it doesn't show up anywhere...Fedora 4 picks it up ok though..which isn't really the machine I want it on.

For most external USB storage devices, they should be detected
automatically and show up in /media on centos 4. cd to media and see
if the usb hdd is in there. Even if it still is in there, you may need
to mount it. You can do this by mount /media/name_here   Don't forget
to unmount when you're done.
