CentOS 5.2 came with 2.6.18-92-x, not -53.x. I would use the -92.x kernel and see if that makes a difference for you.
Ah! I down-graded the kernel as it played merry hell with my nVidia stock driver. I'll try upgrading it again. The driver re-compiled just fine, but I was suffering some lockups. Down-grading fixed that. Ric
