BeaverDB might be a good fit if you don't mind that it's written in Java. I actually find myself using Valentina Studio these days. It's not open source, but it is free, and it's written in Qt, and is multi-platform. Sound problem, possibly Mate Volume Control

Hi all! In the last day or two (on Centos 7)the speaker icon in the Mate top panel, which normally drops down to a volume control, has stopped working. what does "stopped working" mean? It means when I drop down the volume slider and slide it, it makes no difference at all in the output volume. if I right-click that icon, it'll open up "Sound Preferences", which appears to be the same as "Mate Volume Control". Within that program, the input or output level slider DOES work. I fired up alsactrl and it seems to work fine, and will also control volume. I dont have pavucontrol (or is it pavuctl) installed, so I don't suppose it has gotten messed up. I cannot add user to a group permanently

blacklist audio device ???

SuperMicro server board being used as workstation. Board has no audio itself. I have USB headphones I sometimes plug in. Unfortunately every time I plug them in I have use to use audio control panel and choose them. Why? lspci |grep Audio 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) lspci -n |grep "^01:00.1" 01:00.1 0403: 10de:0be3 (rev a1) Seems the cheap nVidia 405 card I have installed has an audio controller (Interestingly reported as Intel HD Audio by the sound control panel) which I guess it has because of the HDMI interface. Is there a way to tell the sound system to pretend that controller isn't there? I will never need audio over the HDMI.

Firefox and Chrome - dicking about with my volume.

I have Centos 7 installed on my laptop which works perfectly fine. I use a variety of music apps including VLS, mplayer and squeezelite. They all work fine, and using the KDE mixer app I have the levels set just as I like them. Why is it then that if i start up either Firefox or Chrome, whichever I start up first creates a new sound device which appears in the mixer, and then changes my master volume level. Firstly, why the hell does a web browser have to create a new sound device, and why the hell does it alter the master volume? Secondly, can anyone tell me how to take back control of my own music volume, and prevent both programs from messing with it?

Disable hybernate/suspend in CentOS 7

Dear Experts, Could someone point me in the right direction: how can I disable hybernate/suspend in CentOS 7? I get workstations for graduate students with decent amount of RAM (32 GB), and for machines with large RAM I either do not have swap at all of have some small (4 GB) swap. As I remember from older manuals, one has to have at least twice amount of swap compared to physical RAM for hybernate/suspend to work. This probably is what bit me: new Dells came with keyboard that has sleep button, when one hits that button the machine locks up. (it stays powered on, does not respond mouse, keyboard, does not respond ping). I would like to disable that sleep button on keyboard. (I'm kind of trying to avoid replacing keyboard with the ones that do not have "sleep" key). Thanks a lot for all your help! Backup Suggestion on C7

Hi list, I'm building a backup server for 3 hosts (1 workstation, 2 server). I will use bacula to perform backups. The backup is performed on disks (2 x 3TB on mdraid mirror) and for each hosts I've created a logical volume with related size. This 3 hosts have different data size with different disk change rate. Each host must have a limited sized resource and a reserved space. If a server needs more space to perform backup, It must be enabled and provisioned. My first solution was put each host pools on different logical volumes, like: host1 -> lv1 host2 -> lv2 host3 -> lv3 and store pools/volumes on specified storage daemon that uses a specified device for each different hosts. host1 -> storage1 -> device_lv1 host2 -> storage2 -> device_lv2 host3 -> storage3 -> device_lv3 Unfortunately, I can't define on bacula-sd.conf multiple storage definition but only multiple devices. To use different storage I must run 3 bacula-sd on same host (I can?), run a bacula-sd on a vm/host. Ah, I must use only one physical server. With one single machine and the current state I can't use multiple storage daemons. There are other ways to store host volumes on different devices? My second solution was, use only one storage daemon (on the same host) with a single device LVM over mdraid, create pool for each hosts and limit the size for each volumes on related pool. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

C7 and WOL

Hi list, I've encountered a problem with wol. I'm not new to this but this time I found unwanted behaviuor. I'm triyng to wol another c7 machine. When I run ether-wake @mac the system is started. When I shutdown the system after 3 seconds it start again and again and again. To block this wol-loop I must disable wol on uefi or shutdown the switch. I don't know what check. Any suggestions? gigE -> 100Mb problems

