The showstopper at the moment is that FDS 1.0 does not currently support x86_64, which is what our production servers will be running. Bowie

/var partition and recovery

greetings bryan, did you say that in your experience the /var partition should _not_ be on the extended partition table for "recovery" purposes? - rh

If you have a separate boot partition, I'd not only suggest making it a primary partition for the same reason, but also mounting it read-only for oops-protection. Nope, not at all. I put /var in Extended, LVM and, if you can believe it, even LDM (yes, Windows "dynamic disk" disk label format ;-). I only avoid putting root (/) in anything but a primary partition for recoverability. Even if I use a separate /boot (I rarely do -- I keep my root do only a few GBs max), I still like it outside of any compound disk label. -- Bryan J. system clock uses UTC selection on centos install

hello ya know, i have researched this several times over a coupla sdecades and my brains have fallen out again... ;-> so... all of you that are setting up mail and web servers in the USA or other countries, are you clicking and turning on the system clock uses UTC selection on a centos install?? the reason i ask is i research this about every 3 to 5 years and i never remember what i figured out or thought about it... apologies what is the wisdom and usage on the list please? soooooooo help an old man of 40 out please? ;-) thanks and kind regards! - rh

Their website says: The FDS 1.0 package includes the core DS, the Admin Server, the Management Console, web applications, and other support code for those apps, including online help. These work on 32 bit only - we are working on x86_64 support. I interpreted that to mean that their i386 build would not run on x86_64. Bowie

lilo is still there. Its just not available as a choice in the install. We build all of our servers using kickstart (automated version of the install) and there lilo can be specified as a boot loader. The question was "WHY", the answer seems to be "because 'they' didn't like lilo" 1: Inadequate arch support in LILO 2: RAID1 boot problems with GRUB not deemed sufficiently important to leave in LILO until said problem is resolved. For ServerCD 4.3: 1: Please support i586 in the install. Method: if arch is i686, install i686; if it's i386->i586, install i386. standard compiler temp space directory

greetings apologies for possibly lame question yet ummmmmmmmmm... where do i look in the docs or google to find out what directory(ies) the various compilers and programs are using for temp space? most of my knowledge of old and simple looking has found that most stuff will go in the below directories... it is still /tmp or /var/tmp or similar otherwise? i havent done any compilation in awhile and am setting up a new box and want to make sure i have enough space in the right areas and partitions thanks in advance - rh

doing that grub-install /dev/sda will give me the "corresponding BIOS device" error. MD Raid 1 software device not booting not even reaching grub

Hi, I have a raid 1 setup where /boot and the rest lies inside the md0 container. /dev/sda1 md0 has /boot /dev/sda2 md0 has swap /dev/sda3 md0 has / SCSI card is an ADAPTEC AIC79xx Grub as the bootloader Centos 4.1 as the OS version Two 70gb SCSI disks The server was working fine. Then a power outage. checked the board,disk,ram,etc. All fine. Now when I try to boot the server does not even reach GRUB (no splash, no menu). I read a post about maybe the MBR got damaged (no fix posted) and another post about missing SCSI drivers not being loaded before kernel boot.
