Best RH/FC version for dvd rip?

Greetings: I'd like to bring up a CentOS-3.3 system to use for multi-media purposes. One of the packages I'm installing is dvdrip and all it's dependant packages (libdv, libdvdcss, libdvdread, avifile, & transcode). I'm hunting down the packages on freshrpms.net and I notice that there are packages available for FC1, FC2 & FC3. Question: Which FC version should I use for CentOS-3.3? Thanks, Michael

kernel panic on upgrade

Hello, I'm having some troubles with upgrades. I've followed the instructions from Owl River on moving from Redhat 8 to Redhat 9 and then to Centos. http://www.owlriver.com/projects/yum/rhl8-to-rhl9/ http://www.owlriver.com/tips/centos-31-ex-rhl-9/ The 8 to 9 works well on all machines, and the 9 to Centos went well for a laptop. The 9 to Centos fails with a kernel panic on two machines. This is right after the first part of the upgrade, upgrading rpm, kernel and kernel-smp. EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock mount: error 22 mounting ext3 I believe these are the lines from the machine(s). Both troubled servers are dual pentium II 450's with adaptec 19160 scsi cards, running a software raid 1 and booting from sda1 _not_ the mirror with grub. I have been able to boot back into the Redhat 9 kernel with no troubles. These are production boxes, so I'm a bit hesitant to do anything drastic, hence the email to the list. update killed my x

X server, that is (as opposed to my ex-spouse...) Anyway, I was loving life with my rebuilt 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0custom041130a kernel, and then ran "yum update", which gave me a grub line for 2.4.21-20.0.1EL, but the 21-20 not only won't work with the old X settings, I can't get it to set up X at all. I tried running "yum update" from a console on this kernel, but yum can't find the conf file unless I tell it where it is with the -c switch, and even then it won't follow the symlink from /etc/yum.conf to /etc/centos-yum.conf. Once I supply the proper switch and path then it starts the update and chokes on the GPG keys for php-mysql. As directed in the error message I've tried running yum clean and also tried removing the /var/.../php-mysql... file indicated, to no avail. RAID Card for CentOS 3 compatibility

Hi everybody, I need to setup a couple of new servers with RAID 1 & another with RAID 5, witch card will have built in support (no need for drivers). It can be for ATA or SATA drives (any preference on ATA or SATA ?). I'm looking for a PCI card , or a motherboard with built in card. I been looking at the : 1. "3ware 64-bit PCI to SATA RAID Controller Card, Model "Escalade 8006-2LP", can I plug this card in on a 32 bits PCI slot or it need to be a 64 bit one. 2. 3Ware 7006-2 2 Port ATA RAID 3. Also I came across this one (less pricy than the 3ware ) LSI PCI to ATA RAID Controller Card, Model "MegaRAID ATA 133-2" Finally I got a Tyan server that has a built in Raid card, (RAID bus controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20276) and the drivers are for the RH 7,8. So when I run the drivers it tells me that is not compatible. Any recommendation on how to make it work ? It seems that some of the lovely pam libraries crashes. I turned out that the problem is that I had manualy edited /etc/pam.d/system-auth=20 to include ldap pam module. The moment I used the relevant red hat tool - authconfig to add support fot ldap passwords, my problems disappeared. I noticed that system-auth file created by the redhat tool is more complex by my previous variant which I took from a similar debian box. i think this is a hlds issue but i am not sure. I ahve file timestamps on my server that are an hour ahead of me..i am in the eastern timezone. when i look at hte system clock though it is on time. GRUB bootloader

I have raid'd a copy of my system for backup purposes to another hard drive, not deleting the MBR. When I boot with GRUB (Centos 3.3) it now lists multiple instances to boot, but in fact there is only one complete system. Is there a way to delete additional instances from the GRUB bootup screen? AMD K6 and CentOS 3.3

I've downloaded CentOS, baked CDs and start installing it on one old 450MHz AMD K6 based box with 392MB of RAM. To my regret, CentOS refused to load (to be installed). The message on the screen was something along this line: "Your architecture is not supported" I am sure that this is NOT CentoOS fault. It seems to me that RH does NOT support K6 CPU. Is my statement (conclusion) true ? Igor

local yum repository

bit off topic, but.... I've set up my first Centos gateway server and now setting up another server on internal network. I thought it would be nice to use the gateway servers "/var/cache/yum" as a local repository for any internal servers since it would be up to date with the lastest packages and save bandwidth. So... I created a sym link to create a repository through gateways http server, ie. ln -s /var/cache/yum /var/www/html/yum Now internally I can browse the gateways repository with no problem http://192.168.1.1/yum/addons I've set the internal servers yum.conf to, ie. [addons] name=Local - Addons baseurl=http://192.168.1.1/yum/addons/ gpgcheck=0 result.... yum list addons Gathering header info Server: Local - Addons CacheDir: /var/cache/yum/addons Getting header info from server failover: baseURL = http://192.168.1.1/yum/addons/ failover: path = headers/header.info and the just gets stuck there. structure of gateways repostitory... addons/headers/ addons/packages/ addons/header.info ok,so seems yums looking for in the headers dir for the header.info when really in the addons dir. Tried creating s symlink in the headers dir ( ln -s ../header.info header.info) but no go. Any tips, I'm sure I'm missing something simple? or maybe just can't do it how I want to.

Yeah, that's how mine worked too, only it used version comparison to handle the case where multiple new updates for the same package appeared simultaneously (which can happen if the script doesn't run frequently enough or a quickie-fix is required. Hi Folks, I've just done my first two Centos installs, having moved over from WB..er..never mind. I seem to be stuck with mysql - it's not installing; well, on one system it starts but there's no /var/lib/mysql folder or socket file and on the other, mysql just doesn't seem to be there at all. I have done a 'yum remove mysql' and then a 'yum install mysql' on the first system and it's not helped! Can anyone point me in the right direction to put this right. Thanks. NK

perl dependency problems in dag's repo

Hi I know this might not be the right list. There are some dependency problems with perl packages in dag's repo. This is not the first perl package which doesn't install because of this kind of dependency. Any idea? Resolving dependencies .....Unable to satisfy dependencies Package ldap-account-manager needs perl(Net::SSH::Perl), this is not available. Package ldap-account-manager needs perl(Quota), this is not available. Thanks Sophana
