dbus/systemd failure on startup (CentOS 7.7)

We are seeing a problem that occurs ~5% of the time when rebooting CentOS 7.7 where systemd gets a 'Connection timed out' to D-Bus just after the D-Bus service starts - from 'journalctl -x' : ... Whatever the issue is, it appears that polkit might be involved - if we restart the polkit service, things appear to return to normal (e.g. gdm starts up etc) We can't find any similar reports of this happening elsewhere with CentOS 7.7 - but we were wondering if anyone else had come across a problem like this? Nested Virtualization with CentOS 7 host and CentOS 8 guest

I'm not sure whether this is a specific CentOS question, but I'm hoping someone here can give me some pointers. I have an OpenStack compute node running CentOS 7.4.1708 and kernel 3.10.0-693.17.1.el7.x86_64 which is configured for nested virtualization; this has been set up for a few years and works fine when running CentOS 7 guests which themselves are using virt-create / virt-customize etc. Nova is set up on the compute node so that guests have cpu mode host-passthrough. I have been trying to run a CentOS 8 guest on the compute node so that I can build CentOS 8 images for OpenStack (there is an issue using a CentOS 7 server to build a CentOS 8 image related to xfs options which are only supported read-only by CentOS 7). However, every time I try to build a CentOS 8 image using a CentOS 8 guest, the CentOS 8 guest crashes with a kernel panic, not immediately but usually near the end of the image build process. (I have also seen similar behaviour using a Fedora 31 guest to build a CentOS 8 image, but the crashes are less frequent, and some image builds have succeeded). The CentOS 8 guest is running CentOS 8.1.1911 (Core) and kernel 4.18.0-147.3.1.el8_1.x86_64. Any ideas?

OwnCloud vs NextCloud

I am planning to install either ownCloud or NextCloud on a CentOS 7 VPS server I control. I have previously used ownCloud on another server but have not updated the host application for quite some time. On this new server, I am not sure which one is the "best" and since I am doing a new install I need to decide which one to use. Looking at the Android apps for these cloud solutions, they both seem to have a fair number of critical reviews... Does anyone have a preference and, if so, why?

tftp server different from dhcp one

C8 network install

I'm building a new storage server. I was unable to use the CentOS-8- x86_64-1905-dvd1.iso image written to a 256GB thumb drive. It kept failing the integrity check. I had to use the much smaller CentOS-8- x86_64-1905-boot.iso image and do a network install from a mirror site. That's a first for me. Even though I selected "Server with GUI", the resulting installation boots to a text prompt. I've installed the GNOME and GNOME Applications groups, and I can get to them by typing 'startx'. How do I change this behavior and make it boot directly to a graphical desktop? --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL

running .jar files on Centos 7

OT!!!!! I'm trying to learn to use audio cleanup tools from clickrepair.net. they're written in Java and distributed as .jar files. I'm having trouble running them, due, I'm sure, largely to my ignorance. I have icedtea installed, but it just errors out when I try to use it to run any of the jar files: Fatal: Read Error: Could not read or parse the JNLP file. Centos 8 hardware compatibility testing

With Centos 7 I've used the Live Image in stores like Staples to test (mostly) laptops for compatibility simply by booting the computer off of a flash drive and getting the desktop up and trying stuff out (sound, networking, touchpad, etc.) If it doesn't work, shut down, remove the flash drive and nothing has changed on the laptop that I just tested. Since there is no Live Image for Centos 8 (that I can find, anyway) what's the recommended procedure for doing this sort of compatibility testing? Maybe a Fedora live image? Thanks Robert, I was doing that but it was still renaming to ens*. However, I now know why, and have fixed it. For those who are interested, the problem was that when I created the base image from a kickstart I didn't pass net.ifnames=0 to virt-create, and I ended up with an image that had forgotten about eth0 completely. I have now redone the kickstart with net.ifnames=0 and all is well.
