Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. I plan to highlight the differences between RHEL and CentOS 3.1. Making this information clearly available without the need for duplicated effort across the world. This will help others take CentOS in different directions benefiting us all. It will help individuals create new projects more easily and efficiently. Are the diff files readily available, can I download them from anywhere? If the diff files were made available with each update, the community would understand more, less questions and confusion would occur. More scrutiny would result in a better product for us all. RHEL takes open source software and closes it. CentOS takes this closed software and reopens it. By making the changes open to public inspection, CentOS would become 100% open source. I have no wish to waste months of effort duplicating your work, even if I write scripts to automate the task. I can host the files on a server if you have no wish to do so at caosity. Kernel packages and 3rd party kernel modules

Hi, I'd like to come back to this topic. We've discussed this before on IRC but there's still no acceptable solution implemented. 3rd party kernel-modules are build against the official Red Hat kernels, to make them work with the TaoLinux/CentOS kernels there are specific requirements: + kernel RPM package should provide the same version/release + kernel version/release should be the same for o /lib/modules/kernel-version-release o /boot/vmlinuz-version-release This means there's not much room for customization if you want 3rd party modules to work. You can have a different version in the RPM as long as the Red Hat version/release is also provided by the package and the kernel-files/directories have the exact version/release. To give you a better understanding of the pitfalls: | Installing a kernel-module, beware that I already do not require an | exact version for the kernel RPM package, because that has other | problems. Still I need to make sure I have an exact kernel and that's | why we use the vmlinuz file. can't find SDL_mixer

Hello all, I just installed SDL_mixer-1.2.4-9.rpm and I can see all the files in /usr/lib. I can also see them listed in ld.so.conf but when I run a .configure in supertux I get an error checking for Mix_OpenAudio in -lSDL_mixer... no configure: error: SDL_mixer library required what am I doing wrong. Well, I figured it out all. The problem was the AGP driver, Not the Nvidia driver. When I set the Option "NvAGP" "1" it works fine. By setting this option to 1, it tells the kernel to load the agp module made by nvidia not the Generic Linux kernel which is AGPGART. Something else I discovered is that the AGPGART module isn't even loading when the kernel boots. For some reason the CentOS-3 installer won't install that module when I install the distro on a computer using an Nforce2 motherboard. It does installing it on my Home computer which is running an Nforce1 based motherboard. Getting Ethereal to work?

I'd like to get Ethereal to run on CentOS 3x. Now, yum says everything is in place for ethereal, but I can't find any executable and am feeling real dumb. I've checked numerous forums (and the Red Hat site), but I can't find anything specific. I've used locate and find, but while there is a lot of ethereal material spread around on my CentOS 3 server, I'm missing the big piece to run it. Anyone point me in the right direction? Usually less than 24 hours but there is a libpng security update that hasnt been taken care of im guessing because its been 3 days since the posting on redhats site.. i have checked all the mirrors listed on the site (centOS) and yet to see the updated libpng rpm... i understand that kernel issues are some what different in being that it deals with pretty much the whole system..but... a libpng update is something rather small and could have been released already...i have rebuilt the src.rpm on a test server (using rpmbuild --rebuild src.rpm) but didnt know exactly if that was the proper way to rebuild the src rpms (if thats how the people at centOS do those) and didnt install it on my production server...and if it is that easy then i could just rebuild the src.rpms that dont need any spec file changes until i get a better understanding of what needs to be changed in those type of situations..and just wait for kernel updates from the people at centOS themselves to rebuild those(kernel updates) i am using up2date to keep my system updated with the necessary updates from the servers...could that be an issue or not? i have no problem rebuilding the src.rpms if how i do it is the proper and correct way to accomplish such a task..

I am running centos-3 and have a question about rebuilding errata srpms from redhat. Do all i have to do is run rpmbuild --rebuild filename.src.rpm to rebuild the rpm for use on my centos system? I am talking about the src.rpms that dont have a a filename change for example the rpm file name change for kernels, etc that add c0 to the rpm filename I am assuming that if the src.rpm filename from redhat errata page matches that of the rpm in centos that there were no .spec file changes and that i can run the above command to rebuild the rpm or any other src.rpm and then install the updated rpm on my system.

