upgrade from fedora to centos?

Hiya, just wondering how easy this would be, I'm guessing through yum, but is there a preferable process from updating from fed core 3 to centos ideally keeping settings as is? (desktop rather than server, just want to migrate to centos, nothing too essential apart from raw data). Ian

memory leaking?? kernel problem?

List, I have the two servers CentOS 4.0 (running postfix, mailscanner) on this hardware: HP netserver 2000, PIII - 1GHz, 512 ram, two Hdd SCSI - 36 GB (RAID 1), I have monitored this server for a couple of months and I've seen that the memory used is increasing every week until it reaches all available memory and the server crashes.... at this point mailscanner crashes or sometimes the server gets freezed....my question is? Is this a memory leak? I 've always used this combination (mailscanner, postfix on Whitebox) and never got a problem, but when I upgrade my system to CentOS (kernel 2.6) this problem began.. can you help me? regards Israel

Hello Is in CentOS 4 an easy way how to receive FAXes from an external modem (COM2)? I need not send ... Sorry for souch stupid question, but I am rookie in linux/faxing and Google shows tons of options... I would like use na way which is clearest for CentOS 4 ... Petr Klíma

yum repository for Mplayer and Codecs?

Good morning, I've looked around a bit for a yum repository for Mplayer with all of the codecs. Does anyone know of a repository? (I admit I'm being a little lazy this morning :) ). Thanks! Jeff

Screen blanking

I have a couple of LCD monitors attached to Centos servers, I would like to be able to watch the logs on the monitors but after a while they go blank. How can I disable this? I would think someone would have noticed this in RHEL or CentOS if it was a pure kernel problem. What all are you running in the way of daemons? Something there could be to blame, no? Also, if the servers are identical in terms of software and hardware, have you considered a memory check? When I made the switch from Windows to Linux I discovered something interesting. Since Linux caches memory (as you probably already know) sometimes you are more likely to find out memory is defective on Windows than Linux, especially if the defect is at the end of the RAM, if that makes sense. The first time I experienced this was with a computer that originally ran Windows. Since it never touched the full 768mb I never had a problem. I switched to Linux and it started crashing immediately. I blamed it on Linux, but then ran the memory test and found out that what was happening is that Windows never used enough memory to touch that spot of bad RAM. But Linux did, caching it all then crashing. Maybe a longshot, but just in case your hardware and software configurations are identical (because you did mention two machines) it might be worth considering. Just updated my kernel via yum and # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.0 (Final) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant) needed the second line to install HP drivers and left it there for any other packages which might need it. just generated the following in grub: title CentOS Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-11.EL) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-11.ELsmp) root (hd0,2) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-11.EL ro root=/dev/md0 initrd /initrd-2.6.9-11.EL.img title CentOS Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-11.ELsmp) root (hd0,2) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-11.ELsmp ro root=/dev/md0 initrd /initrd-2.6.9-11.ELsmp.img so they're obviously a ' sed "s/ release .*//" ' which should be replaced with sed "s/ release .*//" | head -n 1 i believe this is in /sbin/new-kernel-pkg in mkinitrd-4.1.18-2 on line 132: title="$(sed 's/ release.*$//' < /etc/redhat-release) ($version)" which IMHO should be: title="$(sed 's/ release.*$//' < /etc/redhat-release | head -n 1) ($version)" Cheers, MaZe.

Re 2GB R3000z RAM problem booting.

I upgraded to 2GB RAm on my laptop. Windows boots fine and memtest86 shows no error. However when I try to boot my the boot proces stops beyond the udev [ok] prompt. Suse 9.3 is working fine. Any ideas about what I need to do to fix this. Anand