I've got a pair of identical CentOS 6.7 servers, with SuperMicro X8DTE-F motherboards, these have 2 each Intel 82574L ethernet ports. The eth0 ports are plugged in with 10' runs of brand new cat 5e cable to a Cisco Nexxus 9000 switch (provided by the data center). These servers keep coming up at 100baseT rather than gigE. I've swapped ports and cables with a different server, that server gets gigE but these supermicro's are stuck at 100baseT regardless of the port or cableused. 'ethtool eth0' says its gigE, but 'mii-tool -v eth0' says its 100baseT and doesn't even list gigE as an option, and the cisco switches see it as 100baseT too. anyone else run into anything like this before? -- john r pierce, recycling bits in santa cruz

Unable to install extras "centos-release-scl" "epel-release"

I have CentOS7 32-bit x86 AltArch in a VM. Following advice I found on Google, I tried stuff like "sudo yum install centos-release-scl" and "sudo yum install epel-release". They came back with... Virtualbox image

How do you make a Virtualbox image of C7 so that when you EXPORT that image and someone imports it that the values in /etc/fstab will be OK. Example: UUID=13813d49-15b7-48ed-ab0d-da52aa3a9078 / xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=7f25297f-170c-4aee-ad4f-7ccc5867ed25 /home xfs defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/centos-swap swap swap defaults 0 0 Then the exported, imported image boots its still referencing the first UUID there and it cannot find it so it does not boot. How can I change this so my image runs, and then when I export it and someone imports it that their image runs. ??? Thanks, Jerry

Proper setup for major package removals?

I've installed CentOS in a QEMU VM for some gcc-compiling work. I've used Gentoo for years, but am a newbie at CentOS. During install, I selected "development" options, which pulled in more than I really need. I don't want or need a heavy desktop environment chewing up part of the 4 gigs allocated to the VM, but I will occasionally need a GUI. What I'd like to do is remove GDM, Gnome DE, Java, Ruby, and a bunch of other stuff. Then install ICEWM. I want to remove GDM, but keep X, so that the machine comes up at the text command line. If/when I need a GUI, I'll type "startx", after setting up ~/.xinitrc. So far, I've made one change to yum.conf, by adding remove_leaf_only=1 I think that my next 2 steps should be to execute... init 3 yum groupremove gnome-desktop Then what? "yum search icewm" does not find anything, and I may still have GDM trying to log me in to a non-existant GNOME. What do I do next? By the way, at startup, I notice a message quickly flash by like... I have Centos 6.8 running on a VPS and upgraded PHP from 5.3 to 5.4 using scl. Unfortunately it seems mcrypt is not available, neither for 5.4 nor for 5.5. What have other users done about that? Unfortunately I have an application that requires mcrypt.

Dear All, Could someone recommend open source dictionary one can install on CentOS 7? I have a user who needs Chinese-English dictionary. He downloaded it from some website in China. My problem is: I neither speak nor read Chinese (were it English, Russian or German I would be OK), so I can not read the License agreement, and I can not audit this software (or evaluate somehow else its sanity). But installing open source Chinese-English dictionary would solve these my problems (if my user accepts the replacement). Thanks a lot for your advises! External monitor support changes.

I've been working on this issue for quite a while. Back in January of 2015 I posted about how well external monitors worked with the out-of-the-box CentOS 7 ATI radeon drivers and my Dell M6500 with an ATI FirePro M7820. At the time the support was seamless and 'Just Worked' without any issue. A few months later, some update came down the pipe and this broke completely, with the same projector that had been working fine for a while. It just simply quit working. The docked double monitors still worked fine, and it wasn't a critical issue for me, so I kept trying it occasionally to see if it would start working again, but it never did. So last week I upgraded laptops to a Dell Precision M6700 with an nVidia card, upon which I immediately installed the ELrepo drivers. The docked dual monitors worked fine (used in a triple monitor setup, just like the ATI card in the M6500). So I decided I would try the HDMI port. Well, it did exactly the same thing the M6500 with the ATI card did. The symptom is that the laptop screen will blank, then come back for a bit, then blank for a few seconds then come back; lather, rinse, repeat. I hadn't tried the M6500 in a while with it, so I'm going to try it again and look at the Xorg log, but my recollection is that the symptoms and log were the same. There isn't any error condition reported in the Xorg log; it just doesn't ever display anything on the projector. While I realize that the nvidia drivers are ELrepo packages, the same symptoms happened with the M6500's ATI with the stock CentOS 7 ATI drivers; it worked beautifully one day, then some updates came, and it just quit working, using the same projector, cables, and receiver. I don't recall exactly where in the 7.x cycle this happened, unfortunately. I may give the original 7.0 a whirl then the original 7.1 a whirl, but I think it started with the 7.2 release. It could be the receiver in the middle, and I'll try a direct cable to the projector. But I tried that with the M6500 and it didn't change anything. But, again, the docked triple-head configuration works like a champ. I will perform more testing and update as I find things.

