Postfix dep for redhat-lsb rpm

Is it possible to eliminate the postfix dep that is required to update to the latest redhat-lsb rpm when upgrading to 3.4 can i just download the source and remove the postfix dep and rebuild, and update the redhat-lsb rpm on my system. i dont think that the post fix dep was there when i updated to 3.3 from 3.1

Im glancing through my email from the mailing list and noticed a lot of talk about centos3.4. When will it be released officially. I have read somewhere that RH is releasing RHEL 4 pretty soon....Im in no need to upgrade because my system is rather stable..just trying to get a idea of what is going on....I know i should be keeping up with the list...but it gets complicated at times. I know j. hughes is building a beta test of 3.4...Im just curious as to if if (cent3.4) is a quarterly update like going from 3.1 to 3.3 or is it a major release as will 3.4 be the same as RHEL4.

Change your default rpm query format on multi-lib archs (like x86_64)

All, I am now building rpms on, and using a multi-lib arch (x86_64) for the first time ... when using the standard command: rpm -qa | grep pkg_name The results might be pkg_name.i386 or pkg_name.x86_64 ... or both. But, the way it is shown by the default query format, looks the same ... like this: pkg_name pkg_name ---------------------------- example: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21 popt-1.9.1-21 ---------------------------- To fix this problem on multi-lib machines (and change the default query format), you can change your .rpmmacros (or create a .rpmmacros) in your user home directory and add this line: %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} --------------------------- Now the result of the above example is: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21.x86_64 popt-1.9.1-21.i386 --------------------------- So now you can easily tell which arch of a program is installed on multi-lib machines. Greatings, I am very sorry for having to misrebuild the vim update for x86_64 (CentOS-3.3): Wrong build host which was using a different libacl than the current CentOs-3.3... upon upgrading you might have got: ....Unable to satisfy dependencies Package vim-enhanced needs libacl.so.1(ACL_1.0)(64bit), this is not available. Package vim-minimal needs libacl.so.1(ACL_1.0)(64bit), this is not available. Open/Closed Ports

Hi, Just installed CentOS 3.3. I said to allow only http and ssh when I did the install. I can ssh to the machine and until I compiled apache 2 and installed it seperately I could connect to the default web server. I am running oracle on the box and have found that I can't connect remotely to oracle from another linux box (sql*net works fine on the CentOS box itself). I think it is because the port (oracle is on 1521) is blocked. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start? I've looked at hosts.deny/allow and they both contain no entries and I can't find anything in /etc that seems to be involved in the problem. Thanks, Wayne

Ok to update to 3.4

i get very little updates from yum, so i was wondering if it is ok to go ahead and update to 3.4, being im running 3.3.. i run a minimal system...minus a few packages removed after install. just didnt know about any possible security issues that would come down for 3.3 if i have updated to 3.4..how would or would i even need them....or will the upcoming security, bugs, etc.. be strictly for 3.4?...what im trying to say is would i miss any updates if i updated to 3.4, that are meant for 3.3?

I have just run chkrootkit on my server and have the following two suspicious entries.. Searching for suspicious files and dirs, it may take a while... /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/.packlist and further down.. Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 465) Anyone have any advice for getting rid of it?? Later..

an RPM conundrum

I have an interesting chicken-and-egg problem that I hope someone can help me out of. I have a machine on which I originally loaded White Box. I subsequenty converted to CentOS using the instructions found numerous times in the group -- e.g. get the redhat-package RPM (thus changing /etc/redhat-release), then configuring yum and then yum -y upgrade. Everything has been going fine... that is until I tried installing the rpm-build package. Now I'm getting the message: [root@intranet root]# yum install rpm-build Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: CentOS-3.3 - Addons Server: CentOS-3.3 - Base Server: CentOS-3.3 - Extras Server: CentOS-3.3 - Updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Resolving dependencies ....Unable to satisfy dependencies Package rpm-build needs rpm = 4.2.3-10, this is not available. Which I assume is caused by my version of rpm: rpm-4.2.3-10.WB1 I can't seem to figure out how to convert RPM packages and, of course, I can't simly rpm -e rpm and then use the erased package to install itself. I've tried a simple yum --download-only ... but the dependency check still occurs. Any thoughts on what to try next? TIA, Barry

problem building the isos?

