firefox and mplayer failures

Does anyone else have problems with playing video/audio files under firefox with mplayer? Almost everything I try (the latest were some .asf and .wmv clips) craps out under firefox, but if I save to disk and play with mplayer, they work just fine. CentOS 4.1 with latest updates and the following related to the problem. mplayer-fonts-1.1-3.0.rf mplayerplug-in-3.11-1.2.el4.rf mplayer-1.0-0.17.pre7.2.el4.rf firefox-1.0.6-1.4.2.centos4 -- Collins Richey Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code ... A few weeks back I had tried to install CentOS on my old AMD 5x6x (equiv to P75 performance) with plans to use it as my firewall and router. Because there were some problems relating to RPM compile architecture (apparently), I posted and Bryan suggested IPCop, even at peril to his life on these lists ;-) according to him. ;-) ;-) Just wanted to tell him thanks, it's worked out well. Had three old ISA NICs (3Com combos BNC and TP), configured them for 3 different IRQs and IOBEG addresses and have it working beautifully. Have 3 zones and a recent download of several files sized *teen megabytes and larger gave me throughput of 590-600 KB/sec off my cable modem. I am out in the low-density boonies, but I still feel this is fairly impressive. They even have a boot diskette available to support those old BIOS that won't boot CDs, as this unit was. So, thanks Bryan. I'm trying to configure a backup unit on an old Aptiva DX2/66. Have 1 ISA Etherjet. Need a couple more ISA NICS that are configurable for IRQ/IOBASE. Anyone that wants to put two old good ISA NICS into a home where they will be cared for and appreciated, send me an email with details, if config diskette available (even if off the net), price, etc. I'll pay shipping too. greetings, in regards to the question(s) i have posted to the list in in June and today in terms of the Intel Pro/DSL 2200 modem it is an internal pci card that is a dsl modem... or pry more correctly a dsl "winmodem"... it is not the intel product that is mentioned at this site... http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ a friend of mine mentioned this site... so... as you can tell there is an issue when doing searches between the intel pro/dsl 2200 modem and the intel pro/wireless 2200 units i think what i am struggling to do is find out if it is possible to load a CentOS box in such a WINEmulation or other emulation way and get this card to function on a CentOS box so i can turn cheap PCs into inexpensive gateways with this card... or, can someone recommend another internal DSL modem that i can do this with that supports DMT and works with CentOS - linux to be more specific ?? thanks in advance for any direction or pointers. - rh -- Robert - Abba Communications Computers & Internet Sales/Service www.abbacomm.net

Good morning, everyone... Perhaps this will either help or encourage others interested in using CentOS as a networked workstation. It is based upon my experiences, and all other disclaimers apply. 1. I did a basic workstation install from 4.1 CD's deploying KDE and Gnome desktops and, other than a few minor issues, mostly of my making, everything went smoothly. The install process is excellent, fairly cogent and straightforward. 2. I have used the Rekall database development application with MySQL for nearly a year under various permutations of Linux, most notably Debian and Mandriva. Since it is not delivered with CentOS, I was forced to locate and download the source. I also downloaded and compiled the xbase and xbsql (auxiliary utilities for Xbase) packages with no problems encountered, whatsoever. 3. Another favored application, the Pan Newsreader, has a dependency, the gnet libraries, which I found as a RedHat RPM, on rpmfind.net. Then I simply downloaded the latest Pan build, which has a number of bug fixes in BETA, and installed it from RPM. If you are going to use the latest Pan builds, you will need gnet >=2.04. [Glitches encountered] 1. I have not had the time to RTFM about XSane and its wicked permissions, yet. For the moment, however, I am resorting to firing off XSane as the super-user, since it will not work otherwise. I know it's in the manuals, I just haven't had the time to read the manuals that much, yet. ;-) 2. Of course, as nearly always is the case, regardless of which platform I've been using, I had to manually install the Java runtime and create a link for it in my Firefox configuration. It's not really a glitch; more like it is a fact of life. 3. KDE's kdetoys doesn't apparently come with CentOS. However, that is a project for yet another day, when I have time to truly explore it further. I probably will have to install it from source if I want the weather in my task bar. <sigh> I tried to install it from source, and there are errors from the source. Oh, well. Life goes on. Evolution

When I set up the Evolution mail agent, I could find no way to change the outbound port from 25 to 587. I have to do this due to port 25 being blocked by the cable company. Thunderbird is no problem. Altho I don't particularly use Evolution as a mail agent, there are times when I might use it, but its worthless without being able to send mail out to my server. Did I miss something in the options or setup or is there no provisions for changing the smtp port to another port? -- Snowman

ThinClients: Java Appletes and JavaScript

Has there been any Blogs or other discussions about Java Applets vs JavaScript? If appears (and I stress "appears") that JavaScript is getting the attention due to Googles use of AJAX and Java Applets do not have the same popularity. The reason I ask is that I have contemplated trying my hand at some Applets for my client as well as using some inline Java in Web pages. Can't get JRE to install so that FireFox sees it

Hot on the heels of the success of getting sound to work with FireFox, I am on to getting Java applets to run. When I go to a page with a Java applet, I get the little Rubik's cube- like icon that says I can click to download. So I do, but FireFox says it can't find it, so I have to install manually. I click on Manual install and I'm taken to a page that allows me to download the RPM within a ".bin" file. That's new to me, but I'm game. I download it and follow the install instructions. It makes me create a /usr/java directory, and open the .bin file there. I have to go through a whole license text file, but in the end it says it's installed. I check in the directory, and there's a jre directory and an RPM file. I wonder why the RPM file is there if it's already installed. I try to install using RPM, and it says it's already installed, so I decide I believe it. I re-open FireFox... and going to the same web page I was at before with the Java applet, I'm presented with the same screen saying I need to install the plug in. What am I doing wrong with the installation? Dave

Just can't get sound working in Firefox

I have been all up and down my Firefox options, and all up and down whatever sound card configurations I could find in Gnome. And I just can't get sound to work. Whether it's a Flash animation, a Quicktime movie, or anything, they all run, but no sound. All other applications that run sound, like Xine or XMMS, work fine (although mysteriously XMMS every now and again loses it's connection to my sound device.) When I look on Google for help, every FireFox related page ultimately says "check your sound configuration" without much more to offer. I'm totally stumped. I'm not even sure where to look anymore. Any suggestions? Dave
