very new user having problems

I just loaded CentOS and want to connect to the internet using a radio and wireless internet. I got some numbers from the internet provider. He walked me through some of the changes in the networking area. But it did not work. I have read three books on Unix and I am determined to do this. but I think I need lots of help. Where could I look this up on a windows machine?? when I get connected to the net, then I have another question about how to make the jave download operational. thank you

No sound after upgrade to 4.4

After upgrading from CentOS 4.3 to 4.4 the sound doesn't work anymore. Messages like the following appear in dmesg when I try to use it: application firefox-bin uses obsolete OSS audio interface The output from 'lsmod | snd' is: snd_azx 21713 2 snd_hda_codec 121665 1 snd_azx snd_pcm_oss 52729 0 snd_mixer_oss 21953 2 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 92357 3 snd_azx,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 28229 1 snd_pcm snd 57509 8 snd_azx,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 13089 2 snd snd_page_alloc 13897 2 snd_azx,snd_pcm The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 and the soundcard in on-board. DNS resolve.conf not working

Hi All: After upgrading to 4.4 my server(s) will not resolve using the servers listed in resolve.conf. This is not true of a server running a DNS Cache server. I can do a netstat -e and show a connection to the DNS servers but it will not resolve any domain names (please see below). Any thoughts? futex hang workaround by rebooting first (?)

The previously noted upgrade-to-4.4 recipe: yum update yum sqlite python-sqlite ; yum update worked more consistently than running "yum upgrade," but it too fell victim to the futex hang. In my limited testing, a reboot of the machine before starting the upgrade gave me a 100% success rate. Given two identical machines, one that had been used for a few days and one that was freshly rebooted, the former would exhibit a futex hang, while the latter updated just fine. Cheers, Zube

remote file access,

I need to access my mail boxes from two desktops on a local network, windows and CentOS. Ideas of what would be most appropriate are received with thanks? Maybe set up an nfs export on the CentOS server? Thanks Kai

Another odd postfix issue related to 4.4 update

Postfix appears to be running normally and is accepting/receiving mail as usual, but... I'm seeing lines like this in the message log: Sep 1 06:55:23 fender postfix/smtpd[11969]: sql_select option missing Sep 1 06:55:23 fender postfix/smtpd[11969]: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available Those seem to be sasl related, right? I'm not using sasl support (yet). Any clues to this behaviour would be much appreciated. Cheers, Chris

This appears to be an upstream issue but everyone is quiet on the issue. For now I recommend that you uninstall galeon before using yum upgrade. mozilla and seamonkey not the same

I have searched the bugzilla and seamonkey has bugs when using "-remote openurl(www.google.com)" it always opens a new window. Mozilla did not have this problem. How can I continue to use the old mozilla? Both for system updates and for new 4.4 installs. I need the -remote functionality to not open new windows. Thanks, Jerry

My 4.4 upgrades

My update method on two critical systems has been to use yumex. I select all, unselect major apps that I recognize (bind, openssh, etc), update and reboot. The yumex to get those apps and another reboot (most likely not needed). I have updated my notebook. The only detected problems are: madwifi drivers and lost Thunderbird icons in drawers (just had to go through the properties and reselect the icon). Too soon to tell about anything deeper.... One server so far. This is a new box that I built only a couple weeks ago. Update went fine. I am now taring up the system as a checkpoint before proceeding. Two Trixboxes. I am having that classic Trixbox problem with Centos and Zaptel, so I have to reread the docs, as yum update fails with unresolved dependencies. So after some fear and doubt, I have made the leap!