Hello all, I am making my own distribution based on RHEL AS 3U4 (with additional rpms, like urpmi, webmin, nessus, Maildir format by default for Postfix, courier-IMAP etc.) and I would like to have information from the CentOS team. I am generating the isos of this distribution but during the launching of anaconda, the graphic interface failed to work, so the installation in text mode is the only one possible. I think i find the problem: pam. by using pam-0.75-51, all is ok (graphical install of anaconda) but with more recent versions, anaconda refuses to launch the graphical install. New ISO images are available as well as an installable DVD edition with source. In addition this release is available via BitTorrent. If you do NOT want to upgrade then exclude centos-release from updates in your yum.conf. We will try to maintain security updates for CentOS 3.3 for as long as there are no issues that mean they cant be used (eg 3.4 specific dependency issue) -- but as soon as that happens we will have to close the CentOS 3.3 tree. From this point forward $releasever will stay at 3. When 3.5 is released systems will automatically get updated. To prevent this you will need to hard code 3.4 in yum.conf in place of $releasever. To manually upgrade to CentOS-3.4 (now) --------------------------------------- first rpm -ivh http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.4/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/centos-yumcache-3.1… (to avoid the header downloads) (Note: If you had poreviously upgraded from CentOS 3.1 then you will already have a cento s-yumcache rpm installed and rpm will complain , in which case use rpm -Fvh) rpm -Fvh http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.4/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/centos-release-3-4.… (to get the new releasever) then yum update To automatically upgrade to CentOS 3.4 (from 72-96 hours time) ------------------------------------------------------ We recommend that you install centos-yumcache before updating as it will save all the header downloading. yum install centos-yumcache yum update centos-release yum update Otherwise yum will take two update cycles to perform the update, the first will update centos-release and the second will download all the headers and then update all the packages. CENTOSPLUS ---------- The new CentOSplus repo is designed to allow us to provide extended functionality to CentOS without compromising compatibility with Redhat Enterprise Linux. Packages that will live in CentOSplus - such as MySQL-4 - would update packages in the base distro, so it is only recommended that you enable CentOSplus in yum.conf when you are sure that is what you want. The difference between CentOSplus and 'extras' is that 'extras' are additional packages that are not already installed, so would not update existing packages beyond Rhel-3 , but provide extra functionality. It is hoped that there will be a wide range of CentOSplus packages provided in the future. RELEASE NOTES & CAVEATS ----------------------- -- YUM -- Your yum.conf should not get overwritten by the upgrade, but the new version may get written as yum.conf.rpmnew If your /etc/yum.conf file is a symlink to centos-yum.conf and you have manually edited centos-yum.conf, your centos-yum.conf file will be replaced by a new centos-yum.conf from the centos-yumconf rpm file in CentOS 3.4. Your existing centos-yum.conf file will be saved as yum.conf-SAVE. The following changes have been made tp the default centos-yum.conf :- Reference to the CentOSplus repository has been added (see below) but is not activated. The download path has changed from /centos-3/$releasever to /centos/$releasever to allow for update to CentOS-4 and later versions without having to change the configuration file. If you have edited yum.conf then neither of these changes will prevent it working but you would be advised to make them to avoid future problems. -- CENTOS-RELEASE RPM -- In order to accomodate compatibility with Dag's and other 3rd party repositories, the naming convention of centos-release has been changed. The version is now 3 (rather than 3.3) and will remain fixed $releasever used by yum) for the life of CentOS 3. The first number of the release will now carry the designation of the edition. For example, CentOS 3.4 ships with centos-release-3-4.2. The version is 3 and the release is 4.2. Compare this with the centos-release from the prior version: centos-release-3.3-1. yum detected $releasever as 3.3. Dag's excellent repository of Enterprise Linux RPMS. can be found at http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/ -- RPM -- Due to an upstream bug that causes RPM to fail and requires manual elimination of the RPM database, CentOS 3.4 ships with the RPM used in CentOS 3.3. When the upstream providor releases a patched RPM the CentOS team will follow suit. CentOS 3.4 ships with rpm-4.2.3-10 as did CentOS 3.3 rather than rpm-4.3.3-13 provided with rhel3 U4. However the CentOS 3.4 verion is NOT compatible with the version available via CentOS 3.3 Extras. Since you can't read the Mailman upgrade documentation, we have made the upgrade notes available on the CentOS website. Read them here http://www.centos.org/mailman Databases will need to be manually updated per the instructions above. If want to avoid upgrading Mailman at this time, then temporarily exclude mailman from updates in your yum.conf until you are happy with the upgrade. maybe some of the 3.4 beta discussion has covered this, i wasn't watching it too closely. what is going to be the process to convert a system from 3.3 to 3.4? will a simple yum update work? or do we have to do something more intentional to make it happen? how does redhat handle u3->u4 updates? i assume that since u4 has been published that security patches from rh will only apply to u4? or do they also supply security patches for u3 for some period of time?