Desktop for newbies

Folks I'm about to set up a non-root user on a Centos=7 server that I control for a friend. It is in his home, so access is local. He's a refugee from the latest Windows 10 Upgrade. I'd like a suggestion as to which of the several possible graphical desktops to suggest to him and set up for him as his default. My aim is: - Allow him to try out Linux as an end-user - Let him start to feel comfortable with the desktop - Learn the new idioms for familiar programs and functions And later - Give him his own system with root privileges. 3rd and 4th keys keymapped in Keyboard Layout???

Looking at the Keyboard Layout in CentOS 7.2, there are a 3rd and 4th characters for many keys. E.g., for 'd' there are the division sign and the degree symbol. I've tried the obvious key combinations-- Alt-d, Alt-Shift-d, etc.-- but no luck. Is there some configuration change I need to make in Gnome...? or what do I need to do to access these 3rd and 4th key characters? tia

Kerberized NFS client and slow user write performance

We seem to be increasingly hit by this bug: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2040223 "On RHEL 6 NFS client usring kerberos (krb5), one user experiences slow write performance, another does not" You need a RH subscription to see that in its entirety. But the subject basically says it all: randomly, one or more users will be subjected to *terrible* NFS write performance that persists until reboot. There is a root cause shown, but that is cryptic to non-kernel devs; it doesn't explain from a user perspective what triggers this state. (That's why it appears to be random to me.) There is no solution or workaround given. This appears to be on a per-user + per-server basis, so a crude workaround is to migrate the user to a different server. And we do regular reboots, which somewhat hides the problem. My question to the list: has anyone else dealt with this? The link says "Solution in Progress", but that was last updated nearly a year ago. We don't have any support contracts with upstream, just the website access subscription, so I doubt RH will offer any help. Appreciate any suggestions! Thanks, Matt

Python and LibreSSL Patch

One of my hobbies (I need a life) is working on getting stuff to build against LibreSSL in CentOS 7 Part of that involves some test (not production) machines where openssl has been removed. Discovered some issues with Python built again LibreSSL - it passes the test suite in %check if you just change the BuildRequires but the result is some modules have some unresolved symbols the test suite oddly didn't catch (e.g. RAND_egd and some sslv3 stuff) http://awel.domblogger.net/7/purelibre/Python-2.7.5-rhel7-libressl.patch.txt That patch takes care of all of those (I think) as well as fixing the test suite - which fails after fixing python for the unresolved symbols unless disabling the checks that simply won't work with LibreSSL Anyway the patch has fixes from a variety of places as well as a few of my own. In *theory* it should also work if rebuilding the RHEL/CentOS against an OpenSSL build with SSLv3 removed. Though it might be interest to some. Patch doesn't apply to pristine Python 2.7.5 but to Python 2.7.5 after the various Red Hat patches are applied. -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

FYI. if anyone has problem the new thunderbird update 45.4.0 trying to start with Lightning calendar and gets the "Add-ons Manager" tab error message of a missing component, click the "Extensions" to left. in Lightning 'bar', select [Disable], restart thunderbird, problem solved. i do not use Lightning calender, so problem was easy to solve. if you have been using Lightning calender, problem may not occur. -- peace out. Just want to thank everyone for their help. I finally got the virtualization going. I know you guys that do this for a living may not feel this way, but in the eyes of this guy, this is AWESOME!! Been doing linux as a hobby since Slackware 1.0, then moving to RH 2.x. I have a little website but it's a hosted site. Back in the early days, I previously tried doing it from home. Upgraded to a 'business' class connection, static IP, etc. I remember one time driving from Charlotte, NC back to Lexington, SC at 8:00PM to reboot the server, and back to Charlotte. I now use my home server for testing new features. A php upgrade by my hosting company a few years about killed me. It took weeks to correct the deprecated functions. Hopefully now, I can stay a little ahead of the game. Now its set it an forget, unless there is a hardware issue, kernel update, version update, or me doing a reboot after an uninstall or something, I can spend my little free time on other things. Things have come a long ways because of people like you. Tip of the hat to you!!

