The second options is to use the serial port on the machine itself (you will need a null-modem cable for this). Then using things like minicom or hyperterminal you can access the console.
On the off-chance you are using a Vista laptop to connect via the serial port, you can use putty (usually used as an SSH client) to connect. Hyperterminal was pulled from Vista.
I use putty for serial port access regularly.
