Centos 7 upgrade squid problem.

hi all, I have a question about upgrade squid 3.5.26. I was install squid 3.5.20 via yum in Centos 7, but now I need to upgrade squid 3.5.26 to test about the bug in delay_pools. But the least version of squid in Centos7 is 3.5.20. my question ~ Can I just download the package "squid-3.5.26.tar.gz" and config it ? but I'm flesh in linux I don't know how to ./configure. Slow Samba

Hello friends, I have a Gigabit network with few Windows and Centos 7 machines and I noticed that when copying files via Samba from: Windows to Windows I can copy files with speed of +- 120 MBps (I think this is the max speed gigabit network can provide) But when copying files from: Centos to Centos I get only speeds of about 40 MBps Windows to Centos 40 MBps Centos to Windows 40 MBps I tried to add these lines: use sendfile = yes socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY to smb.conf file but got no speed improvement, (so I think they dont need to be there, do they?) Please do you know what could be the issue? Is there some way to get full speed the network can provide? P.S.: I had the same issue on 100 mbps network - Win to Win could copy 12 MBps but Centos only 4 MBps. Thank you very much for your time Have a nice day

vfstp and renaiming of files with ftp client

Hi, I have a vsftp server and two users for up and download. If user Alice uploads a file, the owner is set to Alice as expected "-rw-r--r-- alice ftpuploadgroup" Now Bob can login to the same folder and is able to rename the uploaded file. Bob can also rename an uploaded folder, but can't rename a file in that folder .... I'm confused, as I don't get why this is possible at all. Some vsftp magic? :) Can someone explain that to me? OpenVAS: confusion with 3rd party repos

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with OpenVAS, the vulnerability scanner which was forked from Nessus. I'm reading through various HOWTOs and tutorials, and it seems like I'm stuck very early in my fiddling process. All the CentOS-based tutorials I've found mention a third-party Atomic repo, and here's how the installation usually begins. # wget -q -O - http://www.atomicorp.com/installers/atomic | sh Yet on my servers I have EPEL configured for my third-party needs, and OpenVAS already seems available through EPEL. # yum search openvas ... openvas-cli.x86_64 openvas-gsa.x86_64 openvas-libraries.x86_64 openvas-libraries-devel.x86_64 openvas-libraries-doc.x86_64 openvas-manager.x86_64 openvas-scanner.x86_64 The documentation I've found only mentions a single 'openvas' package, and I'm supposed to run 'openvas-setup' after installation. Now I tried to install the core packages found above, but there's no 'openvas-setup'. Any suggestions? TeX Live on CentOS 7

Hi, I just installed the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner on my CentOS 7 workstation. Everything seems to work fine, except PDF generation. The 'openvas-check-setup' script tells me that PDF generation works fine, but whenever I want to generate a report, the result is unusable and can't open in Evince or Okular. After googling a bit, I found out that several users complained that Tex Live is broken under RHEL/CentOS 7. While I did use LaTeX a long time ago to write documents, I don't use it anymore nowadays (just Markdown or LibreOffice). But I do need a working installation of TeX Live for OpenVAS PDF reports. What can I do now? Perform a manual installation of TeX Live with their provided installer (to /opt) and then blacklist all texlive* packages? I admit I'm a bit surprised that a distribution like RHEL/CentOS that prises quality wouldn't provide a working TeX Live in their package repositories. Any suggestions? getting rid of hp c3180

I have a hp photosmart C3180 all-in-one and am well and truly sick of it. It seems like every time I go on another printing binge, I need yet another print cartridge. hp-clean doesn't help. IIRC this use it or lose it "feature" is common to inkjets. What should I replace it with? If I want a non-cloggging printer, is laser jet the way I need to go? Hello Guys, our cluster runs till 2014 on supermicro board. It is not unusual that still mainboards with mga graphics cards are delivered. So I have then adjusted the mga driver from centos 6 - the specification file - , to be build on CentOS 7. Since then this runs on the headnode without failures. installer with centosplus kernel?

Hi all, Is there any way to get a CentOS 7 ISO with the centosplus kernel? I have some very old hardware I'd like to keep going if easy, but it has old NVidia network cards that need the forcedeth driver. Apparently this driver is now in the centosplus kernel, but if I use the default ISO I won't be able to get on the network to get the centosplus kernel. (Of course I can get the kernel to the machine in other ways, but over the network is by far the most convenient.) See https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7359 for more details. Cron sending to root after changing MAILTO