Hey All, I'm considering moving from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7. I'm not interested in dealing with Gnome 3. I've heard good things about Mate, a fork of Gnome 2. it appears that Mate is available in the EPEL repository associated with CentOS 7. Have any of you tried Mate on CentOS 7? Hello, I'm a little confused on which networking option I need to choose when setting up a VM. I set up two VMs this past weekend both with NAT. Both able to were access the internet. The first one, I created in my / file system but didn't really have the space so I deleted it. The second one, I created in /home/kvm, but deleted it as well when I couldn't access it FROM the internet. I had a full backup scheduled for that night and deleted it as well. I have one of those free domains/DNS from no-ip.com, centos7vm.ddns.net I plan to use as the host name. I want to be able to access this VM from the internet. So, how much in the network setup for the new installation do I need to do? Do I need to go with NAT or bridged? I did four installations last night and could get any of the access the internet with ym. Must have been dumb luck the first two times. I think it maybe something in iptables from one of the previous installs causing the problem. In ifconfig, I still have virbr0 and virbr1. Didn't have those before. Hey guys, My NFS server has been working really well for a long time now. Both client and server run CentOS 7.2. However when I just had to remount one of my home directories on an NFS client, I'm now getting the error when I run mount -a mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified This is the corresponding line I have in my fstab file on the client: nfs1.example.com:/var/nfs/home /home nfs rw 0 0 I get the same error if I try to run the mount command explicitly: mount -t nfs nfs1.example.com:/var/nfs/home /home mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified This is the verbose output of that same command: mount -vvv -t nfs nfs1.example.com:/var/nfs/home /home mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Oct 2 23:17:03 2016 mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'vers=4,addr=162.xx.xx.xx.xx,clientaddr=107.xxx.xx.xx' mount.nfs: mount(2): Invalid argument mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified This is the entry I have in my /etc/exports file on the nfs server /var/nfs/home web2.jokefire.com(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_all_squash) I get this same result if the firewall is up or down (for very microscopic slivers of time for testing purposes). Hi all, Is anyone using unbound to do dns64 on CentOS 7? A quick 'unbound -h' shows both 'validator' and 'iterator' modules, but no dns64. Was it just not included or is there a supplementary or alternative package I need to install? I had it working on CentOS 6 and don't recall any special setup, so when I realized the dns64 module was missing from unbound in CentOS 7, it kinda caught me off guard. jb

CentOS on new Thinkpads

Is anyone running CentOS on a newish Thinkpad? I have been using Linux as my primary workstation since about 97 and it seems like using Linux as a desktop has slipped over the years. After the Gnome desktop dumb-down, I have been nursing CentOS 6.8 on a 5 yo Toshiba. So I was hoping that someone has some recent real-world experience with new Thinkpads. So is anyone running a new Thinkpad? What model? Any problems with wireless or suspend or the touchpad? It seems optical drives are gone. Do I boot the iso from USB or what's the procedure now? Generally seeking new laptop advice. If Lenovo is not good is anyone using Toshiba? Mike

I've had success on "older" model Lenovos.....(T-410 / T-420 / T-430) but anything beyond those seems to have some issue or another. I was even able to swap the standard drive to an SD (250GB) on a T-430 and it's running g like a champ. Centos 7.2.1511 with sendmail and a problem with clamav

Everyone, I am putting together a new CentOS 7 mail server for our organization and am having some difficulty getting clamav to work with the clamav- milter for sendmail. I have set /etc/clamd.d/scan.conf to use clamscan as the user as well as root as the user and the status command of systemctl results in the same error messages : ● clamd(a)scan.service - Generic clamav scanner daemon Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/clamd(a)scan.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled) Active: failed (Result: start-limit) since Thu 2016-09-29 17:53:11 CDT; 1min 38s ago Process: 1891 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/clamd -c /etc/clamd.d/scan.conf -- foreground=yes (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE) Main PID: 1891 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE) Sep 29 17:53:11 IrGw3.EcCare.com systemd[1]: Unit clamd(a)scan.service entered failed state. I have not been able to figure out what is happening with the command : systemctl start clamd@scan The same error messages occur at boot with this command as well as on the command line.