Hey all, I am looking to get some input regarding inexpensive dedicated servers -- preferably with a hosting company the offers CentOS as an OS option. Does anybody have any input or recommendations? HP switch and e1000 install

There appears to be an issue with installation over an HP switch. Upon bootup, the network driver resets twice which somehow never allows the client to ask and therefore receive it's MAC address. This follows the RH bug : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110036 Installation via a directly attached cable to the head node works fine. I have emailed the Beowulf list in hopes that the problem was in some configuration of the switch but have recently come across this bug report and it appears that the symptoms are the same. Are there any plans to roll these patches into CentOS 3.3 (x86_64) in the near future? Thanks, Bill

I guess the subject says it all.. :) I am still new to Centos so I am not sure on the upgrade path and what is the best way to stay up to date.. Will updates for 3.3 still be added to the yum repo or do I need to upgrade/update my system to 3.4? Thanks

2.6 kernel on CentOS-3.3

Hi I am happy to share a "proof of concept" for a centos-3.3 (not yet 3.4 ready) x86 and x86_64 distributions running either 2.4 and 2.6 linux kernels. This is not an official statement of the CentOS team! <include std disclaimer> don't complain if this howto eats your machine ;) It works for me and the src.rpm are provided. </include> <blurb> In order to have a 2.6 kernel on CentOS-3, one need to upgrade a few packages: at least module-init-tools, sysstat, initscripts... But in order to keep a 2.4 kernel happy, you must keep modutils around. I have repacked both modutils AND module-init-tools in the same package and it is providing both. mkinitrd needs to copy both insmod(module-init-tools) and insmod.old (modutils) into your initrd, since you can use either 2.4 or 2.6 kernel. the initscripts_26 is trying to get the initialisation for both series (there is much room for improvememt). A prebuild linux 2.6.10-ac8 kernel is there too, but you don't need it, since you can compile your own. There is an update to initscripts for CentOS 3.4. The version packaged in the 3.4 isos missed the patch to remove the 10 second delay on boot with an 'unsupported configuration' . This update reimplements the patch. CentOS and SuperMicro P8SCi motherboard

There was recently a thread on this mailing list regarding SuperMicro hardware and CentOS. The vendor's specifications page mentions Linux but I would rather hear from end users and their experiences. Even if there isn't, it wouldn't be hard to 'inject' the mail list posts into the database for the forums, just use the subject as the topic, give it it's own subforum. I see that a number of questions are being answered on the new web forum that is now part of the centos site. And the mailing lists So now there are two places to search, both the forum and the mailing list archives. This is just doubles the work required to follow along or find a solution. I know NNTP isn't sexy, it doesn't allow graphics in posts, it doesn't have person ratings or cute smileys, and it requires a modicum of competence to use, but it DOES do all of these: . Allows off-line reading and replying, with an appropriate reader. . Searching. . Reliable way of showing you which threads have new posts. -> I have not yet found a single web forum that did this well. . Orders of magnitude faster. . Easy to archive. . Small footprint, on-disk and over-network. . Synchronisation to multiple servers, reduced network use. . Bidirectional synchronisation to a mailing list. . New 3ware 9500 Boot Disk Images for CentOS

We have just posted new 3ware 9500 install boot driver disks based on the new 3ware 9.1.5.2 drivers. This install disk will ONLY work with Athlon and Opteron based systems running 32 bit CentOS 3.3 These images also contain built-in firmware upgrades for the 3ware 9500 SATA Raid controllers and provide increased RAID 5 performance. Also added to the download page is a version of 3DM2 disk management software for the 9500 series with a modified install script to allow automatic startup at boot time. This 3DM2 download is specific to CentOS but is architecture independent and should work with all installs. Thanks for the bandwidth. I also think that things like BOLD letters and links like: [url=xxxxx]Text[/url] Where xxxxx is a 200 character string, are much more convenient in a forum. BUT ... I realize that there is no right answer, much like the vi / emacs argument, the GNOME / KDE argument, and the evolution / mutt argument. However, I think offering both is what a community based distro, with users in mind should do. Need a proper configuration of smartd monitoring.

Hi, I have a software mirror with 2 IDE disks - hda and hdc. I would like to be able to monitor their health using smartd, and I am running /etc/init.d/smartd as a service. I placed the folloing in the /etc/smartd.conf /dev/hda -H -m root /dev/hdc -H -m root I case of a problem I want to be notified by mail, and a message to be logged to the system log. Just want to know if this confugiration is adequate for proper monitoring with smartd, or I should add some other options in the conf file? Kind regards. A. Georgiev.

