I've done a bit of Googling the past few days as well. One link I follow it mentions about CentOS/RHEL not supporting wpa_supplicant in the current kernel, and that you'd have to recompile your kernel. Other threads I've read of successes, but usually not much detail is provided and it's done so through compiling the drivers and what not.

Maybe it is just me, but I was never able to get non-802.11g wireless NICs to work with WPA.
I have been using WPA on some CentOS machines here (Intel IPW2200) without any issues and without rebuilding the kernel.
