Amanda oddity (amcheck)

I'm slowly getting everything back to normal here after swapping motherboards on my server. I also took the opportunity to bring the server up to CentOS 5. I'm still getting services working but I have one oddity with amanda. Ever since I upgraded the server to CentOS 5, amcheck dies and gives me a backtrace if there are no available tapes. amcheck works fine if the expected next tape is in my tape changer. Worth upgrading desktop to 5.1?

I am using CentOS 5.0 on my desktop workstation. Are there any deeply compelling reasons to upgrade to version 5.1? I read through the release notes but didn't see any whiz-bang new features. Perhaps some of you can share your personal experience letting us know if you have noticed any differences, etc.

Hot swapping sata drives

I have a two external USB drives only 1 is connected to centos 5.1 at a time. the USB drive is SLOW compared to SATA. The external drive suppots both connections USB and SATA. I bought a little $5 external SATA connector that goes into the PCI slot area (does not actually take a PCI slot just the backpanel) and just plugs back into one of the available SATA ports on the motherboard. When I turn off the external drive and put the other drive on the connection and then power on will SATA handle that automatically? Is there a command I need to run to tell it check for new disks? Is this possible? Will I have to reboot to get the swapped external disk detected. jerry

HA software advice

We are in need of some very basic software that will give us the ability to swing an ip address from one host to another during controlled maintenance or host failure. For now the IP address will be the only resource that is shared and there will never be a need for shared storage. Eventually we may want to monitor processes for health (probably just read in pid file) and it would be great if the recommended software had this ability as well but not completely necessary. The process monitoring part is just me trying to think ahead but it definitely wouldn't be needed in the near future. Ideally, this should be light weight user land code that hopefully already comes easily with the distribution :) Any suggestions? Thanks.

limiting cron's capability?

Had to POWER OFF CentOS 5.1!

Wireless DELL M90 with CentOS 5.1

Hi, I have a laptop DELL M90 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card. After installed new rpm drivers (see below), my card is recognized and I can see my wireless acces point with (iwlist - iwconfig) but it's impossible to connect to it. It seem that I can't obtain an IP address. In the log message I have "dhclient : DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval ) The same laptop installed in Windows XP connect imediatly to my wireless acces point. Other Windows XP laptops can connect immediatly so. My laptop is installed with CentOS 5.1 - kernel 2.6.18-53.el5 Any help ? Best Regards. Automount of USB drives

Hi, I am using 5.1, Until yesterday morning when we had a power cut for 9 hours [no proper UPS], the automount of USB drives worked properly. Now when I connect any USB drive [hard drives & USB sticks], they show up in dmesg, and they are being properly recognized, but I have to mount them by hand. MySQL and charsets: latin1 vs. utf8

Hi, Our public library management software (PMB) is currently running on a Slackware Linux 12.0 server, with Apache, PHP, MySQL and a few PHP modules. I'm considering migrating it to CentOS 5.1, because it would be easier to maintain for updates, and for various other reasons. Slackware is one of the rare distros that does not default to an utf8 system locale. The default is en_US, and since I use a french system, I chose fr_FR@euro for localization. There's a caveat in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh, justifying the choice of latin1 over utf8, so I complied to that. When working with PMB, I often go under the hood, open up a MySQL console and isse SQL statements from there. The app itself seems to favour latin1 over utf8. For example, when doing a backup database dump, the resulting dumpfile will be iso-8859-1. Now, as expected, I'm having some charset woes with CentOS. I've re-read the MySQL Reference Manual, the section concerning localization, which leaves me more confused than before. Asked in the forums there, but to no avail. So my next thought was to ask here. We only use french charset here, nothing else, so there's no need for utf8-support in our database. Only I noticed that when I set the system locale to french latin1, I get some weird results in the system messages. Is there any way to keep the system in utf8, and at the same time make MySQL behave like it was latin1-only? I don't quite know how to formulate it, so I'll try to give a description of what I would like to have. - My system is still defaulting to LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 - SQL batch files are all ISO-8859-1 - I want to open GNOME Terminal, fire up the MySQL monitor, run the batchfile ( mysql> source /path/to/batchfile.sql) and then be able to issue sql statements with table contents (french special chars like é, à , ç, è) displaying correctly. Any suggestion for this? Niki PS: encoding issues are a quite humiliating experience