I am running CentOS 7 on an outbound gateway server running Postfix. I have a couple of cron jobs I was expecting to see in my email that never showed up. It turns out that they were delivered to root, which is restricted on our exchange server, instead of the address I defined. Thanks to all offers free service to provide Centos. Why? After I had the BIOS for the laptop T440 & docking station had I had immediately after the first installation works, without any failures. Since I know how hard such a work is, I thank everyone in the community to make that possible. Without a stable base I can not perform my Linux tests. Since I often have the time micht Rolling releases like ArchLinux or every half year, I know at the latest after a year, a Fedora update to perform is CentOS exactly the correct. I do not need the GUI support as in OpenSuSE, because who comes times from the shell knows what I mean. Most cluster nodes in my work are computing machines with an average run time of 220 days, usually over a year before they need a reboot. When I think about my virtual Windows 10, which every week requires a restart. I had already more than 30 distros active in my hands, but none read so easily. Of course you can always improve something here and there and yet it comes on a good basis. Furthermore, I find the handling of rpm easily understandable. Small supplement to my repo: - I provide the packages of my work - They are not signed because I do not see you directly as an additional repository for everyone, rather than as an exponential fundus. - Each external repostory changes the basic system. - new dependencies to the packages. - Users also indirectly depend on it. - Repositories in the past have already led to a new split of the basis. Best example: Debian -> Ubuntu -> Linux Mint. I don't like that point at all. - The holder is bound, in a certain way, to the care and demand of the Community. - I definitely miss the time. Still fighting the IPv6 client dying...

Well, we're still fighting it, and one thing I've discovered that I find extremely odd: the IPv6 lease file. On my C7 workstation, if I grep -c lease6, I see 5 leases; on a C6 server, I see 9, and in the last few days, I saw my box - they mass restarted the IPv6 clients everywhere yesterday, because a good number of systems had lost the client. Can someone explain why there would be more than, say, 2 or 3 lease6's in the least file? mark

Installing support for Chinese text in Centos 7

I have just done a minimal installation of Centos7 followed by X Windows and the Mate desktop on a workstation. Although the default language is English, I would like to be able to write Chinese text in various applications. I seem to remember this was very easy to do in Centos 6 and Gnome: possibly only requiring only a simple 'yum groupinstall "Chinese Support"' after which I could use iBus to switch between languages. This does not seem to work in Centos 7. Suggestions? Thank you.

CentOS 7 + KDE: sleep mode?

Hi, One of my clients is running CentOS 7 + KDE 4.14 which I installed for her. Everything is running nicely. She asked me - more out of curiosity - if she could use the "Sleep" mode instead of "Shutdown" like she did when she ran Windows, so the PC would be up and running faster the next time. I didn't know what to answer, since I don't explicitly use this mode. Only on my laptop I simple shut the lid, which puts the laptop into Sleep mode. But on a normal PC, I don't know if this mode is supposed to be used. Any suggestions? CentOS 7, NM, and IPv6

Hi, folks, I and the other admin here have just been assigned a mission... here's what's happening: only very recently - the last week? our CentOS 7 boxes, or at least some of them, will lose their IPv6 addresses, and not get it back. 1. We're running dibbler on the same box that serves DHCP. 2. It's been working for many months. 3. The lease file remains in place. 4. It appears to try, several times, and then give up - as our manager puts it, "I to renew the lease", "Here it is","Nope, don't like that, try again", and eventually, after 4 or 5 or so tries, gives up. One very show-stopping result of this is that NFS starts timing out. So: has anyone else seen this behaviour recently, and does anyone have some idea of what might be going on here? mark

The trouble is Postfix fails if OpenDKIM and SASLAuthd aren’t already running and I have to manually restart these services in order. Rsync Error: Centos Mirror

Hi, I have recently been receiving the following errors when using rsync to update my centos local repositories; rsync: send_files failed to open "/7/atomic/x86_64/repo/tmp/tmp.HBjcIF" (in centos): Permission denied (13) rsync: send_files failed to open "/7/atomic/x86_64/repo/tmp/tmp.SWIH0I" (in centos): Permission denied (13) I have checked and the user that runs the rsync script has all permissions to read and write into the destination folder (centos). old hardware / minimal netinstall -> CPU fan control

I have just installed CentOS 6 i386 onto an old rack server (it's gonna be a Bacula storeage server and is a 1U 1/2 depth chassis) I did a minimum netinstall and so far so good. However, I have one problem. The CPU fan is going at full speed constantly. Not a real problem apart from (a) it will affect the fan's lifespan and (b) it's noisy. I've done some Googling and found some help. I've installed lm_sensors and run sensors-detect. After reboot I get the following: [root@harpo ~]# sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +40.0°C (crit = +75.0°C) [root@harpo ~]# which implies that it can read the CPU temp, but the fan is still going at full speed. Can anyone suggest what I need to do next to enable fan speed control? chkconfig madness CentOS 7

