Ext4 on CentOS 5.5 64bit

Is ext4 stable on CentOS 5.5 64bit? I have an email server with a great deal of disk i/o and was wandering if ext4 would be better then ext3 for it?

IT8218 PCI IDE RAID CARD

I have big problems with this card not working on Centos 5.5 If I run Parted Magic (kernel 2.6.32.11) from CD, then the IT8212F IDE PCI controller is detected OK, and I can access the WD hard drive on the controller, in r/w mode. Running Centos 5.5 I get lots of I/O errors at boot time, and cannot get r/w access to the drive from GParted. Any ideas what's happening, and why Centos 5.5 cannot get access to the IDE drive on the IT8212F controller card? Hello Producers "Longevity of Support" is an attractive drawcard for CentOS if it means the exact opposite of Fedora's "short support cycle" that does not provide updating of infrastructural libraries for very long, libraries which newer versions of applications (like Firefox, Thunderbird, Opera etc) depend on and which wont install unless the libraries are also newer versions? But is that what it means -- ie that those infrastructural libraries (libpango, libcairo etc) are continuously updateable to fairly recent versions? If so, the problem is in reconciling that meaning with the reputation of CentOS to only support older versions of applications (eg Firefox-1.5, Thunderbird-1.0 etc). It does reconcile, of course, if the implications are merely that the CentOS user must compile and install the later versions of such applications from source, rather than having the luxury of pre-packaged binaries. It doesn't reconcile if there is some other critical reason why newer such applications just wont install. But which? I ask here because the profusion of vague mission statements and 'target-enduser-profile' claims that litter the internet re '*nix distros' seldom actually address those real issues. And hopefully someone can enlighten. My complex production & developement desktop takes months to fully port to a new OS (or OS-version), so OS updates to get library updates (ala Fedora philosophy) becomes increasingly untenable. Then there is a further question, I'm afraid. Since CentOS also does specifically target the profile of a so-called 'enterprise/server-user' what does that actually entail. Does it mean concrete security strictures which bolt down non-'root' users or does it merely mean the availability of SELinux (but which can be turned OFF)? For instance, (with SELinux OFF), can a user still: (a) su root via Kterm anytime? (b) Access services-admin anytime via Menu+Pam to control printers, modems, daemons etc? (c) compile (d) have 6 to 8 desktops running (e) call up 'konquerorsu.desktop' (root-konqueror with embedded root-Kterm) (f) have normal cron scheduling .......................................................... maybe more, but that's a start. changing background image

I'm running centos 5.5 - 64 on Nvidia hardware. I am getting video from totem mixed in with my background image when I stop totem. If I change the background back to the default it does not seem to happen. However, as soon as I change the background to something else like ladybug.jpg and run totem fullscreen, then ask totem to quit with "totem --quit" the last video image is mixed in with my background. I did the standard (I think) way to change the background image: /usr/bin/gconftool-2 -t string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename "/usr/share/backgrounds/images/ladybug.jpg" su silentm -c "/usr/bin/gconftool-2 -t string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename '/usr/share/backgrounds/images/ladybug.jpg'" Is there something else I might be missing so the "still" of the video is not mixed in with my background? sendmail / logwatch relaying issue - driving me crazy

Hallo, *<:-) may be I'm to tired to see the solution, maybe someone can give me a hint? I do have a couple of servers, sending the daily logwatch report to a central support email account. Some servers do have DNS A and CNAME records. On my mailserver relaying for the servers is allowed. Only one server drives me crazy, getting user unknown or releaying denied messages. Any idea, how to debug this issue? I'd be glad to fix this as a christmas gift. I could provide logmessages of course. Aravindh, Tell us a little bit about your current server hardware, are your NICs showing using ifconfig, what about your gateway sing route. It would be good to know a little bit about your current configuration, including if you are using IPv6. Please elaborate so we can help you further. Sir/Madam, This is Aravindh,final year student of Anna University India.We are carrying on research in Cloud Computing and using Open Nebula toolkit for that;for which we need strong network connectivity. The problem i am facing is that i am not able to ping continuously to other nodes in the network. The connectivity is getting lost after 2-3 minutes. we have inspected the connectivity links , switch etc. and found them to be normal. In fact it pings continuously in other OS. pam account lockout duration

hey list I'm doing a PCI audit for my company. One of the requirements is to specify a lockout duration of 30 minutes after 6 failed login attempts: For a sample of system components, obtain and insp 8.5.14 rd parameters system configuration settings to verify that passwo ed out, it are set to require that once a user account is lock a system remains locked for a minimum of 30 minutes or until administrator resets the account I'm pretty sure this is a pam thing but does anyone know how this can best be achieved? thanks! -- GPG me!! gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys F186197B

compiling a module

I am interested in fscache module. I know where to get the userland tools (http://people.redhat.com/dhowells/fscache/) but I am not sure where to obtain its module. Moreover, I am not sure once I get the source code how I can compile it for Centos 5.2. Has anyone compiled, fscache before? TIA

Prozilla-gui for centos 5.5 x86_64

Good day, Seen when googled that *prozilla* seem to be very good down loader. Googled but could not find a version for my centos. Found one GUI for Fedora 14 x86_64. Would that install on my system without breaking it. or Maybe one for my system that I missed? Some advice would be appreciated. Thanks Johan
