I think a better description of the history would be to say that qmail was so bad that Wietse started from scratch to write something useful. And meanwhile, the problems with sendmail that they both set out to fix were solved anyway.

No, but I don't have a problem with stock sendmail now that it runs mostly as a non-root user, always splits the reception and delivery steps, and has the milter interface to chat with other even less-privileged programs during the SMTP conversation.