I have a couple of in use C7 boxes that were built with ntsysv and chkconfig for some old packages that needed to start using init.d. (The person setting these up didn't know about systemd creating service files for older packages, so we're stuck with these as-is. Here's my problem: Error unpacking rpm package chkconfig-1.7.2-1.el7.x86_64 error: unpacking of archive failed on file /etc/init.d: cpio: rename chkconfig-1.3.61-4.el7.x86_64 was supposed to be removed but is not! I can't update the entire system because of this boondoggle and I can't come up with a way to resolve this safely on a running system. WTH is going on, and why is this a problem? Azure Centos Images

Hello, I was wondering if there is any plan to support an official image for the Microsoft Azure cloud platform? Currently there is a third party publisher "OpenLogic" providing an Centos image but I don't know who they are. Redhat is providing a RHEL 7.3 template and Canonical is providing Ubuntu. Problem with download from local mirror

Hello Dear I have lunched a local mirror but, I have a problem when I want to download package from it , I get this error when I run "yum update" failure: repodata/repomd.xml from base: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. http://centos.local/7/os/i386/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 4 04 - Not Found I do not Find out what is problem? I haved installed centos 7 as Client and want to download package from centos.local server and there is one another , I checked on another PC and get this error http://centos.local/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found Trying other mirror. I've just done a little "study" (well, nothing quite that pretentious) of the traffic hitting my router, that gets DROPped the router's firewall. there is a surprisingly (to me, at least) enormous amount of it. over about the last 3 weeks, it has dropped over 65,000 connection attempts. I finally got around to figuring out how to have the router's logging mechanism connect to the rsyslog on my Centos workstation, so I can collect a large body of log entries to review. previously I could see only a few hundred at a time, since the router doesn't have huge storage. Here's just the first few items from the list, listed as port number ordered by total number of hits: DPT=3343 8859 DPT=23 7872 DPT=3344 5984 DPT=6 4925 DPT=68 4291 DPT=9 2625 DPT=3291 2524 DPT=32915 2523 DPT=143 2467 DPT=1433 2377 DPT=445 2037 DPT=33441 1544 DPT=33442 1522 DPT=33440 1511 DPT=33434 1511 DPT=33435 1487 DPT=33436 1486 DPT=33437 1476 DPT=33439 1458 DPT=33438 1439 DPT=80 1068 DPT=33443 1060 DPT=5060 948 Some of those are ports I've never been aware of, such as 3343, which /etc/services lists as "ms-cluster-net". Obviously something on MS systems, and apparently a lot of mal-dudes think it's a great port to hit on, in case it might just happen to be wide open. then there's port 23 (telnet) which at 7872 hits is ample evidence for why everybody who knows anything says to NEVER put a system on the internet with an open telnet port. sigh. Then, even after all this garbage is filtered out, there is another HUGE pile of things hitting my mail server that get filtered out by a variety of filtering techniques including but not limited to greylisting email. (BTW, greylisting was by far the most effective of all the filtering techniques I've found for dropping spam before it ever gets into my mail system. For mail that does get in, SpamBayes works great, once one figures out how to configure it.) If any of you don't believe that the 'net is populated by evil beings, let this be a lesson to ye! System Start-Up Issue

We run several Intel-based CentOS machines. They are all at 6.9 or 7.x. One of each OS is Oracle VirtualBox hosted on an up to date Windows 7 system. We use these virtual machines for checkout of new applications before they are loaded on native CentOS platforms. Regular weekly updates are run on all of our CentOS machines. I went on vacation right after an update to one of our virtual CentOS 6.9 systems so it was not restarted for a period of time. Now it will not complete boot-up with the gnome display never fully launched. A progress bar at the bottom of the start-up screen never reaches completion. We have not been able to detect a running system on the network. Two options for stopping the CentOS 6.9 virtual machine have been tried. One is to "power off" and the other is to "send the shutdown message". Both of these options appear to work properly. The shutdown output scrolls by very fast but it looks reasonable and the virtual machine eventually closes. We have also tried suspending boot-up and selecting two previous working kernels. This yields the same result of an incomplete start up. Shutdown of these old kernel systems appears the same as shutdown of the newest kernel. However, we have not been able to determine from any of the shutdown sequences exactly how much of the system was actually running. Having very little experience with such start-up issues, we are at a loss to determine how to salvage the CentOS 6.9 virtual machine. Is there a standard way to start up a system without any extras like gnome to see if we can get a running system? Would it be wise to attempt using yum update after we get a running system to see if issues are corrected? Thanks.

