I am a bit bewildered that neither the official KDE from centos nor the semi-official mate from epel pull in as part of their install the Xserver.
There is never any reason to assume that the display (needing the Xserver) is on the same machine as the desktop or application being displayed. X has always worked just fine over networks.
Yes, I understand that. However, when one installs a 'Gnome Desktop' one in fact gets a GUI that runs on that system. When one installs "KDE Plasma whatever' one does not. If one does 'yum grouplist' on CentOS-7 there is no 'KDE Desktop' displayed as there is for CentOS-6.
I haven't tried that on a machine that does not also have the gnome desktop installed, though. But both KDE and MATE should be alternatives you can choose at login if you have all of them installed.
Yes, I have already discovered that if one installs Gnome first then the other desktops begin to work as well. I just cannot seem to get either alternative to run if Gnome is not installed before the others. And the semantics here are that if I install KDE or Mate first and then install Gnome neither KDE nor Mate can be started from the command line as I wish to.
I am scratching the CentOS-7 system and starting again with a minimal install.