Hey, I only got a Voodoo Banshee because one was up for auction locally, and I could get it cheap. I also had good results with a cheapie S3 card. I suspect that most any other card might work better than nVIDIA. So if you want to "cut the Gordian knot" and solve the problems fast, F**K nVIDIA, and try any other display card. Rick

Ok, Well I have narrowed it down to my mother board. It is a Biostar mother board with an NForce2 chipset. I have the Nvidia driver working on my home machine which is and Asus board with an NForce chipset running CentOS-3 and the Nvidia driver works fine. It has to be the NForce2 Chipset that is no good. I have tried updateing bios, Kernel and Xfree. There is just something with this NForce2 Chipset. Well that all the info I have right now. Yes, I tried Fedora, and with my hardware running Fedora, I had the same problem with the NVIDIA display card. I then realized it was some Linux problem and not a CentOS problem. Even if using a Fedoral kernel would work for me, I think this would disconnect me from automatic kernel updates via YUM. I got a brand new Voodoo Banshee card off a local auction for less than $10.00. For that kind of money, I would rather not mix and match from different distributions. Hello several months ago I install WhiteBox Linux on several severs, I was happy, not woriing about upgrading every 1,5 year as when I use RH 4.0, 6.0, 7.3, 9.0 .... And then WhiteBox went black, WBEL updates release slowed down and maintainer wont help form anybody. Just telling "If you want quick updates, build it yourself.". I prefer wasting time for customizations and/or improvements instead of things which can be done once and then shared in comunity. So, I try to change may servers from WhiteBox to CentOS. I get a lot of help form Milan Kerslager which shifted form WBEL to Tao. I just wonder if there are any known issues. On my test server I only install "centos-release" and removed "whitebox-release" and did "yum update" from CentOS repositories. It just works. The question is if I need those : centos-yumcache centos-yumconf especialy centos-yumconf because it contains same cfg file as yum

I'm getting ready to upgrade to Centos-3.1, but I have a database application that is having difficulty. It needs the libstdc++ libraries. When I run it, it generates the following message: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Well, this error doesn't look so bad, as long as I can run Yum on it and get the libraries. Unfortunately, the Yum install fails with a bad GPG key. I've done this Yum install on Centos-2 (for the same library), so I'm not sure why I'm seeing a failure. When I try : yum -y update I get the error: Error: Could not find the GPG Key necessary to validate pkg /var/cache/yum/update/packages/php-mysql-4.3.2-11.ent.i386.rpm Error: You may want to run yum clean or remove the file: /var/cache/yum/update/packages/php-mysql-4.3.2-11.ent.i386.rpm Error: You may also check that you have the correct GPG keys installed This has not happened to me on other distributions. Linux World Expo 2004 in SF

The cAos Foundation and hosted projects have been granted a booth in the Dot Org Pavilion of Linux World Expo in SF this August. If you are a developer or contributor of the project and would like to help staff the both, please send me a private email so we can coordinate. I don't have the actual numbers of Exhibitor badges that we can get yet, but I would assume it is not many. This means it is first come first serve to receive a booth duty free pass. BTW, only people who can dedicate the entire show time including an extra day before and possibly after the show for setup and tear-down (thus August 1-6) should consider volunteering. Greetings. I have just successfully updated a RH-9 file server to CentOS-3.1. I'm VERY impressed. I have a client who has 4 Redhat servers (1 x 7.3 and 3 x 9.0) that I would like to migrate to CentOS-3.1. Question: My client is willing to send a donation for these boxes but they just want to send you (caosity.org) a check that will cover the next couple of years. Who do we make the check out to? Where do we send the check? And if a bulk donation via check is OK, then please publish the payee information on the website. Another suggestion... Under the "Contribute to the CaOS Foundation", I think it might be useful to specifically list the current help or tasks wanted/needed for the foundation. Moving from Fedora core 1 to CentOS

Hi All, I know you can migrate from RH9 to CentOS but what I was wondering was if anyone has migrated from Fedora core 1 to Centos. If not, I'll moving everything, email, apache, samba, etc.. to a new CentOS machine and do a fresh install of CentOS on the current Fedora Core 1 machine. Just looking for a easier way of getting off Fedora. Thanks, John

Upgrade from RH-9 to CentOS-3.1, any issues?

Greetings, I've got 4 Redhat-9 servers in a production environment and I don't feel like moving to RHEL. So I'm testing CentOS-3.1 now. So far so good. I'd like to get these servers moved over in the next month or so to a better "supported" OS. Are there any issues I should be aware of in upgrades these RH-9 boxes? Should I be able to just stick in the Centos-3.1 CDROM and choose upgrade? Thanks, Michael

NIC detection by anaconda

Hello all, I'm not able to install CentOS in a motherboard with a onboard 3Com gigabit nic (3c904/Syskonnect). Although there's a device driver for the Syskonnect (sk98lin) in the linux kernel, the installation program is asking for this interface module. I tried to create a device disk, but without success. Maybe I'm missing some information about the modules detection by the installation. How could I check the modules in the iso image ? or how could I insert a new module in the iso image ? Anyone could gime me some help on this problem ? TIA, Lauro Whately.
