I also know, for a fact, that a large percentage of the people that read a wiki ignore that when something goes wrong and go straight to the source. I've seen it far too many times. I've seen the "Well, your information is wrong. You said this." "No I didn't." "Yes you did. Look at your wiki." "No I didn't. Look at the revision history. Someone else did." "It's your posting, you're responsible, so it's your fault and your information is wrong." You might be surprised how few people even care who said what. They hold the original author responsible. No thanks. I don't need that drama. This started out as a project solely for my own use. Nothing more and nothing less. It morphed to what it is today because I didn't see anything like it out on the 'Net at the time. At the end of the day, it has my name on it, so it's my heartburn if someone marks it up and it's wrong. If people don't want it because of my chosen distribution method, that's fine by me. what is extra/ updates/ and weak-updates/ under /lib/modules/<kernel>/ directories?

Hi, there are three 'extra' directories under /lib/modules/<kernel>/ directories for each kernel version. Any one can explain what is the real functions for these three directories, and how to use them correctly? I found a document talks a little about it at http://linux.dell.com/files/presentations/Red_Hat_Summit_May_2006/Driver_Up…, but would like to know more real alive examples to see how I can really use the kernel driver update mechanism. Error on sound files with totem removed

I decided to go ahead and remove totem (don't much care for it anyway), and when I double-click a sound file in nautilus, it runs mplayer to play the file, but I also get an error window (from mplayer) that says "[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy" but it is playing the sound file just fine. I can close the error window and everything works; if I close mplayer instead, both mplayer and the error window disappear. Yum (dependency) problem on latest 4.5 updates

Hi! running a Centos 4.5 system here. I've just install centos 5.0 on new PC. However it gives this error while installing per-Date-Calc: [root@piranha tmp]# perl -ivh perl-Date-Calc-5.4-1.2.2.1.i386.rpm Unrecognized character \xED at perl-Date-Calc-5.4-1.2.2.1.i386.rpm line 1. what could be the problem? --beast

NFS v4

Hello all, Do you guys use NFS v4 in production? Is the Linux implementation ready enough? The feeling I'm getting by looking at RH doc and other web sites is that v4 was added in a hurry and is not mainstream yet. I don't want to use something too cutting edge that will break down the road. Is that the case? In my case, it would be a CentOS5 server with CentOS4 client. Thanks, -- Francois Caen

CentOS 5 problem with 2xRocketRaid 2220

Hi! I have an supermicro storage server http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/932/SC932T-R760.cfm with two RocketRaid 2220. my problem is that at install a looong time is spent on detecting some ataxx in order to end in ATA[0-15].00 : Failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4) for each channel from 16 it can take some 15-20 s. the same happens at boot time (which can take some 4-5 min). Is there a way to avoid this? Thank you for any help, Best regards, Adrian

Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5

Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: check pass; user unknown May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=localhost.localdomain which seems to indicate that it cannot find the user in the directory. CentOS 5 Issues Booting Under VMWare

Hi, VMWare has been a great tool for me to experiment with CentOS 3 and CentOS 4. However, I'm running into issues with CentOS 5. First, it is *extremely* slow to boot (as in it takes over an hour to boot CentOS 5 on a machine that boots CentOS 3 & 4 in less than one minute). Then, after an hour of slowly watching the messages go by on the console and the CPU of the host machine pegged at 100%, I get this error: VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) NOT_REACHED F(562):1742 A log file is available in ... I have done a "minimal install" of CentOS 5 (all checkboxes in the category/task selection screen are unchecked -- so to X-Windows involved) and the virtual machine has 750MB of RAM. I'm using VMWare Workstation 4.5 and the host OS is Windows XP Pro. I have not been able to install the VMWare tool since I can't get it to finish booting. Has anyone else run into this? I have seen some discussion on the list about VMWare and CentOS 5, but nothing that seemed to match what I'm running into. Thanks, Kennedy

CentOS 4.5 FTP install

I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.5 to install via FTP. I have a local FTP server with a mirror of 4/os/i386. I boot from the first CentOS 4.5 CD and enter 'linux askmethod'. I choose the FTP installation method and DHCP for the IP configuration. At the FTP Setup screen I enter the IP address of my server and the path of the i386 directory. Selecting OK there takes me to the CD Found screen that asks if I want to perform a media test. Skipping the media test takes me back to the FTP Setup screen. (Performing the media test shows that my CD is OK, and then takes me back to the FTP Setup screen.) All I can do now is bounce between the FTP Setup and CD Found screens. My FTP server log shows an attempt to fetch CentOS/base/product.img, which doesn't exist. Any idea what's going on here? Ron
