CentOS 8 and yum-plugin-priorities

Hi, I've been regularly using the Yum Priorities plugin for the last decade or so. Apparently it has been obsoleted with CentOS 8. I've googled around for replacements, and there is some conflicting or otherwise misleading information about it. I'm aware the late Yum developer Seth Vidal had a bad opinion of priorities. This being said, I like the idea of third party repositories not messing with the official stuff. Any suggestions ? Yum on CentOS 8: Failed to set locale, defaulting to C

Hi, I'm currently fiddling with CentOS 8.0 on a sandbox server in order to get acquainted with its various quirks and idiosyncrasies. Here's the first curious detail I noticed. I used the CentOS installer in french (since I live in France), but I like my server systems to default to english. (If you've ever read one of these funny "frengrish" SELinux alerts, you'll understand why. Anyway.) After the installation, I ran this: # localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.UTF8 So here's what I have actually on my minimal system: $ localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr But my initial user still has system messages in french, so I added this to his ~/.bashrc: # LANG LANG=en_US.UTF8 export LANG I logged out and logged back in and tried the 'yum check-update' command, which normally doesn't require root privileges. And here's what I get: $ yum check-update Failed to set locale, defaulting to C Last metadata expiration check: 0:17:42 ago on Mon Dec 16 14:04:39 2019. Any idea on how to make Yum behave here? pdftotext latest version for CentOS 7

I have pdftotext 0.26.5, the current version for CentOS 7 and the Mate desktop as far as I can ascertain. The page https://www.xpdfreader.com/pdftotext-man.html seems to suggest that the latest version is 4.02 which seems a gigantic leap ahead. Since I have a Chinese text PDF which I am unable to extract any text from using pdftotext, instead I end up with a collection of garbage Latin characters, I am curious how to get a later version? Copying and pasting from Atril 1.16.1 (seems to be part of the Mate desktop I am running) also makes me end up with garbage... Not surprising since it also seems to use pdftotext 0.26.5... Any suggestions? Later version of pdftotext? If so, wherefrom? Another PDF-viewer?

log4j12 package in CentOS 8

According to the RHEL docs, package log4j was replaced with package log4j12 in RHEL 8.0. However, when I attempt to install the package in CentOS 8, dnf cannot find it. I have the Base, AppStream, Extras and PowerTools repos enabled. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Wonky Firefox 68.0.1esr upgrade

I just applied a bunch of updates to my CentOS 7 system yesterday, one of which was a Firefox update to 68.0.1esr. Now when I bring up sites I would log in to -- my bank, credit cards, etc., the Password box is wonky and shakes and doesn't display successive dots for characters I type, nor does it accept what I type. My work around currently is to type the password first, then my userid but ???!!!!! Using either a <tab> to get to the Password box or just a click in the Password box causes the same results. Previous Firefox version which worked fine --firefox-60.8.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 HELP! -- "And in the end, only kindness matters." -- Jewel, "Hands" ______ MzK

systemctl behaves like it is being piped to less in centos 8?

Comparing the output of systemctl between centos 7 and 8: [root@mail ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS Linux release 7.7.1908 (Core) [root@mail ~]# systemctl status firewalld ● firewalld.service - firewalld - dynamic firewall daemon Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/firewalld.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: active (running) since Fri 2019-10-25 00:24:24 UTC; 1 months 19 days ago Docs: man:firewalld(1) Main PID: 6578 (firewalld) CGroup: /system.slice/firewalld.service └─6578 /usr/bin/python2 -Es /usr/sbin/firewalld --nofork --nopid Warning: Journal has been rotated since unit was started. Log output is incomplete or unavailable. [root@mail ~]# So far so good. Don't know why it is complaining about log being rotated but output looks readable. Now, let's grab a centos8 box: [raub@vmhost2 ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS Linux release 8.0.1905 (Core) [raub@vmhost2 ~]$ systemctl status firewalld ● firewalld.service - firewalld - dynamic firewall daemon Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/firewalld.service; enabled; vendor p> Active: active (running) since Tue 2019-12-10 20:10:20 EST; 2 days ago Docs: man:firewalld(1) Main PID: 1031 (firewalld) Tasks: 2 (limit: 26213) Memory: 33.5M CGroup: /system.slice/firewalld.service └─1031 /usr/libexec/platform-python -s /usr/sbin/firewalld --nofork > lines 1-9/9 (END) As you can see, it is trimming the output at the end of my terminal window, which I do not care; there are options (-i I think) to make it wrap around, but the line lines 1-9/9 (END) is what is annoying me. That seems to be what I would expect if I piped it to less. I checked a fedora 31 and another centos 8 box and am seeing the same behaviour. Am I missing something?

DebugInfo repo broken on purpose

This line in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Debuginfo.repo baseurl=http://debuginfo.centos.org/$releasever/$basearch/ …causes commands like “yum search --enablerepo=* foo” to fail with the obscure error Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'base-debuginfo' Apparently this is because the debug info RPMs aren’t hosted there any more, per the page at the top of the site. However, when I edit that file to point to the Facebook mirror linked from the top of the debuginfo.centos.org site, I get the same error, even after assorted remediations: dnf makecache, dnf update, etc. Any ideas on how to fix it, hopefully in a way that lands in a CentOS 8.next, so it doesn’t have to be fixed manually? And in the meantime, is there a short syntax for “search all repos other than the debuginfo ones”? I could list every repo in a comma-separated list, but ugh.

dlopen RTD_LAZY and RTLD_GLOBAL

All, I use a code which has a python (I use python36) wrapper loading shared libraries. The code worked fine in RHEL 7 but as I was testing it on Centos 8, python cannot import the shared library (the import is done via dlopen with flags set as > sys.setdlopenflags(os.RTLD_LAZY | os.RTLD_GLOBAL) python then does a bunch of imports and most results in a shared library with indefined symbols. Somthing like: > from .w3dpy import * > ImportError: > /usr/local/lib64/python3.6/site-packages/warp/w3dpy.cpython-36m-x86_64-linux-gnu.so: undefined symbol: multigridxyf2_ The codes works fine on Scientific Linux 7 but had the same problem as above on fedora 31. I suspect something changed in the way dlopen is handled on newer linux version but cannot figure out how the code should be modified... Thank you for any help. All the best, -- Philippe.
