an upstream bug that causes RPM to fail and requires manual elimination of the RPM database, CentOS 3.4 ships with the RPM used in CentOS 3.3. When the upstream providor releases a patched RPM the CentOS team will follow suit. CentOS 3.4 ships with rpm-4.2.3-10 as did CentOS 3.3 rather than rpm-4.3.3-13 provided with rhel3 U4. (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=143532) -- MAILMAN -- CentOS 3.4 now ships with mailman as released by RedHat with quarterly Update 4 (U4). However the CentOS 3.4 verion is NOT compatible with the version available via CentOS 3.3 Extras. Since you can't read the Mailman upgrade documentation, we have made the upgrade notes available on the CentOS website. Read them here http://www.centos.org/mailman Databases will need to be manually updated per the instructions above. If want to avoid upgrading Mailman at this time, then temporarily exclude mailman from updates in your yum.conf until you are happy with the upgrade. 3.3 -> 3.4 transition

maybe some of the 3.4 beta discussion has covered this, i wasn't watching it too closely. what is going to be the process to convert a system from 3.3 to 3.4? will a simple yum update work? or do we have to do something more intentional to make it happen? how does redhat handle u3->u4 updates? i assume that since u4 has been published that security patches from rh will only apply to u4? or do they also supply security patches for u3 for some period of time?

The CentOS team has released the first RC (release candidate) for CentOS 3.4 ia64. This product supports Intel Itanium2 processors.
