CentOS 5 beta upgrade path

How hard would it be to upgrade from CentOs 5 beta to the released version? Would it be as simple as a yum upgrade or would I have to upgrade via booting from cd/dvd/pxe ? Pardon my ignorance if this has been asked already -Eric

Help with fdformat

At: http://www.serverelements.com/naslite.php the following command is supplied near the bottom: **fdformat /dev/fd0u1722 ** I have plugged in my USB floppy drive and have a /media/floppy I get no such file or directory with this command. And what is this with a 1722 formatted floppy. What I do a man fdformat, 1722 is not listed....

How to resolve an up2date package conflict?

Hi, At present I'm setting up several CentOS (4 and 4.4) machines, and in the process of installing the several updates that are automatically mentioned by up2date as being available, I'm running into a package conflict. More particular, when trying to install several of the C compiler related packages (like gcc, cpp, etc.) I get the error message: "Test install failed because of package conflicts: The following packages were added to your selection to satisfy dependencies: (name) libtool (version) 1.5.6 (release) 4.EL4.c4.4 package libtool-1.5.6-4.EL4.1.c4.4 is already installed" Now.... this seems to be somewhat of what we call over here a "chicken-and-egg-problem", IOW, in order to resolve it libtool should be added, yet when adding it, libtool is already installed and causes the conflict; so which to solve first :P Can anyone let me know how I can manually solve this problem (note that libtool was not offered as a selectable package, but rather is enforced when trying to install e.g. gcc)? CentOS 5 Minimal Install

Performing a test install of CentOS 5, I no longer have the capability of requesting a minimal install as their was in CentOS 4. Is there any possibility this could added back in before final release? Thank you, Brett

Wait for 5 or just use 4.4?

I'm a relative newbie to all this so pardon me if the following are all stupid questions. Firstly, I'm setting up a web server and gone from planning to use Ubuntu (due to some familiarity as a desktop at home) to CentOS based on recommendations by experienced webhosters. However now that I looked into CentOS, I find myself at a point where it's transitting to a major new version. So the key question for me is, should I wait for CentOS 5 to be released or just go for 4.4? Being rather new to Linux, my attempts to try to figure out the differences between the two has been rather futile since I can't readily tell what is really important to me or not. All that I think I'm sure of now is that 5 would support virtualization using Xen and 4.4 doesn't have it. This alone is food for thought since the idea of being able to compartalize each website in their own VM sounds good in the long run. I'm tempted to wait for 5 since I'm reluctant to run the risk of having to upgrade a live server to version 5 and have it failed specutacularly if I screw it up. On the other hand, it's uncertain when 5 will be out and definitely waiting more than another 2 weeks isn't quite acceptable without compelling reasons. Hence I'll appreciate it if the knowledgeable folks on this mailing list can advise which is the wiser route to go. Some additional information which may be relevant to the decision. 1. RAID : Was planning to run "hardware" RAID 1 on the server and has noted comments that software RAID 1 on Linux may be better than raid 1 using onboard firmware controllers. 2. Software that would be running on the server would include Apache 2.xwith ASPx support, php 5.x, MySQL 5.x, Exim, ProFTPD, Direct Admin (supposed to be developed on RH and one user apparently tested it to work right out of the box with 5 Beta, part of the reason why I decided to go with CentOS) 3. Hardware to be used would be Intel Core 2 Duo on an Asus P5B-VM-D0 (Q965, ICH8-D0, Intel GMA3000 GPU) with SATA hard disks. 4. Network bandwidth control based on request IP or domains (i.e. connections to IP #1 can be limited to 512Kbps, while connections to IP #2 can be limited to 1024Kbps, or connections to www.domainA.com is limited to 256Kbps etc. Thanks!

Missing samba binaries

I went to enable samba on my home machine, which has a largely plain vanilla install of CentOS 4.4 Plus, and the smbd and nmbd files are missing. As you may know, this makes it rather difficult to run samba. For some reason, the winbindd binary is present, and rpm reports: samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.11 samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.11 as present. So how do I retrieve the missing samba binaries/ Do I remove and reinstall the packages, or do I rebuild the latest samba from source, or . . . ??? Thanks. Centos 4.92

I'm looking at the first ISO image (I only have two so far), and I don't see instructions a repo for preparing for a network install. It used to be basically copy all the RedHat/Fedora/CentOS directories to a common location. Then one booted from the network, CD or whatever and gor right into it. The last part I'm sure is substantially the same as before, but we do need a new recipe for creating the repo. snmp on centos 3.x x86_64

I'm trying to use opennms to collect data from some CentOS3.x x86_64 boxes but I am getting an error "Integer too large: cannot decode" that http://bugzilla.opennms.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1316 says is a bug in net-snmp that was fixed in a later version. However, when I try to build the 5.4.1 src.rpm from sourceforge I get "/usr/lib/libpopt.so: could not read symbols: Invalid operation" although it builds OK on a 32 bit system. Has anyone worked around this problem? Or is it really a bug in opennms? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

kernel-devel rpm

Hello, I'm trying to install VirtualBox on a test CentOS 4.4 system following the guide on howtoforge. As a preliminary i'm trying to retrieve the kernel-devel rpm, which contains the headers and libs needed to compile kernel modules. I've tried: yum install kernel-devel as well as added an arch to that in this case i686 and i keep getting the msg nothing to do. The only item i can think of is i have enabled the protectbase yum plugin, if this is my problem i'd like to make this file an exception. My kernel version is 2.6.9, the default one that came with CentOS if that matters. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks. Dave.

Beta question - initial install of packages

When I used Fedora Core 5, and got to the screen for packages to install, I had the option to Customize which packages I wanted to install, but never an option to install EVERYTHING. That annoyed me. When I use Redhat Enterprise 4, and get to the screen for packages to install, I have the option to Customize which packages I want to install. That leads me to a screen showing a tree of catatories. Towards the bottom, I find an "Everything" option. I almost always choose that. When I learned about CentOS 4.4, and got to the package install screen, the EVERYTHING option was there. I was thrilled! >From the CentOS beta, I thought I would again get the EVERYTHING option, but to my shock, the packages screen actually goes back to the FC5 days, thus no easy (that I could find) way to just select all packages. Am I missing something? If this is true, and the team is still in development stage, can the EVERYTHING option be restored? Thanks. Scott
