why does virtual console start affect graphical start up?

Hello all-- I have 3 CentOs 8 kernels insalled on my new machine -- 1. 4.18.0-193.14.2.el8_2.x86_6 2. 4.18.0-193.19.1.el8_2.x86_64 << using this one for this graphical boot 3. 4.18.0-193.28.1.el8_2.x86_64 Only #3 will boot without a *Virtual console can not start *error message but it hangs up trying to get into graphical mode, although it will boot to multi-user. The first 2 seem to work reaosnably well in either graphical or multi-user but I get a *Virtual console can not start *in boot messages with both of these. Does anyone know anything about this? Having a heck of a time trying to prevent lock ups. Thanks. **

Apologies - possible hardware problem?

Good afternoon, I have a home workstation with an AMD CPU, Titan V GPU, 32 GB of memory, and a root SSD and /home on spinning disks. Right now it has xubuntu 18.04 on it and it would boot fine. I shut it down and restarted it to get an inventory before I put CentOS 8.2 on it. It won't boot now. It gets to the grub menu and freezes. I can't use the keyboard to select an item in the menu and I can't press enter to make it boot or press "e" to edit the boot line. It just sits there (seemingly forever). Here's what I've tred: 1. New keyboard/mouse - no change 2. Different monitor - no change 3. Booting from the CentOS 8.2 iso on a USB stick - no change 4. Replacing the TItan V card with a GT 1030 NV card - no change When booting from a USB stick, I get the BIOS splash screen and press "DEL" to get to the menu, but the menu never shows up. It just freezes. This one has me stumped. Not being able to boot from a USB stick is really puzzling. I've never seen that before. Possible bad MB? My apologies for using the list to help debug problems but since I'm moving to CentOS 8.2 I thought people might have some ideas. TIA! Jeff

mdadm raid-check

Hi, is it required to run /usr/sbin/raid-check once per week? Centos 7 does this. Maybe it's sufficient to run it monthly? IIRC Debian did it monthly. I just checked on Fedora 32. It does not run raid-check at all, at least not via a cron entry. /usr/sbin/raid-check is available, though. Is that an oversight? (I started it manually now and will check if it's run once I update to 33.)

ssacli start rebuild?

Hi, is there a way to rebuild an array using ssacli with a P410? A failed disk has been replaced and now the array is not rebuilding like it should: Array A (SATA, Unused Space: 1 MB) logicaldrive 1 (14.55 TB, RAID 1+0, Ready for Rebuild) physicaldrive 1I:0:1 (port 1I:box 0:bay 1, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 1I:0:2 (port 1I:box 0:bay 2, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 1I:0:3 (port 1I:box 0:bay 3, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 1I:0:4 (port 1I:box 0:bay 4, SATA HDD, 8 TB, OK) physicaldrive 2I:0:5 (port 2I:box 0:bay 5, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 2I:0:6 (port 2I:box 0:bay 6, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 2I:0:7 (port 2I:box 0:bay 7, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) physicaldrive 2I:0:8 (port 2I:box 0:bay 8, SATA HDD, 4 TB, OK) I'd expect the rebuild to start automatically after 1I:0:4 was replaced. Is the new drive being larger than the old one (4-->8) causing issues?

Centos 8 and logwatch

Hello I am trying to get logwatch working on CentOS 8. System is fully updated. Usually install minimal version and then add only necessary with yum. On CentOS 7: install logwatch and get daily logwatch report on mail. On CentOS 8: install logwatch but no way to get mail. Am I doing something wrong? Or miss something? Thanks in advance Blaz

yum update security updates only

Hello, I'm trying to do a yum update and only apply the security patches. I'm aware of yum update --security , however when I do that it fails to install any updates. I've tried this on a fresh 7.8.2003 (core) system, as well as the Centos 7 AMI on AWS, specifically ami-04a25c39dc7a8aebb and I get the same results. There are definitely security updates to apply. For each package which needs to be updated, it lists "<package name>" from updates removed (updateinfo). Does anyone know what's going on here? Thanks, Eric

Using anaconda gui without mouse

Hi, I should use Anaconda gui in CentOS 8.2 graphical way but the idrac doesn't map the mouse. What are the shortcuts for using only a keyboard? In particular it seems I'm blocked in the partitions page Any time I select one and press enter to configure the right side details/parameters, I don't find a way then to come back to the left side and move up/down to select another partition and configure its parameters. I would like to use it and not text install. Thanks, Gianluca

I had two models in my head: 1) The Frescobaldi playback module did the MIDI-> sound conversion. 2) The virtual card passed the signals on to the physical card. Unable to get dummy interfaces to persist across reboots in CentOS 8

Hello all, hoping someone can help me out here. I cannot get dummy interfaces on a new Cent8 build to persist across reboots. On Cent7 - this is the process I use: Create Dummies: # cat /etc/modules-load.d/dummy.conf dummy # cat /etc/modprobe.d/dummyopts.conf options dummy numdummies=4 # ip link add dummy0 type dummy ## - repeating a/ ascending dummyN adapters for as many needed # service network start # dracut -f Now this was different than even how 6 handled it, forget how I finally dug that up (possible I even asked here). I've applied this same configuration to a Cent8 box I'm trying to stand up and it all appears to work fine, but unlike the Cent7 boxes, when the Cent8 box comes back up, all the dummy adapters are missing. I've been searching all over trying to find some documentation on this to no avail. I'm hoping someone has some suggestions here to help out. Thanks, Frank
