SOLVED annoying firefox crash on nvidia

A long time ago, there was thread about firefox randomly crashing. http://www.mail-archive.com/centos@centos.org/msg50010.html It turned out not only firefox, but random other X window applications as well. Especially scrolling in firefox seemed to induce the error. I'm now since almost 2 weeks up and running with the same firefox instance and scrolling up/down, left/right, playing video's, viewing websites with heavy javascripts whatever, and without any crash since. I use the proprietary driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run (the latest last time I looked). I believe the cullprit was to explicitly load some modules in the xorg.conf file. (It is probably the "extmod" module -- there is almost no real documentation on what those modules actually do...) While the nvidia driver installs, there is an utility that generates the new xorg.conf file for you, having only one module "glx" loaded. This seems to be source of the trouble. Gnome seems to assume more functionality is available, and does not gracefully recover when asking something that is not implemented in those extra modules. Since adding some more modules, I have no more crashes: Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "fbdevhw" Load "record" EndSection And, as added benefit, or side effect, the memory usage of my gnome applets has drastically gone down. I used to see a simple clock-applet having using 800 Mbyte virtual memory or so and having 400M reported under the "resident memory" column. Other people also reported such a problem, but it was frequently dismissed by explanations like "gnome uses a lot of shared memory it is not real memory". Created a custom/minimal CentOS 5.x install ISO

Hi all, I'd like to try rolling a somewhat stripped down and customized CentOS DVD. This is particularly interesting to me now that CentOS 5.5 is 2 DVDs. I dare not call it a new distro as I suspect I will be the only one to use it. ;) I've been googling for ways to do this, figuring it must be somewhat straight forward, but my google-fu is weak it seems. Can someone point me to a how-to or doc on rolling your own CentOS derivative ISO? Also, I'm not talking about just rolling a new ISO, I can do that already, I want to update the list of RPMs (not)available to the installer. Thanks! PS - I found this link, but it's from 2006. Odd INFO "120 seconds" in logs for 2.6.18-194.3.1

Hi, Since upgrading to "2.6.18-194" I am getting odd messages in the logs. Such as; sraid3 kernel INFO task pdflush 259 blocked for more than 120 seconds. The output from > grep '120 seconds' /var/log/messages | tr : ' ' | awk '{print $10}' | sort | uniq -c 6 nfsd 4 pdflush This is from an NFS server that since the upgrade has been flakey. I have an identical server running "2.6.18-164.11.1" and no such messages are seen. is anyone else seeing this and/or know what is going on? Hi all, I am trying to boot from a HD created as a copy of a running system (and it doesn't work, and I don't understand why ...) This is the system to be copied : File-system Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 2.0G 797M 1.1G 43% / tmpfs 506M 0 506M 0% /dev/shm /dev/hda5 4.7G 3.3G 1.2G 74% /var/spool/squid/cache1 /dev/hda6 4.7G 3.3G 1.2G 74% /var/spool/squid/cache2 The backup of the system has been done with : /bin/tar czO -C / --preserve-permissions --sparse --one-file-system \ --exclude=lost+found --exclude=tmp/* \ . \ | /usr/bin/nc -w 5 my.workstation 6060 # ( after executing # netcat -l -p 6060 > $IMAGE on my.workstation ) On the target HD, I have created three "type 83" partitions and a swap, ran mke2fs -cc -j /dev/$D for the three FS and mkswap -c /dev/$D for the future swap. The target root FS was restored with : tar xzpf $IMAGE -C /mnt/linux On the target root FS, I edited /etc/fstab and /etc/grub.conf, replacing any reference to LABEL=... by the real device (/dev/hda1 and so on). Then I took care of the initrd (future / is mounted on /mnt/linux/) : mount -o bind /dev /mnt/linux/dev mount -t proc none /mnt/linux/proc mount -t sysfs none /mnt/linux/sys rm /mnt/linux/boot/initrd* chroot /mnt/linux mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.img 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 # so far, so good... ... and installed grub on the target HD : /sbin/grub --no-curses find /boot/grub/stage1 # answer : (hd0,0) root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) # answer : succeeded quit exit # (chroot) When I try to boot the target HD (set as hda in a new PC), I get the grub prompt, and I can boot the system. Every thing goes too quickly, so I can't see what is going on, until : ... Trying to resume from /dev/hda3 No suspend signature on swap, not resuming. Creating root device. Mounting root filesystem. mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as auto: No such device Setting up other filesystems. Setting up new root fs setuproot: moving /dev/failed: No such file or directory no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults Then it complains about missing /proc and /sys, and end with : switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! /dev/hda3 is the swap partition on the new disk. The swap was in /dev/hda2 on the old disk, but fstab has been modified accordingly ; other FS are just like on the old disk (I mean, / is hda1, cache1 is hda5 and cache2 is hda6). I have certainly forgotten something, but I am unable to find what... Who can help me ? Thanks, -- Philippe

Is every CentOS release supported for 7 years?

Hi, I've read some posts in the forums which seems to indicate that not every CentOS version is well supported. Is it possible to install CentOS 5.5 on a server and only apply security updates for 7 years? Or is the preferred way to upgrade to each minor version? Thanks in advance! Obsolete releases are not supported, nor is it advisable to be installing or running them. 194 Kernel Panic; 164 is Fine; How Do I Debug?

I have a machine that has worked fine for years on CentOS5. kernel-PAE-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 is the last "works fine" kernel, but kernel-PAE-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 crashes at boot every time. I tried banging on the side of the monitor to no avail. Package Distribution Server?

Dear List, I'm trying to set up a lab with multiple workstations running CentOS 5. Does anybody knows how to keep the packages in sync among workstations? Ideally I want any change made on any machine be able to applied to all other machines. Alternatively, to "push" the changes (add and/or remove packages) from one central server to all other machine is also fine. Thanks Zhihao Lou P.S.: Sorry for the confusion subject line. I really don't know what's the accurate name for the feature I described here.

rsyslog-relp - CentOS 5.5

Hi We have been using rsyslog and rsyslog-relp for a while however it seems that in 5.5 there is a newer version of rsyslog. Does anyone know of a repo where rsyslog-relp exists that is compatible with rsyslog from 5.5 ? thanks

GRUB, and how do I loathe thee

I just adore the install. Esp. of GRUB. Does *anyone* who works on GRUB actually work in the real world, and not only on brand new machines? I just had happen at work what happened last fall on my home system: then, I had /dev/hda, and was trying a clean install on a new SATA drive; right now, I'm installing on a replacement disk on a server that has no CD/DVD drive from a USB key. My options: on my home system, it was MRR on /dev/hda (which was being replaced, and was to become my backup drive), and here, in the MBR of the USB key; in both cases, *only* in the first sector of a partition on the new drive. I am NEVER OFFERED THE OPTION of the MBR of the drive I'm installing to. *snarl* mark "no grub, then linux rescue, then chcon, then grub install... I hope"
