New CentOS DNS Server woes

Hi folks, I've put my new DNS server in place, told the primary that this IP would be pulling zones and restarted BIND on the primary. I configured my named.conf file to pull zones from the primary, started BIND on the new box. Here's where I get confused ++++++++++++++++++++++++ [root@sunspot etc]# /etc/init.d/named status number of zones: 169 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running +++++++++++++++++++++++ So the new BIND sees the conf file and recognizes that there are 169 zones (test group) to pull. nothing comes over. I tailed the /var/log/messages and I see about 169 <g> of these: Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: dumping master file: /var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves/tmp-sTsIWElBLR: open: file not found and these Aug 5 14:10:08 sunspot named[5263]: transfer of 'jemsites.com/IN' from 64.135.16.10#53: failed while receiving responses: file not found I think this must be a permissions issue. (btw, SELinux is in Permissive mode at the moment). TIA for any comments or suggestions. ~Ray

During my very brief fling with FC6, I found that system-config-display did not update xorg11.config (that's not the correct file name), as it claimed to be doing. As you know, it is always best to either use the GUI tools or do it by hand. Not good to mix the two methods. My impression from reading this ML is that you will find CentOS performs for you just as well as RHEL would and probably you will get better support, on this ML, than you would from RH for RHEL, unless you are in the super customer group at RH.

Turning off a notebook's screen

My notebook is an HP Compaq nc4010 running current Centos 5.0 with the Gnome desktop. I have been having problems with my notebook's screen never really going off. I lock my screen and the backlight stays on. I push the close monitor button, or even close the unit, the backlight turns off for maybe 10 seconds then turns back on. Actually I just did a test again, and when I push the notebook closed button (that little microswitch that gets toggled when the unit is closed), the monitor turns off completely, then the backlight comes on, then the screen goes into some sort of barely lit mode (brighter). Even the attack VGA monitor does the same thing. But at least I can turn that off independently when I want to lock my system. Oh, I did not have this problem in Centos 4.x. I think this is tied into the screensaver function. I have selected 'Blank screen' theme in Preferences > Screensaver. thanks for any pointers.

Power burn test

I need a program that will just run everything at max so I can measure the max power used on some systems. My 'Kill a Watt' meter should show up early next week. SO run that CPU at max, using all memory, and keeping the harddrive spinning. I can jsut do pings on the lan card for it to stay awake. I have searched here and on the net and have come back with nothing.

CentOS vs RedHat packages

Hello Once Again: Another learning experience question - it is my understanding that CentOS essentially IS RedHat but with any commercial connection removed. That being said, is there any difference in the included, or quality of packages between the two distros? I've got some basic issues with a critical server I'm about to set up, and if I cannot get beyond said issues, I may opt to try CentOS. Seeing that CentOS is free (can't call RedHat for support), I'm wondering if I should try and make the case for CentOS over RedHat. Once the choice is made, it may be next to impossible to revert to the other version (RH vs CentOS). Thanks for your insights. Scott

How to replace ntfs by ntfs-3g?

Hello, I can write to an ntfs partion if mounting it by hand with 'mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdf5 /mnt/xp'. But if I use the mount option from the kde Storage Media panel applet (kdebase-3.5.4-13.6.el5.centos) then the partion will be mounted without write support. So how to say kde and CentOS to use ntfs-3g and not ntfs? Maybe by changing some links? Thank you very much. regards Olaf

Lamar: I found a very easy way to do it. I found that for CentOS 4.4, I could install the kdeedu RPM, from the Fedora Core 3 Install DVD, without any problem. And for CentOS 5.0, I installed kdeedu from the FC6 install DVD. That installed a lot of other stuff too.... Thank you for posting! KStars is both powerful and elegant. I am going to put FC7 on my daughters box and let my wife try the latest KStars there. Lanny
