Yes, tried that. it doesn't list vdpau. however "strings mplayer | grep -y vdpau" turns up a number of instances of vdpau.
Um, yes. But:
[ralph@reboot ~]$ mplayer -vo help|grep vdpau vdpau VDPAU with X11 [ralph@reboot ~]$
