Thanks, I've put in that change, I'll get the dev's to abuse things for a while and we'll see if that's it. quick tests by me look promising :)

You probably are running into the default limit for open files. Look at /etc/security/limits.conf and add a line reading
- nofile 64000Then restart the ldap server via the init script.
