I tried it with KDE on that box. Same problem. So, it *is* something with automount and not a problem in GNOME. I looked at the /etc/sysconfig/autofs in that box and everything is commented out, like on my box. I will be studying the above web page!
Because automount has nothing to do with this problem. I don't know what the problem actually is, but I want to make sure you don't go down the wrong path.