I wouldn't normally hurry you guys about a package release, (because you're doing an excellent job), but any eta on the above? samba-3.0.9-1.3E.1 is in the current repos and that install seriously fubar'd my ADS + winbind setup. samba-3.0.9-1.3E.2 (which requires krb5-libs-1.2.7-31) fixes the problem. NB, samba-3.0.7-1.3E.1 (the old version) was fine for me, its only this intermediate version that's hosed. Thanks for you on going efforts, -- Tom Seeley

kernel compile and console mouse

Hello everyone, I had to recompile my kernel to enable NTFS support. I used as base the i686 kernel config and enabled the read-only NTFS module. After booting my custom kernel it all works fin (it reads the NTFS partition :-) ) but the console mouse (its a text only pc) wont work. Restarting the gpm service makes the poiter show but wont respond to mouse moves or clicks and will vanish at the first keystroke. Rebooting with the original kernel brings it back to life. What did I miss? Any help aprecuated, Best wishes, J.

Hey, Some time ago (two weeks maybe), I put a message in the CentOS web page "Contact Us" form, in part to see what would happen. Today I got an answer from Donavan. It is good that I finally got an answer. (I am not blaming Donavan; answering off the wall posts to a "Contact Us" form is not my idea of a good time, either.) Squirrelmail terminating web server connection..

Hi, I searched around but didn't see anyone else having this problem.. I have a newly installed server running CentOS 3.3 and using the provided RPM for Squirrelmail (ver 1.4.3a-7.EL3.centos.1).. When I try to send an email I get the following error.. "The connection to www.mydomain.com:80 has terminated unexpectedly. Some data may have been transferred" I am using a Firefox browser so the error may be worded differently in IE.. Anyone have a fix for this or any idea whats causing it?

Anyone else experience any difficulty with the install routine recognizing disk 3? I'm trying to install 4-beta under vmware and have had the same problem with either mounting the ISO or burning to disk. I can mount and read no problem from my parent linux installation but the install routine under vmware is complaining that it's the wrong disk. (no other install problems under vmware until disk 3 is asked for). If no one else is experiencing any issues, then I can blame vmware and go from there. I've downloaded 2 copies of ISO disk3, exact same file size and same issue. 2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp & megaraid2 problem

I've found a problem with CentOS 3 latest kernel (2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp) and megaraid2 driver. Hardware: Dell PE1600SC with CERC ATA100 RAID controller The problem is somewhat similar, but not identical as: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=123289 After updating new glibc and kernel packages the new kernel don't boot. Boot fails to mount root fs with "Cannot open root device" message. I doublechecked that /etc/modules.conf is refering to megaraid2 as it should and then recreated initrd manually, no help. Older kernel version (2.4.21-20.0.1.ELsmp) boots just fine. As RHEL3 U4 release notes states: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/release-notes/a… The megaraid2 driver has been updated from v2.10.6 to 2.10.8.2-RH1 The new driver is scsi/megaraid2.o The older driver has been preserved as addon/megaraid_2106/megaraid_2106.o So I decided to try megaraid_2106, changed modules.conf, recreated initrd and... server booted with the new kernel! Could there be a problem with the latest megaraid2 driver (2.10.8.2-RH1)? Since I'm using CentOS and not RHEL, how/where I could report this problem? Best regards, ++Toni

Is there anyway to remove CUPS and NFS on the system, I'd like to stop these services, close the ports, and uninstall the software as I don't use NFS for anything on my system, and for sure don't use printing on the server. Problems migrating from WBEL

Hi folks: I've recently migrated one of my production servers (bad Jason!) from WBEL to CentOS 3.3 using Donavan's instructions in the FAQ (http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19) While it was as painless as the document suggests, I've run into problems with postgrey (a postfix greylisting daemon) on my server. Whenever I try to start postgrey, I get the following error (trimmed from maillog): ERROR: can't create DB environment: No such file or directory A little research led me to find the error was caused by a call to BerkeleyDB::Env->new() in postgrey. I can recreate it in a simple Perl one-liner: perl -e 'use BerkeleyDB; my $db = BerkeleyDB::Env->new() or die "blah";' This leads me to believe that something is wrong with db4, so I upgraded (--force) to the CentOS db4 package. Unfortunately, this had no effect. Speaking with Dag in IRC a couple nights back, he believes my only recourse may be to "pin" my apt sources and attempt to upgrade all of my WBEL-based packages to their CentOS counterparts. I would really like to avoid this; if necessary, I think I'd prefer to try and upgrade from the 3.3 ISO. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this? process crashing issue

I have an hlds server on a CentOS 3.3 box with all the latest updates. it is a p-4 1.4 ghz with 384 megs of pc-800 and no less than 250 megs free at all times. Hlds has been crashing on me since the latest updates. I am thinking it is hlds acting a fool but i wanted to post here as well just to make sure.
