Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5

Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to consider an upgrade. My machine right now is running great. Everything is just how I like it. Enhanced desktop search would be nice (but then I thought Beagle was Mono and thus not included). As would a nicer version of Gnome. But I'm just not sure if the jump is big enough to make it worth it. Anyone know? I'm getting that upgrade itch that comes from back in the days when I upgraded SuSE, Mandrake, Red Hat, Fedora, etc. every 6 months. Having a machine running solid for 2 years is weird for me and I'm getting that itch, but I'm wondering if there isn't any solid reason to bother with it. Preston

How to limit a user to access a few sites.

Hi , I am now running squid with ncsa_auth. I have bound ip addresses to usernames. So users now can access Internet from their ips. Now I want a few users to prevent from accessing all the sites. But Instead, I want them to allow to access a few sites scuh as google.com,cnn.com, bbc.com. I want to limit in that way. I have wriiten below rules. But those users still can access all the sites. external_acl_type ip_user %SRC %LOGIN %DST /usr/lib/squid/ip_user_check -f /etc/squid/ip.conf acl ncsa_users proxy_auth REQUIRED acl ip_users external ip_user %SRC %LOGIN %DST http_access deny !ncsa_users http_access deny !ip_users http_access allow ip_users http_access allow ncsa_users my ip.conf file is like this. [root@worldnet squid]# cat /etc/squid/ip.conf 192.168.101.25 indunil .google.com .bbc.com .cnn.com 192.168.101.90 www90 Accoring to the above file, User indunil with ip address 192.168.101.25 has access to google.com,bbc.com and cnn.com. New System Build

Here is what I've ordered for the new system: Case: Antec TX1050B, Mid-Tower Server Case MoBo: Intel D945GCL CPU: Intel Pentium-4 631 RAM: Aeneon 512 Mb 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM - DDR2 667 Disk: Hitachi 80 Gb SATA 3G Carrier: Vantec MRK-200ST-BK DVD: got one on the shelf I'm going to try Floppy: Sony MPF920-Z-121 My intention is to load CentOS-4 complete and use the system as a development/backup box. SCSI, SAS and FC Controller

Greetings, Currently, we have several Direct Attached Storage (DAS) units, connected to respective servers through Adaptec SCSI Controller. 1) Most of the time we used 80Mbit/s for external SCSI devices (in this case, the DAS itself). Is it true the maximum speed for external SCSI devices would be up to 80Mbit/s? Tried to change to 320Mbit/s but somehow the kernel crashed. Is there any specific reason why some (or all) external devices can only go up to 80Mbit/s? 2) We were thinking to use SAS or FC HBA for our next DAS but I'm not sure which brand/card does has the support in CentOS/Linux in terms of kernel module/driver,compatibility and performance. Can anyone give suggestions based on their experience? TIA. -Ikmal

Disabling selinux at boot command prompt

I noticed in 4.92 there is no disabling selinux at install. It is now a firstboot option which then requires a reboot. Is there anyway to disable selinux at the boot install prompt so after the firstboot screens it wont reboot again? I presently install with "linux askmethod" so I can select NFS install. Installing centos in a Compaq ML350 G5

We bought a Compaq ML350 G5. When trying to install Centos, I got the message: No disk installed. and centos suggest me a list of drivers, but none of them seems to work. Has anybody tried this? Any help would be appreciated. carlos

Cannot execute /usr/bin/fetchmail

Hello everyone, I'm setting up a fetchmail command to run every five minutes so I can get email from another POP3 account. The fetchmail package was installed via yum. I can execute the command manually on the command line. But I'm having trouble when it's run from cron. I have noticed that commands run via cron and execute via /bin/sh, so I tried to run the fetchmail command manually. This is what I get: [root@scalix ~]# /bin/sh /usr/bin/fetchmail /usr/bin/fetchmail: /usr/bin/fetchmail: cannot execute binary file What could be the problem here? Anyone else having problems with fetchmail? -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Stay with the ancient Tao, Move with the present.

Network freezes - possibly yum?

Hi. I have a CentOS 4.2 server running. I've just experience that it stops responding (http, ssh) when doing yum update pam xorg-x11 gnupg This has happened two times in a row, so I'm curious if anyone has experienced anything like this? Could it be yum or should I look for the explanation elsewhere? [root@machine ~]# yum update pam xorg-x11 gnupg Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories update 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 base 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 addons 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 Reading repository metadata in from local files And here everything stops. Any tips on troubleshooting?
