Starting firefox from the command line may give you some more info. Unfortuneately, it sometimes spits out quite a lot even when functioning well.

Firefox crashes (disappears) and I get a cryptic (to me) message about some security violation. I did not save that information.
Do you use the TST colored tabs add-on? I can describe the same behavior because of it. Once disabled ffx is back.
I don't know what TST colored tabs are. I have several add-ons such as Noscript and various video downloaders. They appear near the top of Firefox.
