Yep, that's option #4. Especially when used with the CUPS driver for Windows.
You can still fetch those PPD files for use with #3, but it requires manual intervention.

Yep. It's a PITA each time you add a printer.
On a smaller network with 1-2 printers, do it once, forget it.
But on larger network, with more printers or -- better yet -- changing printers, it's a Godsend. Especially when you have certain printers choking due to users killing settings, things that you can override (like removing options).
Raw print queues really don't have the shortcomings in functionality that you seem to be saying they do.
Unless you're installing several different printer drivers on a Windows client, and the vendor drivers start conflicting.
