If you deliver more than a few emails to the outside world, especially if a good portion of those go to Yahoo, you may want to read this message: http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=127689518629249&w=2 Actually, read the whole thread, it's interesting and the discussion still continues: http://marc.info/?t=127619611600001&r=1&w=2 TLDR: The 2.3.3 Postfix version that comes with RH / CentOS 5 doesn't do delivery rate control very well and has a habit of annoying some email providers. A simple upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.7.0, no config changes, can improve delivery rate by 50% in some cases (e.g. if you deliver thousands of emails to Yahoo). With config changes, the improvement might be even bigger. Fun fact: Postfix-2.3.3 has been released in August 2006. Think about that. -- Florin Andrei http://florin.myip.org/

Increasing NFS Performance

Greetings all- I have a CentOS 5 (Final) system that is serving up content to several other hosts via NFS. The amount of data transferred is rather small as most of the files are under 100kb and each export has maybe 100 files that are accessed regularly. I'm finding that as I add more hosts accessing the NFS server, the performance seems to be getting poorer. There are obvious delays when doing simple 'ls' on an NFS mounted directory. The mounts are all done on the local LAN (100mbit FDX), all on the same broadcast domain, no routing. One of the clients is a physical CentOS 5 node, the rest (5-6 total) are OpenVZ containers also running CentOS 5. The NFS server is a Dell PE2950 loaded with 7.2K SATA drives. While the disks aren't exactly performance grade, the bottleneck does not seem to be the disks as access on the NFS server itself is 'normal'. Here are the items I've found so far that are told to increase performance. Since this is a production system, I have yet to try these: 1. Increase the number of instances of NFS running. (As found in /etc/sysconfig/nfs) 2. Try sync vs async behavior in mount parameters on clients 3. rmem_default and wmem_default parameters 4. rsize and wsize parameters (Dependent on MTU. Currently, mine is default at 1500) These are the items I'm planning to try but before I dive in (especially during a late night maintenance period...), I was hoping the list members brighter than me could give some comments on the above items and/or suggest some other things I might try. MiscFixed fonts in CentOS 5.5

Hi, I just did a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, as usual : base system, X Window system, GNOME, and then the apps I need. The MiscFixed fonts don't seem to be available in GNOME Terminal anymore. Has the package been renamed? Any idea where they went? It's my favourite font for the terminal. Cheers, Niki

Querying netgroup information

Hi I have been searching for commands to "debug" netgroup membership. I am using netgroups provided by ldap. I can do a ldap query but it seems a bit unwieldy to do. I have found a package on ubuntu called ng-utils https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ng-utils/0.7-1 which does what I require and compiles very easily. It contains two commands netgroup and innetgr to query netgroup membership with. Two questions: * Is there a similar package with similar commands to query netgroup membership available for Centos? I have not been able to find such a package yet. * If there is no similar commands or packages available would it generally be usefull enough to repackage in rpm for Centos/Redhat/Fedora? Using a composite device under Centos 4.8 - no mouse clicks

I recently got an EEEbox. This is an Atom based nettop. It came with a wireless keyboard/mouse which talk to a 2.4Ghz USB adapter (a Chicony device as it turns out). Now if I plug this adapter into a Centos 4.8 machine both the keyboard and mouse are detected... but mouse clicks aren't. I can move the mouse, the scroll wheel works, but buttons 1/2/3 aren't detected. Neither in X nor in console gpm. It worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04, and obviously works fine with Windows XP. My feeling is that maybe perhaps the older 4.8 kernel doesn't have a sufficiently good driver so I might be forced to compile my own (*sigh*) but I was wondering if anyone else had come across a similar issue and had a work around? -- rgds Stephen

Physical-to-Virtual (VMware) & SELinux

Hello guys, I have a couple of servers that I'm about to virtualize to our VMware Vsphere ecosystem. For Linux servers I read that one needs to use the stand-alone converter (which is a live-cd that you boot from it and then you point it to your destination ESX). I would like to know from folks that have already done so...what was your experience like? Did everything went smooth? Any caveats? I'm worried about the filesystem extended attributes (SELinux). Will it survive the migration? Or will I need to relabel the whole filesystem again? Thanks, Jorge

Yum problem on Centos 5.3 (64-bit)

Hello, I'm having a yum problem updating a system on Centos 5.3, 64-bit ... i.e. 'yum update' returns "No Packages Marked for Update". Problem appears to be related to connecting to the mirrors where the repositories are located but I could be wrong in that. What's confusing me is that I have another system (Centos 5.5, 32-bit) that's working fine. Disabling services in CentOS 5.5

Hello all, I have been doing some searching for information about disabling services within a CentOS 5.5 install. I have found a few different opinions, and wanted to ask for some feedback. First off, the system is running a LAMP stack to serve a web application. It will only be doing email to send occasional messages out (sent via the application only). It will not be receiving email for any users. It is an CentOS 5.5 (fully updated) install running under VMware (esx, I believe). We are not sharing directories via nfs or samba (either from or to this virtual machine). >From my research, the services that I am thinking of turning off are: nfs (already off) nfslock portmap rpccgssd rpcidmapd rpcsvcgssd apcid apmd mdmpd mdmonitor Is there any reason that I need to leave any of these services running? Are there others that I should disable as well?
