Whether I like it or not I need to get a version of PHP that is greater than 5.2.1 as the latest SugarCRM version require this and as I am a module developer I need to have one of the later versions of PHP on my machines.

I did not say that, did I? I did say SugarCRM 5.5 requires PHP 5.2.1 and up and as the last version of PHP I can get for CentOS 5.4 is 5.1.6.23 I cannot install SugarCRM 5.5.
