CentOS 3.9's up2date missing sources???

CentOS3.9 Users: After applying all Updates to Upgrade from CentOS 3.8 CentOS 3.9 I find up2date no longer works "correctly" (or shall I say NOT as before)... Missing is the "sources" File!!! typo on a Wiki page

I don't know the correct way to get this into the system, so I'm posting here. On this page: http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities a line begins: Some packages specify obsoletes in their metadata. This property of a packages that should be "This property of a package" not packages, singular. An incredibly minor error, on an extremely helpful Wiki page. Lanny

Higher memory requirements for 64 bit?

I have a dual Xeon 3.2GHz XDMCP server serving out about 50 Gnome desktops to thin clients. I currently am running 32 bit with 4GB of memory. Performance is fine, normally, and the machine runs with about 3GB in swap. However, if a user app suddenly sucks up the maximum allowed rss and virtual or 256MB/process as specified by ulimit, the resulting swap drags the machine down to the point that people think it is locked up. I have another 4GB of memory on order. But I suspect that part of the problem may be running out of memory in zone-normal, which I know will cause swap storms. (An oops in the log file suggests that is where memory was tight.) I had low memory protection set to 150MB, and have increased that to 256MB. (I had to increase it to at least 135MB previously, else dd if=/dev/zero of=/tempfile.tmp would start a swap storm that would bring the machine to its knees.) More users will be added to this machine, and I am worried about having an ever higher percentage of this (16GB maximum) machine in zone high. So I am considering moving it from 32 bit CentOS4 to 64 bit CentOS5 or 64 bit Fedora 7. But a cursory test of the 32 and 64 bit versions of firefox suggest to me that, just opening them up and going to google.com, the 64 bit version uses about 50% more memory than the 32 bit version. Could someone please comment on how much of an additional memory hit I might expect? The VM risks and benefits that I might be taking? Really, *any* commentary about this scenario would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve Bergman

4gb ram shows as 3.3gb

Hi, Running Centos 5 (32bit)... running a server with 4gb of RAM and it's shows up as: [root@ubercore1 ~]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3369544 2549668 819876 0 29008 2382360 -/+ buffers/cache: 138300 3231244 Swap: 6291448 0 6291448 I know 4gb is the limit for a 32bit OS but i thought it would be able to use all of it? Is there another kernel i was supposed to install? --N

Centos as a desktop, advisable?

Hello, I would like to deploy centos on hundreds of client PC (a new setup). Presently, several distros has attract me due to their focus on the desktop, however they only have few months lifetime before a new version released. Is it advisable using centos on client? what about support for new hardware and several office productivity software like openoffice, did centos always update to the latest version? Previously i was using RH9 on several hundreds clients and love it, however the update was horrible since it is unsupported, hence I can not install it on the new hardware (ie. sata) thanks. --beast

rpms for 32 bit

Thanks Johnny, I dont think there is Internet access on the boxes I have to deal with. What I am trying to get to grips with is the problems described here: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/eserver/library/es-rhel-coexist/ Although actually the hardware is different and I will be using centos 4.0 I guess I need Legacy, Compatibility ARCH Development Support 8 Legacy Software Development 5 Compatibility ARCH Development Support 191 But I dont know which rpms are in these 3 groups, I will only have remote text based access and if I had a list of these rpms I could do a rpm -q to see if they were installed. (maybe these are in a packing list or xml file somewhere?) Also I recall doing some similar application install on 32 bit hardware with Centos 4.0 which meant I had to install some (32 bit) compat libs cos the app was expecting to run on Centos 3.0. So now I might need to install, with ssh/scp, rpms for 32 bit compatability and also 4.0/3.0 compatability. Probably the easiest way is to first make sure you have a .rpmmacros file (in at least root's home directory, also any users that you routinely use to solve dep issues) ... in that file, put this line: %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} That will make all rpm queries show you the $ARCH of the RPMS ... Then, you should be able to bring the file in question onto the machine and do: yum localinstall <filename> ---OR--- If the packages are in the x86_64 repos now, just: yum install <name>.i386 There are some i386 packages inside the x86_64 tree, if you are trying to run others (specifically from 3rd party repos) then you are going to have issues if you try to install the i386 and x86_64 programs at the same time because of shared files (files that exist in both the i386 and x86_64 repos). Most of these shared files are in /usr/share/doc or /etc .. though, maybe also /usr/include and others. The way shared files work is that the shared file MUST have the same md5sum on both $ARCHs (i386 and x86_64) ... which for doc files that are generated via texinfo or other things is quite hard to accomplish. You can minimize shared file problems by installing all i386 duplicate packages with this option: rpm -Uvh --excludedocs <package> This is quite a PITA because you loose the ability to use yum for installs or updates. You could also use the "tsflags=excludedocs" in your /etc/yum.conf file ... but then you get no documentation from any i386 OR x86_64 packages that you install. Either way ... running 32bit packages on x86_64 machines is a royal PITA, and I would recommend that you use a 32bit OS where you know you will need 32bit packages if at all possible.
