backups and md5 all in one while splitting

I'm trying to back up our svn repositories, and I found a nice little backup command line bzip's the backup and creates the md5 hash all in one: svnadmin dump --deltas /repo |bzip2 |tee dump.bz2 | md5sum >dump.md5 The problem is I need to split the backups, so this doesn't really work. Is there perhaps another way of piping things to allow for splitting of the backups? Currently I'm doing something like this svnadmin dump --deltas /repo |bzip2 |split - -b 64m cat *.bz2* | md5sum >dump.md5 Is there a way to do this all in one step? Russ

heartbeat 1.2.5 on CentOS 5?

Hello, Has anyone got Heartbeat 1.2.5 (latest Heartbeat 1 version) to compile and run on CentOS 5? I downloaded the source but hit difficulties compiling it, presumebly because it was never quite tweaked to run on the latest version. Thanks, --Amos

mp3 plugin for Rythmbox or Totem?

Can anybody please suggest a suitable plugin to enable playing of mp3 files with either Totem or Rythmbox. Both of these come as part of the CentOS 5 package, but strangely neither has the necessary plugin for mp3, which surely is a common enough format in the music world? Thanks, Andy

SSH question

On my logwatch that I have emailed to me, I see a line where I'm showed logging in via a known ip address, and when I log in from my laptop through my EV-DO card wirelessly, the computer show log in as ok, but it can not translate the ip from the aircard and marks the log in as a possible hack attempt. repo location for gnome package manager

Where does the package manager in gnome look for its repos? I have my local repos, and of course I want to get packages from there. I have set up yum to use them, but cannot see how the package manager is configured.

NOSSO(r) compression

I just downloaded solaris. They have two versions, the split DVD that comes with two 1.2GB zipped chunks and an exe which is 1.2GB but uncompresses to the full 2.5+GB. I found some info on them here: http://www.nosltd.com/nosso.html Any idea how they achieve such great compression? Looks like they're using a proprietary algorithm and don't offer any downloads. Also looks like it's windows only. Is there a linux/open source alternative out there? Russ

IO load takes IO wait into it's calculation, so it may be a writer process hammering the disks which are under powered for the IO load. This seems to happen once a week or so on a few different servers (all running in a similar application). I've never seen the 1 minute sample spike as high as the 5 or 15 minute samples. Seeing as that last value is a 15 minute period, well, it doesn't seem possible that one can have a 500+ 15 minute sample without having observed a spike in the 5 minute sample at least 5 minutes before. Also, there aren't 500+ processes on these systems -- it's typically around 100 total processes (ps auxw | wc -l). (Is there a way to see the total count of kernel-level threads?) Install CentOS based distro

Hi, I'm making a dedicated distribution based on CentOS 5.1 My doubt is about the installation of the "new" distro. I was thinking about a (K)ubuntu kind of way: the CD/DVD boots, a graphical interface appears with an "Install" button, just a click on it and then just wait to finish. Now, I'd like to avoid building RPMs for my added software. Is this possible this way ? Other suggestions are welcome. Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito
