OT: Google Earth, v.4.3.7284.3916 (beta) on CentOS 5.2 (32 bit)

The version of Google Earth I installed last December was working great this morning. Then, I decided to update to the latest version and when I tried to do that with yum, I didn't have the right name for the package (now, I think it may be "google-earth"), so I downloaded the file (GoogleEarthLinux.bin) and installed with "sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin" The latest version is now installed and I can launch it, without any problem, but, it does not seem to work......... :-) Does anyone have this version of Google Earth working properly on CentOS 5.2 (32 bit)? If so, did you need to do something extra, to get it to work? TIA! (Global/Any) setting for "show hidden files?"

Is there a setting somewhere in the "global" arena of CentOS that controls whether or not "hidden" (.prefixed) files are displayed in file lists? I've noticed that, at home, primarily, when I use any file access dialogue window, particularly in OOo and Evolution, all my "hidden" files are shown along with the "normal" ones. (This used to be true in SeaMonkey also, but there's a way to configure that out and I've activated that, or I'd be seeing them there, too.) I made mention of this on the OOo users list and it was suggested that there might be a "higher" level control involved, but they didn't know what. I occasionally turn on the "View hidden files" option in nautilus, but I always return it to the default (off) setting because, in general, I neither want nor need to see them, which is at least one of the main reasons why _I_ "hide" them, and many are hidden by default. I thought that it might be something to do with installing the 2.4.1 version of OOo with the nautilus option turned on, which I don't know whether I did or not, but that wouldn't affect Evolution as well. LVM not removing LV

I am using RHEL 5.1 with custom kernel. I have a LV I am trying to remove and its keep complaining its open. I have unmounted the filesystem, lsof shows nothing, fuser shows nothing. I am certain a reboot will fix it, but I don't know why this occurs. Can anyone shed some light on this? Are there some other LVM hacks I can use for this? TIA

syslinux and isolinux

Hi I copied the centos 5.2 x86_64 DVD to a USB pen drive formatted for FAT32. I then ran syslinux -sf /dev/sdc1 to get it to boot. I mounted it, and did cp isolinux/vmlinuz . cp isolinux/isolinux.cfg syslinux.cfg the setup the MBR. THe device booted but I got an error message about unknown command in the syslinux.cfg file. Isnt syslinux and isolinux compatible - they are in the same package? All these commands below look correct. Did I do something wrong trying to get a USB pen drive to boot to install linux from. Missing fonts for tightvnc

You would think installing via yum would handle dependencies, but perhaps fonts are not managed like dependencies..... Anyway, I installed tightvnc to test out its IPv6 support. Installed ok (after I erased regular vnc). But when I tried to start it, I got 5 warnings about: Font directory '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc' not found - ignoring (then the same message for Speedo, Type1, 75dpi, and 100dpi). Then a fatel server error about: could not open default fount 'fixed' So I looked in the repos (curtesy of yumex) and did find a few 75dpi a 100dpi fonts, but there seemed to be a lot of these two. I installed a ocuple of them and tried again. Got the same errors. So how do I fix this one?

Problems with perl upgrading CentOS 5.1 to 5.2

Hi, I'm having problems with perl. I'm receivings this e-mails from logwatch everyday and appears to be a problem with perl. I explain a bit before expose the errors that I received: I tried to download all perl* packages, uninstall the repeated ones and reinstall all packages where installed. I need some help to try to solve this problem, because is a production server and I can't uninstall many working packages that depends on perl* ones. I read about similar problem in CentOS forums, with no sucess. Many thanks to all!!! Being as a Windows geek tho, I consider Linux as a more powerful server operating system than Windows. When I saw OS comparison at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/linux/server-security.mspx I was shocked! Showed it to a friend and he felt like being brainwashed :D lol. What do you fellows think about this? Thanks.
