Clone physical into virtual

Is there a formal, or preferred, method for importing a physical CentOS machine into a VMware instance? I know they make software to move Windows machines, but I couldn't find one to handle our CentOS servers. I have done something via scp/sftp in the past, which *seemed* to work, but if there's a better way I'm more than interested in hearing the process. Thanks! Scott

Opposite of cp -u

I had at one point copied a large number of files between drives and did not use the -p and thus the timestamps were all set to the date of the copy. I did not catch this, and deleted the source. So I 'lived' with it and have since changed many files. Well, yesterday I found a good backup of many of those files and I want to restore them to their proper dates. cp -p -u is exactly the opposite of what I want. I want to copy only if the source files have an earlier date than the destination files. The source files are just an old copy on another drive that I found when cleaning up things...

I need to also mention that this server will be the only server in this domain, so there will NOT be any Microsoft servers here. The Microsoft solution for the this function is too expensive, so we want to install centOS5 and configure the centOS5 server as the primary file and print server. The user PCs are Microsoft windows.(w2K & WXP). Are there some comprehensive "how too's" on how the setup the domain, etc. and what needs to be done with a network of windows clients and linux server? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Phil, I think I'll use RPMforge - the only thing is, I'm a bit confused about how I should install the rpm. Do I use yum - I think I have to modify something to get yum to access the right repository don't I? Or do I just download the appropriate rpm from RPMforge and install using rpm on the command line? Also, do I need to install anything else (module dependencies?) or will yum or rpm take care of that? I have successfully used both the RPMforge and ATrpms packages for IPW2200 on my laptop. If you are using packages from either repo already, sticking with that one is probably the best bet. If using both or neither, depends on whether you want to go with Axel's (ATrpms) kmdl approach (may have to wait for him to build new packages after a new kernel arrives) or with Dag's (RPMforge) dkms approach (rebuilds kernel modules on-the-fly - requires development environment to be present). Either is likely to be less complicated than trying to use the tarball, and both have the advantage of having the package manager handle updates to new firmware or drivers. I think you can find stuff with Google, for some WinModems, to get them to work on Linux.. As other posters pointed out, these are not true modems and normally require MS Windows to work. Inexpensive junk, installed into new low end boxes for end users. As another poster pointed out, an External Serial Modem will do the trick for you. I believe *any* External Serial Modem will work on Linux, but, I'm not positive of that. Lanny

RHEL5 and CentOS 5 root logins

I found, under a 64-bit CentOS 5 workstation install, it is possible to modify /etc/inittab and add a couple of lines to prevent root from logging into the console. I found, under a 64-bit RHEL 5 server install, adding the same two lines completely breaks the OS, to the point that a reboot after the lines are added, the OS brings you to a fsck-like prompt, and other things break, too. I didn't have time to look at the logs for specifics, if any were recorded. Does anyone know if a CentOS 5 server install option permits locking out root from console login? Does anyone know of a way, in RHEL 5 Server edition, to prevent root from a console login? Thanks. Scott

I have a modem in my system that comes up with this in lspci: 01:07.0 Communication controller: Agere Systems 56k WinModem (rev 01) What programs under CentOS, if any, can use this modem and how? Thanks. mhr
