I found the solution on my own: I needed to add an option model=thinkpad to snd_hda_intel. echo options snd_hda_intel model=thinkpad > /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf

Now it is working.

In the audio settings of Gnome perferences I see an internal microphone which doesn't produce any input. The microphone is also not disabled by the key on the keyboard.

One thing to try is adjusting the gain on the microphone *after* you've started your conferencing application. I have to do this with my webcam mic.
