I have no idea why (now i'm curious...). After changing the prefered minor superblock back (mdadm --verbose --assemble --update=super-minor --run /dev/md3 /dev/sda...) all is well again.
When the hostname's different (eg when booting from a live CD), the md devices are renamed at assembly.
