IIRC, they need a partition at the beginning of the drive to reserve space for GRUB2. That should be a "BIOS boot partition" not an "EFI System partition" for GRUB2. It's not used for a filesystem, but it is used to store GRUB2's second stage image.
Yes, you are absolutely right. I'm away from home right now and I don't have access to my home systems. My memory failed me which is not unusual.