Differences in CentOS and RHEL systems

Hi, I was looking at the differences between the CentOS and RHEL systems, found that tuned profile is different for these OSes. I have gone through RHEL 7 Performance Tuning Guide to see if there are more such changes, sysctl settings change which are due to tuned profile and did not find any other differences Also took diff of /etc/* config files on RHEL and CentOS installed systems, there are RHEL subscription and bugzilla references which vary So, are there more such system wide differences on CentOS? CentOS 7.3 and e1000e

Hi All - I have a box running the above. Power was lost long enough that UPS did not work. When power came back on the C7 box boots way faster than the switch and resulted in no network. power cycling the C7 box resulted in network. This even happened a second time. The only way to get the box back was to power cycle. the box is remote and no keyboard and mouse connected. Any thoughts on why the e1000e would not talk to the switch ? The switch is an unmanaged linksys - could not get the model. It auto negotiates to 1G/full. Thanks, for any thoughts. Jerry

Hardening Apache on CentOS 7

Hi, Some time ago one of my public servers (running Slackware64 14.0) got attacked and was misused to send phishing emails. This misadventure made me more concerned about security, so I spent the last few weeks catching up on security, reading docs about SELinux and how to use it, etc. I have a public sandbox server running CentOS 7, and I'm currently experimenting quite a lot with Apache and how to secure it. My approach is very much trial-and-error. performance problems with OpenLDAP and multiple simultaneous clients

Running CentOS7, with openldap-2.4.40-13.el7. The environment consists of two ldap providers, in mirror mode, serving over a shared virtual IP. Client-facing services are provided by 4 consumers, most of which are accessed over a layer 4 load balancer. Periodically, the consumers encounter some sort of client request(s) which consume all available threads, cause backload threads to spike, and cause slapd to go unresponsive for a long period of time. I've no idea what is causing these events, or if there is anything in the configurations that I can tweak to help. Anyone have any ideas?

Apache + mod_evasive : problem with test.pl

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with the mod_evasive module for Apache, to protect the server against potential DoS attacks. Here's what I did so far. # yum install mod_evasive Don't touch mod_evasive's default configuration, just restart Apache. # systemctl restart httpd The package includes a test.pl script supposed to launch a testing DoS attack. Unfortunately this script doesn't seem to work as expected. Here's the only response I get: # perl test.pl HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request ... mdraid doesn't allow creation: device or resource busy

Dear fellow CentOS users, I have never experienced this problem with hard disk management before and cannot explain it to myself on any rational basis. The setup: I have a workstation for testing, running latest CentOS 7.3 AMD64. I am evaluating oVirt and a storage-ha as part of my bachelors thesis. I have already been running a RAID1 (mdraid, lvm2) for the system and some oVirt 4.1 testing. Now I added 6x 500 GB platters from an old server running Debian 8 Jessie with software RAID of a similar fashion as well. That would unexpectably prevent the system from booting past something like (I copied it from the working setup), I ran it over night, so it was actually about 16 hours: "A start job is running for dev-mapper-vg0\x2droot.device (13s / 1min 30s)" Can it be just some kind of a scan, which takes so long? The current throughput based on time (16 h) and capacity (3 TB) would be about 50 MBps. (Those drives can be pretty slow when writing, dd showed about 30 MBps, the write cache is off.) This is actually repeatable. If I unplug those drives and boot again, it all works. I don't know, if it helps but before that I had two screens full of: "dracut-initqueue[331]: Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout - starting timeout scripts" Well, I proceded without this array, and after it booted I connected the array of 6 hard disks again. They were recognized etc. The problem is, I cannot do much. I can dd from and to the harddrives, I can create and delete partitions but I cannot create an md raid array out of them, I cannot create a physical volume or format them with a filesystem. I even tried overwriting all of those harddrives with zeroes, which worked but didn't help at all with the creation of the array afterwards. mdadm --create /dev/md6 --level=5 --raid-devices=6 /dev/sd[cdefgh]1 "mdadm: cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy" with pvcreate, it seems as if there was no device, but I clearly see it in /dev/sdc1... "Device /dev/sdc1 not found (or ignored by filtering)." partprobe yields: "device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy Warning: parted was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/mapper/ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made. device-mapper: create ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1part1-mpath- ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY failed: Device or resource busy device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy" In some forums, it was suggested, dmraid (yes, the old) could be the trouble. I eliminated this hypothesis (overwritten all with zeroes, fakeraid was never present with these disks). Also multipathd/ dm_multipath could be the trouble, someone suggested. The problem is, if I was to remove device-mapper-multipath, I would loose oVirt-engine, because it has multipath as dependency for some reason. Do you have any ideas? Extreme frustration with GIMP

I am not a graphics person. Also can't afford to hire one. Trying to follow instructions at https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-quickie-separate.html I use the "intelligent scissors" just like they say, spend quite a bit of effort doing so. Then click the foreground select tool - just like they say - and suddenly everything I did with the intelligent tool is undone. WTF? Does anyone know of an actual GIMP tutorial for removing background that doesn't cause me to throw a damn brick through my monitor? Photoshop makes it easy, but clearly GIMP developers have a completely different philosophy on how a graphics tool should work and I can't figure out what their philosophy is.

Web server files ownership?

Hi, I have a series of websites hosted on two CentOS 7 servers, using Apache virtual hosts. One of these servers is a "sandbox" machine, to test things and to fiddle around.
