IO Schedulers

Greetings all- I'm on a quest to do some serious tuning to some of my production systems. All are on CentOS 5.x ranging from 5.0 to 5.4. I've been reading up on the various IO schedulers available in the kernel and I'm hoping some of you can lend some insightful suggestions. I typically have three classes of system in production: 1. Storage/DB - Backend nodes for the application servers, MySQL, NFS storage serving to frontend nodes (deadline?) 2. Web/SSL - Frontend nodes serving up web application (PHP/MYSQL), heavy SSL {en/de}cryption with both HTTPS/Apache as well as branch locations connecting via OpenVPN (cfq?) 3. Telephony/Communications - VoIP, usually Asterisk (full signaling + media services), massive context switching, very timing sensitive (Meetme conferencing, IAX2 trunk mode, etc) (deadline?) In my reading, I've found most people recommend deadline for DB intensive systems. CFQ seems to be recommended for most other uses. Noop and as seem to be irrelevant. Is this correct or am I way off base? I'm not currently under any enormous load on any of these systems, but I'm planning for growth and would like to see how different schedulers can make a difference. I welcome your suggestions and experiences. :-) --Tim

Hello All I may have ruffled some feathers with a comment i made earlier about rpmforge. This was posted back on the ML. I have no problems with this either. Here is my issue the simple joy of playing a mp3 on rhythmbox or amarok should not be a test of one's admin skills or repo knowledge to get it to play. But it is, it is always "here read these 2 pages about yum-priorities plugin and repo's" I mean cmon really? There are 2 repo's CentOS Extras and CentOS Plus could this functionality be placed in here ? Where is the repo I read about months ago that was gonna be available for users to submit packages to ? These are all questions that should be getting asked. Another point to make is on the list forums and other places we are seeing a influx of new users, coming from all sorts of other distro's and to make this simple instance so damn hard and having to pull from outside sources or repo's seems silly to me. Should CentOS not provide a simple and easy solution for some of these things ? I mean standard music and movie playback should be an easy one to get. There seems to be some areas where this is taking place for instance I know there is kmods for alot of things, but I am looking at the plain ol home user who wants to listen to music email basic desktop stuff. And yes I know all about the patent encumbered bs that everyone spouts all the time and i today's times this is just a moot point now. Lets face it some of the other distro's are starting to show their true colors and are often too concerned with updates and the latest and greatest packages. Which is breaking more things than anything else. So people are coming to try out CentOS because of the stability and lets face it one of the best and helpful communities out there right now. And yes I know CentOS is mainly known for the RHEL compatibility and more server usage than anything else and that is the main goal, but why can the project not cater to the home user and tinkerer and developer as well ? All in all I should not of called out rpmforge on such a short straw the work they do is excellent and any 3rd party repo you use has the potential to hose a machine no doubt about it. All in all I'm not saying I want Cent to become one of the "other" distros here I'm just saying is there room for improvement ? To make things easier for the average user at home. We see it all the time on the lists and IRC and I'm thinking a more straightforward approach to the situation and keeping some things not all of course, but the simple ones inhouse and in Cent repo's instead of having to go outside the box just for simple things. Oh well all in all this is just my humble opinion and I'm sure I will get ravaged and picked apart at the seams for this but hey that's me so fire away!! -- LostSon http://lostsonsvault.org CentOS - Its not just for servers ya know...

directory permissions

Hi, I have changed directory ownership permissions recursively such that it is owned by username:groupname , where groupname is not the default group, i.e., username. However, when a user creates a new file the default permissions are again username:username. How can I give ownership permissions on a particular directory so that any files created in that directory will always have specifc username:groupname permissions? Also is there any option that would allow only owner to delete files, even though group has rwx permissions? Thanks, CS.

Trip to FOSDEM from London

Hello We are organizing a trip to Brussels for Fosdem in February starting from London. FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Development European Meeting) is a European event centered around Free and Open Source software development. It is aimed at developers and all interested in the Free and Open Source news in the world. Its goals are to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. It is said to be the biggest gathering of Open Source interested people in Europe and the speaker list is quite impressive. We will be leaving London on Friday (5. Feb) evening and returning on Sunday (7. Feb). One of our goals is it to keep the total cost for the weekend under 200 Pounds, which is quite cheep for a weekend in Brussels. Rhythmbox won't play mp3 files

Hi all; I'm actually running RHEL 5.4 I installed the rpmforge centos repo (and disabled it). Then I installed the following: yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdplay libdvdnav lsdvd mplayerplug-in mplayer mplayer-gui compat-libstdc++-33 flash-plugin gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg libquicktime yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install xmms which installed these: xmms gdk-pixbuf glib gtk+ mikmod yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install gstreamer gstreamer gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-tools which installed these: gstreamer-plugins-ugly a52dec amrnb lame libcdio libdvdcss libdvdread libid3tag libmad libsidplay libsndfile mpeg2dec twolame Anyone know what else I need to make rhythmbox recognize/play mp3 files? multipath

Hi. Somehow I do not see any out put using multipath -l or multipath -ll . But I can see using dry run ie multipath -d. Also I do not see /dev/dm-* It was there before. How do I re claim it. Thanks! Paras.

KVM management tools.....

Looking at what my best options for managing KVM via a gui. Running Centos 5.4 and have several machines and want to migrate off of vmware server 2.x. So far it appears that the management tools haven't quite cought up to Vmware but are gaining and closing. I have been looking at convirt, and others. I like what I see in Ovirt but I'm not sure it is available for centos 5.4, or is it? Is there anyone running ovirt in centos? Also, what are folks using for their management tools for KVM, Thanks.....

Strange problem updating machine

Hi Today I updated one machine with CentOS-5.4 (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5) x86_64 (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5450 @ 3.00GHz) to "2.6.18-164.10.1.el5", but in some places, like /boot[1] and in the menu /boot/grub/menu.lst[2], appeared as 2.6.18-164.1.10 - the "1" and the "10" swapped. Did anybody else had similar problems? The update worked fine in i686 workstation and x86_64 xen kernels.
