In an effort to discover some of the details in /etc/shadow, I have downloaded and rebuilt the SRPM. It seems to be missing a dependency of gcc-c++. After installing that, the build went fine.

Also, does anyone have a pointer to detailed information about /etc/shadow? The man page is many years out of date and is now a bit incorrect.
